Colts response
The Colts have released the following statement today:
"In reference to questions regarding the audio transmission of yesterday’s game, please refer to the following statement from the NFL:
CBS has informed us that the unusual audio moment heard by fans during the Patriots-Colts game was the result of tape feedback in the CBS production truck and was isolated to the CBS broadcast. It was in no way related to any sound within the stadium and could not be heard in the stadium.
We trust this will put an end to the ridiculous and unfounded accusations that the Colts artificially enhanced crowd noise at the RCA Dome in any way."

You are a bunch of liars...It was quite evident during the ALCS that Fox enhanced the noise so loudly that I had to turn it down...I guess you folks are following the same pattern...Look and listen carefully...As the Red Sox Proved...The superior team usually wins so please stick your little gimmicks where the Sun doesn't shine...The Patriots are simply a superior team which you will find out again when you visit Foxboro later on...
and in a related story, the Bruins reported today that artificial crowd noise from the RCA Dome will be piped into all future homes games at the TD BankNorth (formerly Boston) Garden
De facto commissioner, Bill Polian, at it again. How and Why is Nantz heard if it's a CBS glitch??

Sounds like someone at CBS is a Colts fan. "ridiculous and unfounded accusations" doesn't sound like an unbiased statement.
I was at a Celtics game a few years back and they were deffinately pumping in crowd noise through the speaker system. I was looking around as the crowd was getting louder and noticed that no one in the stands were cheering. People weren't even standing up or clapping and you could tell that it was coming from the PA system
What a strange thing to do

What consternation!
We know Bill Polian would never pull any kind of shenanigans in order to win - he's to honest!! :)
I still want to know if the communication problem will get the same play and inferences by Bob Costas and the other Patriot-hating weasels.
What a crock.... the NFL found a way to cover up for there "model team".... Go Pats!!!
Oh Tony......tsich, tsich, tsich.......what a dark day for the NFL.....having to revert to cheating. What a bunch of hypocrites......
didn't the Steelers have a similar conplaint a few year back?
quack,quack,quack
Clearly something was up and maybe they werent pumping noise but the Colts and CBS can rest assured they if they were they should be found out and spend a few weeks in the trash heap for cheating just like the pats.
The Colts and CBS answered the wrong question. This "sound anomaly" could be a separate issue from them piping crowd noise in. Remember, the Steelers complained about the same thing two years ago.
If Jonathon Kraft was the one to report the incident to NFL security and he was at the game, would he have noticed the artificial crowd noise if it was only going on in the CBS broadcast? I was at the RCA dome for last year's AFC championship game and I can tell you it was VERY loud (and un-naturally hot might I remind you). I don't think Kraft would have been able to hear the broadcast from within a luxury suite, let alone notice an audio glitch in the background of the broadcast. This whole thing smells just as funny as the sudden increase in temperature of the RCA dome last January.
They should be talking about the so called refereeing that went on during the game not this. I thought the refs were going to put on Colts hats and start asking the Colts how many yards they wanted on the penalties they were calling, they were a sham........
The Colts have been accused of this before. Mmm...Coincidence? I think not. They just got caught and now the "damage control" begins. Just 'fess up and move on, instead of all the lame excuses.
We trust this will put an end to the ridiculous and unfounded accusations that the Colts artificially enhanced crowd noise at the RCA Dome in any way."
Is this a statement by the NFL Commissioner's Office?
WOW! What an unbelievable statement!
My brother took a listen to the same play at the same time of the game during the patriots radio cast and its faint, but you can hear the same "crowd noise" cd skipping in the background, and once it stops the crowd is practically silent.
A true non-denial denial. Pres Clinton would be proud. The Colts did not even acknowledge the allegation and deny it. A simple "we did not enhanced crowd noise at the RCA Dome in any way" would have been sufficient.
