Steinbach rips Vrabel
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
Cleveland Browns guard Eric Steinbach told the Associated Press today that he believes Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel should be fined by the NFL for a play in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game.
The play in question came with 11 seconds left when Browns quarterback Derek Anderson spiked the ball to stop the clock. According to the AP report, Steinbach felt Vrabel dove at left tackle Joe Thomas's knees.
"To dive for a guy's knees like that?" Steinbach said in the AP report. "And almost take out the quarterback? When the game is already over with? ... You've got to get fined for that."

Your comments
(38)What do you do when you can't win? You whine.
Never cease to amaze me.
the cut block should be banned from football from all levels
I think he was pushed into joe thomas
SHUT UP!!!
ahh Eric...play the game...it's not Vrabel's fault your team is terrible.
I saw the play, and Vrabel did not dive at his knees. He was pushed in that direction by a pile of players. This "attack the Patriots for anything" is really getting out of hand and it has all been set up by Roger Goodell's personal; vendetta against the Pats. What else can you expect from Goodell , a former Jets employee, born, bred and raised in New York.
The league owners need to seriously consider dumping him before he creates any more havoc around the NFL.
STIENBACH AREYOU PLAYING FOOTBALL OR TIDDLYWINKS.GET A LIFE..
Somebody get that guy some cheese for his whine.
wow! What a season for all the crybabies. Play the game and put your kleenex away.
It's getting out of hand because of the cheating that has gone. There's 2 people to blame and Goodell isn't one them. Rodney and Bill, that's it
If the game is over, why is Anderson spiking the ball?
I'm a big Pats fan, but that doesn't mean I'm blind. Both the Wilfork and Vrabel hits were questionable at best. And if either of them had been done against the Pats - all of the exculpators would be screaming for blood. Just imagine if one of the Bills had put Brady out for a couple of games with an elbow to the knee!
there is a conspiracy against the patriots and it runs nfl management, refs, and coaches deep. thats why we loaded on talent because come playoffs, goodell, the opposing coaches, opposing teams, and refs will not be able to stop us. we were robbed 2 years ago against the broncos and robbed again last year against the colts. its war.
IF THE GAME IS OVER, WHY IS ANDERSON SPIKING THE BALL?
I love Vrabel (and Wilfork & Harrison), and I'm the first to think that the Pats are overly-criticized in the media, but I watched the play over again on my TIVO and Vrabel kept playing way after the whistle blew. You just don't need to do that when you're way ahead in the game...
Steinbach, who witnessed the play, feels that Vrabel took at cheap shot at Joe Thomas' knees. So far, most comments here would dismiss him as a whiner without having seen so much as a replay. Mike Allen says he saw the play, but chalks it up to a Goodell vendetta against the Pats.
You might be right about what happened, but so far you've come up with nothing but name-calling and taunting. You sound like those feeble Yankee fans who lorded over us all these years. How about a rational response from someone who witnessed the play?
The Pats are under a microscope this year anything they do, I mean ANYTHING will be a headline or distorted enough until it becomes a headline. Trent Green gets a Grade 3 concussion for trying to block DL Travis Johnson and Johnson reacts with him trying to undercut him and hurt his legs!! ADL bad mouthing A QB who doesn't know HOW to block anyway....but no one critisizes Johnson for badmouthing Green who is laid up in the hospital severly injured....NONSENSE! If Johnson played for the Pats he would be Crucified by the press for what he said!
My impression is that Vrabel did not see him spike the ball or thought that the motion was more of a drop than a spike (a trick play) and reacted like it was a fumble. Recall the Pats got burned a few times last year stopping too soon on an assumed dead ball. There was also no whistle or motion from the ref implying the play had ended.
Will someone et these 300+ lbs babies a damn pacifier... wah..wah...wah!!!
