Bill's follow-up

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his Monday press conference today at Gillette Stadium (11:45 a.m.) and two points he made stood out:

  • WR Troy Brown, who in on the physically unable to perform list, will have the clock started this week. That means Brown will have a 21-day window before the Patriots must decide whether to place him on injured reserve or on the 53-man active roster.

  • Belichick said the Patriots operated without their coach-to-quarterback communication system for most of Sunday's game. He said it was unusual for that to happen and that the team went to a system in which they were signaling plays into Tom Brady.

We'll have more from Belichick in a bit.

Has Belichick (or will he) comment on the atrocious officiating yesterday? The pass interference against Hobbs and the no holding call against Faulk were two of the worst calls I have seen this year.

    Paul said:

    Mike,

When, in the 'Skins game, the communications were lost from the 'Skins offensive coordinator to the QB, it was reported that the Pats would have had to shut down their system also, IF notified by the officials.

Do you know if the Pats complained to the Colts and refs and if the Colts had to shut down their communications also, or, are these two different situations in some way?

    Thanks.

Why am I not surprised to hear about the lack of working radio communications? Couple that with the questions about "excessive" and "piped in" noise in the RCA Dome and the absoutely ABSURD number of penalty calls and non-penalty calls on or against the Patriots (OFFENSIVE interference??) and then consider who howls and screams and stomps their feet the most about being "mis-treated" and I smell a Bill Pollian. Get me the Glade.

    Bill said:

As an unbiased fan I thought the officiating was fine, including the pass interference calls (turning your head just so you can run the receiver off his route is interference, guys). Both teams had ticky-tack calls made against them and refs missed calls against each team. Piped in crowd noise seemed to occur and will become a hot button issue no doubt. Came away from the game not liking the Pats at all, they showed little class. Seemed to want to win more than play fair. What did LaDanian say...?

    Joe said:

Bill- When you say they showed little class, you're talking about the whole team. You really need to provide examples of the whole or even a great majority of the players not showing "class". Too easy to take pot shots without substance.

As for the officiating, there seemed to be an unusual amount of bad calls (mostly against the pats). the worst had to be the one Bill challenged where Moorehead came down with the ball out of bounds. There were 2 refs right on the out of bounds line within 5-6 yards of the catch. i would expect that they get the call right. i just want consistent officiating good, bad or otherwise.

The biggest surprise to me was that the colts defensive line looked really tired at the end of the game, which allowed Brady some time to make some plays.

    ed said:

What the %&$%&$#% are you talking about Bill?
The officating was fine? Even the announcers called it terrible..........The play that the reciever caught the ball with his foot CLEARLY out of bounds with teh ref standing 5' away staring at his foot? Even the other ref was amazed it was called a completed catch. Lucky we threw the flag becasue that was a major screwed up call...........

    Mike said:

Bill, you call yourself 'unbiased'? You delude yourself. Watch the reply of the Hobbs penalty again. He had position (legally) and was looking for the ball. Even Mike Sando from ESPN thought the calls were questionable.

    http://myespn.go.com/profile/hashmarks?tag=patriots-colts

Piping in crowd noise isn't legal, and the Pats aren't the only ones to complain to the league about it. [See Cowher and the Steelers in 2005].

    Scott said:

What is it that people see that make them feel the Pats show little class? The only penalty called for such an incident was Matt Light which I never saw what specifically he did. I saw two very good teams playing very hard with a lot of emotion. The 4th quarter showed what the additions of Welker and Moss has provided the Pats . . . the same kind of weapons the Colts have had for had for several years.

    Len said:

The fact that you claim to be an "unbiased" fan is laughable, especially considering you come in here throwing out that "class" word again. The pass interference call on Hobbs was ridiculous, and I don't see how that can be disputed. He didn't turn his head just so he could run the receiver off his route... he already had perfect position on Reggie Wayne, and it's a cornerback's job to play the ball more than the receiver when you have the position for it.

Go look up Pass Interference on NFL.com's rulebook and once you're clear with the definition, tell me which action constituted defensive pass interference. I won't be surprised if you can't find anything.

    Mike E said:

Of the unusual number of bad calls in this game, all in favor of the colts, one that has gone unmentioned is the "phantom" first down on an Adai run as the half wound down. The call helped set up the long touchdown that put the colts up 13-7. The play was short by a full yard but an official on the sideline can be seen sneaking a rather shady first down signal to (presumably) another official. Was the ball spotted and a chain measurement done? The broadcast went to commercial and didn't show it.