In the current era of global communication, the Colts will not be able to hide if the CBS statement is untrue. Right now lots of citizens are analyzing the radio and other feeds of the game attempting to verify whether the glitch was isolated to the CBS broadcast. It would not surprise me if NFL/CBS is bluffing, but I'm confident if they were that the truth will come out in the next few days/weeks.
I'm not sure why this is such an issue. It is more likely that the Indy folks messed with Brady's sideline receiver and that had more of an effect than crowd noise.
This is the link from the Steelers complaint two years ago. Just because CBS screwed up the audio doesn't mean they don't pump up the noise in other ways...
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3095903
Can you people read? The statement is from the Colts and it quotes CBS. It was not made by the NFL. Of course its going to be partisan.
The Colts, like some many others that try to play the "hollier than thou" card - are no better than anyone else. In fact, they often turn out to be worse. I wouldnt shake Dungy's hand either. He said it was a "dark day for the NFL" when the Pats were accused of recording signals. Must be even darker today. HYPOCRITE!!!
Oh of course the Colts couldnnt have done something like that of course I mean Dungy is the familes values chairman for President Bush of course he would not cheat...BS The NFL has the Colts back and thats that. Whatever fine you guys want to cover up what they Colts clearly did then fine do it but where is the investegation into the ref's? even if Goodell does not think the ref's were in the colts pocket during last nights game plenty of American ticket buyers do so do something about it! I dont know about you guys but the NFL front office is untrustworthy and I have felt this way for a long time. The ref's favor the colts so that the colts can win and the NFL can make more money off their golden boy Manning. and when people like me call for the NFL to look into the game calling nothing ever happens. I bet if the ref's pulled that crap in our favor that the NFL would come after the pats in a heart beat. If the pats were not so god damned good I would stop watching because they might call us cheaters for being caught the NFL front office is full of cheaters starting with that hard ass Goodell.
So much bitterness from those who won the game. It is not the Colts' fault the Pats were caught cheating. Of course the NFL will champion the Colts cause, who wouldn't rather have the face of the league be one of class & integrity rather than cheating? Sounds like some envy from Pats fans... Can't wait for the rematch when the Colts have a full complement of players. How would New England have fared if Moss, Light, Bruschi, & Colvin had not played?
Anyone asking why is Nantz heard if it's a CBS glitch does not understand how audio works. It's not like there's one giant AUDIO knob that controls everything in a TV production truck. They got feedback in the truck from another source than the one that controls Nantz's microphone.
The bottom line is that the supposed noise was not evident on either the Patriots or Colts radio calls of the game - only on the CBS telecast. End of story.
To Marc, Briannagh Drew:
Read it again. The statement came from the Colts. Only the part in italics is a quote from the NFL
what a sad day for the NFL this is. shame on you indy cheating bastards.
Why is Bill Polian on the front page of the Colt's website? Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy I can understand... but Polian? What an arrogant guy.
why would cbs need to be plugged into the rca domes speakers the colts have a P.A. guy that makes the announcements - simms and nance dont speak over the rca domes speakers they speak only in terms of the tv broadcast so i dont get how it can be a cbs glitch.... i may be wrong but.....
A simple check at the Radio Broadcast recording will suffice. Strange how the whole "investigation" of serious allegations of cheating consisted of "asking a CBS PR person" *wink* *wink*... A very thorough investigation that lasted about one hour. Wow... Corrupt NFL??? Nah.... no way...
SOUNDS LIKE BS...
WHO IS TO SAY THAT IT WAS NOT PIPED INTO THE SPEAKER SYSTEM..
THEY WILL STOP AT NOTHING TO BEAT THE PATRIOTS AND THAT INCLUDES SOMETHING LIKE THIS.
I want to hear WBCN's recording of the game. Shouldn't be too hard to put the rumors to bed if there's nothing on 'BCN's broadcast.
On a related topic...what's more immoral, taping another team's signals or jacking up the temperature of your home field when you know your opponent has a number of players with the flu? Just curious...