Steinbach should look at the film. Vrabel did nothing wrong. He didn't hear the first whistle and kept playing. Anderson backed up causing Vrabel to fall as he surged foreward. The lack of resistance caused Vrabel to go down. In essence, Joe Thomas lack of resistance caused the whole thing. Mike Allen's comments pretty much sum up the whole thing. Cris should learn what a "cut" block is and that the defense throwing one would be quite counter-productive.

I thought Vrabel was pushed in the pile, no?
Pats throwing on 4th and goal trying to cover the spread with 45 seconds left up by 10 and Cleveland with no timeouts???? What's up with that.....
Isn't that what good players do; Play full tilt, full time, regardless of the score or time left?
Typical cheap Patriots play.
they just can,t stop crying
The Patriots don't need to play dirty, they play with talent & brains. Unfortunately many people are Pats haters due to the fact they are jealous their teams have not done what New England has in the last decade & they continue to lead the league in bucking the system. Don't hate them because they are beautiful!
Vrabels a stud! Steinbach is a moron!
Ron, it's the Pats response to the rest of the league. They have their hackles up and are going to show everyone they didn't need to video signals to beat the rest of the league.
Vrabel must not have thought the spike was a forward pass.
Looking at the Tivo replay for 10 minutes .....
1. It looks like Thomas backs up and Vrabel starts to fall forward and Thomas helps him towards the ground and then Steinbach pushes him from the side.
2. It sure looks like Steinbach causes the contact between Vrabel and Thomas' knees and then Andersons feet.
3. Even more importantly, It even looks like Vrabel is falling forward/towards the ground as the whistle is being blown so how can he stop Steinbach mugging him while he is tied up with Thomas? cheap shot artist
4.Hey Steinbach got anything else to cry about? It's nancy's like you that make me want to get Randy Moss his second touchdown of the game, or punch it in in the closing minute of a game we have already won.
5. Hey Reiss, send Steinbach my email address so I can have it out with him. I am sick and tired of the rest of the NFL bitching and moaning after we beat them down.
Actually on second thought....Keep it coming it will just fire us up to beat down the cowboys. Can't wait.
B.M.F.
who cares, the indians will sweep.
your slacking reise i can tell dont get lazy you were doing good i know the patriots are like a stone wall to media but crack it for us the people. because if you reporters dont get the answers for things how else would we find out. theres gotta be interesting chemestry going on with the new guys like little situations daily between moss and brady or belechick and thomas. dont get lazy you have to keep up he good work.
This is the same Eric Steinbach who got arrested this summer. Not exactly a model citizen. Also Vrable has been a quality guy for a long time in this league, I don't think he would take a cheap shot at someone - not his MO.
Ron: the Pats were on offense, what were they supposed to do? Usually when a team with a big lead brings in a field goal kicker late in the game, going for a FG is considered to be running up the score.
And look at last night's game to see how quickly a 10-point lead can disappear.
There is no way Mike Vrabel thinks of something like that let alone does it, but I guess u can't expect 2 much more from a team that can't get out of it's own way.
I think "himjim's" comments are essentially correct. I think Vrabel was still playing because of two things, the lack of a whistle, and it really looked like Anderson spiked the ball slightly backwards. I think that makes it a live ball. It's doubtful the ref's ever call that, but if that's what Mike thought, it's understandable he'd still be going.
I've been watching that play over on my TiVo too and here's what I see. 1) It seems clear that Vrabel cannot see the ball being spiked from his vantage point behind the Tackle, 2) Vrabel immediately loses his footing and begins to fall face down, at which point the tackle forces him down, even as he takes a step backward, 3) It's at this point that Vrabel tries to regain his feet, only to shoved back and to his right by the Guard, at which point the pile begins to shift and ... down goes the QB.
This incident was caused by the Guard losing his cool ... likely because he's losing the game and can't handle the buzz ... and NOT by Mike Vrabel.
The whiners in the NFL have simply come out of the woodwork this year, which - given their failure to be competetive - is hardly a surprise.
here we go...one at a time...WHATEVA!