    The NFL
    The Officials
    The Communication Guy
    The Sound Guy

    Joe Mama said:

Very good news that the Pats started the clock on Troy Brown. That would give him 3 weeks to be available for the Baltimore game (if not before). I won't be surprised if he ends up being the Pats 4th or 5th receiver/2nd slot receiver, sure handed KR/PR for near goal line situations, and insurance as a backup DB who covers slot receivers. It will be nice for TB to have him as a security blanket when Pats need a sure handed receiver to pick up a first down on an important 3rd/4th down possession. JG + KW the sound you hear is footsteps behind you, and they are TB's!

ok i do believe yesterday's game was a nail biter and a stressful one for fans of both teams. As far as the officiating goes it was horrendous at best. If the Pats went most all the game with no communication and still pulled off this win it shows they have what it takes to win in games. I do believe people who still believe they cheated must forget that coaches and players use tactics in all sports for the edge. I do not believe the Patriots in essence cheated, the pictures taken and sent to the coaches during the game is no difference. I think the Pats have proven they are the team to be reckon with this year and they are making a statement with each game. I am a huge fan of football and of the Pats. I also enjoy watching Colts-Pats games and know that regardless of each others records this game will always be close and worthwhile to watch. People need to get over all this other crap and just watch some football, this season is half over. My concern is why the two coaches are so chilled with each other. That surprised me. Any info would help.

    Steve said:

I can honestly say that the game was just sloppy. Allegations about piped-in noise aside, both teams played hard, but wound up with Brady throwing two picks and Manning having one pick and a fumble. Ok, chalk that up to good defenses. The worst thing was the officiating. I have never seen a team rack up more penalty yards in a game, most of them bad.
Let me say that I don't like the Colts, but when they won the AFC championship last year, they did it in a grinding win at the end of the game; no rediculous penalties, no stupid piped in noise. They won, and I got over it. Yesterday's game was good, but wasn't the classic that AFC championship was. I feel like the NFL is getting hit a lot this year, and while the Pats have a lot of enemies since they've won so much over the last four years, whether it's against them or against other teams, the NFL needs to put an end to all this alleged nonsense that goes on. Let's just play the game and enjoy it, as long as it can be a fair game between two good teams.

I seriously cannot believe what whiners the Pats are. Seriously folks, can you HEAR yourselves. OK, there was a bad call. There are obviously bad calls in every game. That's why there is a challenge provision. Patriots want to know why everyone hates them. You are the most bitter people I have ever heard. Even when you WIN!

    yourmom said:

im not saying they were made to.... but the officiating in the first half was definitely hard on the patriots. im not a patriots fan, but i will admit i like them more than the colts.... or more than paton manning i guess.

but seriously, the officials took the whole first half to get their heads out of their asses. as for other ways of cheating go..... they still won.... and everyone probably cheats in one way or another. but officials should be unbiased and aware, especially after slow motion replays

I am one of the biggest pats fans out there guys i WAS TICKED. The refs were freakin blind. That crowd noise most likely wasnt CBS. Bill's mic mix-up wasn't CBS either. And they say we CHEAT! lol. Glad we came back even without the mic and won.

Dawn makes me giggle. She makes grand assumptions about an entire football organization as well as an entire region based on 17 anonymous posts on a website.

Oh and the reason people hate the Patriots is because they win, plain and simple. People don't like to see other people succeed because it hurts their feelings.

You want to see "whining"? Wait until next year's draft when the Pats select in the top 10 (SF pick) after the penalty that took away their own first rounder. The amount of "whining" will be mind boggling.

It might be as much whining as Jet fans do after they visit NE again but I doubt it.

They make excuses win or lose . they need to grow up . They are just like the coach of the team they pull for . no class , pouting sore losers . thats the exact reason that the entire league hates them . I said before yesterdays game started they would be blaming the refs , and I was right . what crybabies!!!!

I am a huge Colt's fan, and I like the Pats - I think they play hard. Anyway, we all can admit that the game had some bad calls, But it was ON BOTH SIDES. You people act like Faulk's last touchdown wasn't out of bounds (I think that's who I'm talking about) - Anyway, he didn't have both feet in before he fell - but I don't hear any of you saying anything about that. I thought some of the calls were crappy, but they weren't that 1 sided. Oh, and I didn't hear the crowd noise skipping on my tv station, either. This crap is not that serious! Get a life!

    Jeremy said:

How about the catch they called that was CLEARLY out. What's even better is the replay showed not one but two officials looking at the play from two different positions and they were shown looking right at the feet of the reciever. That with the two horrible pass interfernce calls and the one they failed to call in the end zone against the Colts sends a clear message to me. They do not want the PATS to stay on top.

Lets get something straight. The fans of the patriots do not whine, we state the obvious and move on. Going through the Patriot history is an ugly scene and we were there every ugly step. Now that we have a team that plays like a team and doesn't have that all hyped one person who wants all the attention people hate them. Just like the boston red sox- it is either you love em or hate em mentality. When the team racks up that many penalties in one game then there is an obvious lack of fairness in a game regardless who is playing and what team has them. True fans of football will take issue with calls that shouldn't have been called. It is the integrity of the game and of sports that is at issue these days. When all those players who test positive for drugs, in a way is cheating because it alters their behavior. Shall we remember lawrence taylor and joe theisman, do you think that would have happened if he wasn't doped up on cocaine. As a fan of sports it sucks to see so many players take advantage of their opportunity. I am looking forward to our next game and going to enjoy this bye week. I believe Pittsburg will be another tough game....we have to take one game at a time and deal with what comes out of them. Officiating really needs to be addressed in the off season, that is what makes a win and a loss occur.