Can the Kraft family possibly have some kind of machine built by mid-January that will enable the Gillette Stadium engineering guys to crank up the wind speed to about 75 MPH when the Colts have the ball, and simultaneously drop the temperature on the Colts side of the line of scrimmage to -35 degrees F? Kind of like a "we know what's up in Indy" editorial comment.
did anyone else see the sign hanging in the endzone last night? it said something like "stadium (however many million) quarter back (however many million).. playng with integrity...priceless". integrity my butt.
ironic.
I was at both WS games in Denver. There is no question they were pumping in crowd noise. Multiple fans noticed it. I have no idea about Indy and dont care. I'm sure a lot of stadiums do it. If you lose a game and blame it on noise it's just as bad as blaming it stolen signals.
That would make since to all you idiot pat fans why your precious pats didn't score 6 touchdowns wouldn't it. How on earth do you explain the fact that the last part of the game where the pats came back the crowd was quiet? You all are a bunch of idiots who just want to take some other team down with you because your precious patriots are a bunch of classless (as in the way belichick acts) cheating, jerks. For all I care you all can win countless superbowls but will never be worthy of any of them considering the type of people that make up the team.
If any of you have ever been to the RCA dome I am sure you will notice that it is extremely loud because of all the loud screaming fans that know to shut up when our offense is out there. Being loud is not a crime... that is what homefield advantage is all about. And CBS did say that the skipping noise was from their audio.
I am just wondering why the cry baby patriots are talking about how the colts supposedly cheated. IF they did they would've done it throughout the whole game for a win... but they lost so get the hell over it and just go worship yourselves some more and stop trying to make all NFL teams look bad when we all know that you are the only tainted team.
I think a thorough and unbiased investigation is in order. If the colts are innocent they would be exonerated and if they are guilty they can pay the price for breaking the rules just like anyone else. Let's remove Bill Polian from the decision equation and try to salvage some of the integrety of the league. I quicky little CBS statement is not enough, there's too much at stake here for the league, lets do the right thing and not sweep this under the rug.
Dennis Green admitted to doing it as HC of the Vikes, his assistants were Tony Dungy, Tom Moore (now Colts off. coordinator) and John Teerlinck (Def line coach). Jonathan Kraft filed the complaint and I don't think he was watching on TV. Raising the temp. when guys have the flu? possibly causing dehydration? Oh, the sainted Dungy and the Colts, cheaters? Say it ain't so.
How can you explain Robert Kraft complaining to the NFL security offical after the game? Kraft heard it and he was not watching the game on CBS. As a season ticket holder I do not want this swept under the rug. Sweeping it under the rug lowers football to the level of wrestling. We as paying customers deserve a full investigation and full disclosure of the results. don't make us sue like the 2 Jets fans.......
Hey Pats fans,
Look out! The government's black helicopters should be coming over the hill any second now...
Put your aluminum foil hats back on and resume your 9/11 conspiracy theories.
Hey, I hear that at Gillette Stadium they pump in............ an artificial soul for Belichick.
From a Brit, who lives over the pond. Patriots won and will continue to do so,
Let them play silly games and then deny it, but when push comes to shove there is a date in the New Year when Bill and the boys can shove the PA system and all the Colts crap some place where the sun don't shine a lot.
Judging by the officiating, it makes sense doesn't it? I saw 2 line judges on each side of a Colt's receiver and he clearly was out of bounds. The call? Catch in bounds (later over-ruled). There were several more ridiculous calls. Sure, bad calls are made at times but, the offensive interference calls were equally as suspicious. See how ticked off Brady was at watching one of his receivers get held but, no call? Combined with this allegation, one can't help but wonder.
In the end the Patriots beat the Colts and the bad officiating. Gotta' love that don't you?
Hey colts fans, you lost, get over it. manning coughed it up at the worst time, I guess he is a pretty good actor, he did a great Rex Grossman impersonation out there at the end. We don't need black helicopters, we have the Patriots I spy satellite and our evil moon base to take care of us here in the land of Champions.