I won't...lol What did tony dungy say about the whole spygate thing?

Boo Hooo. Sniff. Sniff. Whine. Whine. The Pats cheated, they run up the score, they don't have any class, and BB doesn't shake the other coaches hand for 3 full seconds and smile while he's doing it. Please. There is no crying in football.

Lets face facts people. The Pats are 9-0, they are the best team in the NFL, they have defeated previously undefeated Indy and Dallas, and they now get 2 weeks to prepare for their next game. They also have 3 games remaining in the AFC Least. Their only competition down the stretch is Pittsburgh (at home). Baltimore (on the road) and Philadelphia (at home) are yawns. I guess if the Pats rest their starters in week 17 and the Giants need to clinch the playoffs they have a chance. Deal with it people. The road to the Super Bowl now goes through NE in January. And If you think Peyton is looking forward to playing in the cold and snow your kidding yourself. Whether you like it or not get used to the idea of the Pats being handed the Lombardi trophy for the 4th time. And on the way they will probably go 19-0 and TB will break PM TD record. And remember your hate just makes us happier!

BTW, for the record, BB did shake TD hand after the game and say "good game. good game." Now wipe away your tears and grow up!

The refs. of the game should know what they are doing. The ref. called the game like he was getting paid by the colts. Yes we are blaming the refs. Open there eyes and call the game right. It's not being about being crybabies, its about showing everyone know the bullsh** the pats go through to be the best. And when they do lose the pats and there fans say the other team played a better game. Not make excueses. It don't matter who likes the pats. First No one like anyone or anything that is a threat to them. And the pats are a threat to ALL of the NFL teams And no one like that. (aawww) And second if no one likes the pats it is because their the best team in the NFL and their WINNING. So who's the sore losers. There is only 1 fact and that is that the Patriots are the best and #1 team in the NFL right now. Patriots vs Who

Whats going on here? some people just don't know what they talkin about..the refs did a terrible job period..com on now, the pass int. against hobs was stupid, the pass int against Moss was also goofy..the catch out of bounds, damn that was the worse..not to mention the hook on faulk which prevent him from catching the damn ball that drove Tom Brady crazy..I dont blame him, there was no call.. Matt Lyte's call on the other hand was stupid, but i do understand why he did it..I play football myself, you gotta protect ur QB at all costs, if he hadn't done what he did, Brady could of been sacked or hurt...

i'm a cowboys fan to the fullest. I NEVER liked the pats. they can't complain about anybody after the stunt their coach pulled (filming defense plays). they just mad because they couldn't run up the score on the colts and the D was sacking brady all night. but i will say this, the pats will not have a perfect season for the simple fact that they are too cocky and one of these teams they have left to play will show them they are not all that.

    Len said:

Patriots fans have a very strong case when it comes to the poor officiating in this game. The people here saying that Patriots fans are "whiners" even when they win are just being silly. I'm assuming this also means we are not allowed to complain about poor officiating when the Patriots lose... so when are we allowed to voice our opinions? During the bye week?

I also think it's a bit telling that people who don't even like the Patriots will come all the way to The Boston Globe, go into the Patriots section, and post on a blog that's all about the Pats just to claim that we're cocky, whiny, or that our coach lacks sportsmanship and class. Wow!

    Jake said:

For all the posts about Patriot fans being cry babies and complaining even though we won. Think about this. What if the bad calls went against the the team you were rooting for? What if it wasn't even a Colts/Patriots game. The team that the calls went against would be furious. Its not just us Pats fans. Its everyone.
Everyone likes to talk their team up, and when things dont go perfectly.. Debate it with other people.

My best friend hates Tom Brady and the Patriots. And we go at it all the time. Its just the nature of the sport. Every year there is a big story, a big game, bad calls, cheating (Roids). Just get over it..

    And for the Pats fans:
Don't worry, in 2 short weeks we get to enjoy rolling over the Bills. I always look forward to the games when the patriots dominate. Where there is no flaws for people to point out. =)

Are you really trying to tell us that CBS has access to the RCA dome PA system? BB shook TD's hand for as little time as possible and I for one do not blame him! TD ran his mouth first and jumped on BB and I would think the way the game was called, TD should be embarrassed to have lost that gift of a game. Perfect season or not the Pat's are going to meet the Colts again in the playoffs in foxboro and it's anyones game. Let's just wait and see.

    Stephan said:

The officiating was ok?? You kidding? The penalty yards were 146-25 for Patriots vs. colts. Have never seen such a differential before. The penalty yards were by far the most in Patriots history, breaking a 25 year old record. And the Patriots have never had close to this many yards in a game under Belichick. So, forget whether fair or not. At very least, if I were Colts, would not expect the same if there is a playoff rematch at Foxboro