Kraft asked NFL security to investigate what he thought was an odd circumstance. I assume that he was watching the CBS feed in the boxes as well as the live game. If he heard the same thing I did, then I don't think it was a huge "conspiracy theorist" move to ask security to investigate. He did NOT go in front of the media and say, "See! They cheat!" He simply did what any NFL franchise coach or owner would and should do. The media is the one who put the spin on it.
Furthermore, I am a little disappointed in the Colts press release regarding the matter. Considering the Patriots played the whole thing low key, Polian (and let's be honest we all know he wrote the statement) responded in harsh manner. If he heard that in Gillette he would be asking NFL security to do the same thing.
I'm a Pats fan, but the officiating was awful and favored the Colts. I believe sometimes the calls work in your favor, and it just wasn't our day for good calls, but to say they were legitimate and correct would be a stretch.
The bright side: You know this is more fuel to the "us against the world" fire the Pats have burning.
What a bunch of bull...I have a few friends who were at the Pats/Colts game and they said you could hear the echo throughout the dome. Obviously their shannagans didn't work. Even the bogus officiating couldn't disrupt New England. The general public, for the most part, is not stupid. Cut the crap and fess up!
ANy word from WBCN? CAn someone from the Globe call over there and listen to the tape? They could put this theory to bed with one statement.
Pats fans, and all the rest of you "Patsys" in Boston?? where is that? somewhere in Alaska? Patsy is a good name for all you inferior football fans. Bella-Chicken is a good name for your lying-cheating so called coach, who crys that the Colts are piping in noise. What a crock! ! ! Frozen tundra or not, we'll kick your butts, when we meet again. we're a far superior team, you have no running game, we do. take cry baby Moss's legs out from under him and he'll fall apart. he's done it before.
Have a mediocre day
You want to hear some noise.....wait until the Phony Ponies get to Foxboro!!!!!!!
That same sound appeared in the first half as well...dolts stink!!!
Hey guys, remember when the PATRIOTS BEAT THE COLTS in their own stadium, when we were playing pretty bad, and they were playing pretty good, and the referees seemed to have it out for us, and the crowd noise was very loud (with or without the supposed artificial crowd noise)... either way the pats won the game. deal with it colts
Hello.
I do Audio for tv shows for a living and i have worked in 100's of TV trucks. I heard the audio clip on Boston.com and it sounded to me like video feedback. I am not saying that they we're not putting crowd noise into the PA, they probably were. But it sounded to me like a mistake on the broadcast. and yes it certainly could have been the audience mics only and have nothing to do with the announcer.
I think the bigger thing here is the AWFUL calls in this game, last years AFC game had the same thing going in the way of the Colts and against us. At some point do we notice a pattern?
-Jeff
Pats 16-0!!!!
When asked to comment, Belichick said:
"I don't know anything about that. Right now, we are preparing for Buffalo. They are a tough divisional opponent, very physical, can cause problems in all three aspects of the game. They are always tough at home. We have a lot of work to do to get ready for them..."
when is the apology for the phantom pass interference calls coming - i assume on wed
It's a good thing Belichek has decided to get ready for the "tough divisional opponent": Buffalo. After all, other than the Pats, there is a total of 4 wins in the division.... That's interesting. Sinc I have never submitted a comment to the Globe in my life.
Wow, lets get over it guys, we won! Let's all calm down. As long as we win nothing else matters. You remember that Lombardi guy right? I'm the best, even if I am a freaky dude, so listen to me.
Trust me, no one knows cheating like I do. When we act so sensitive it just makes us look more suspicious, so help me out.
Colts fans can take their moral high ground Bull**** to church and then to the buffett line. They still lost despite having the Archie Manning rules enacted on every Manning pass over 20 yards...What new pass interference rules will Polian force Goodell to enact for next season so that Peyton can win another ring.
I work at the stadium, and I confess. I did it. Dungy had me and my staff pump noise into the stadium during Patriot offensive plays. I can't take the guilt. OK NFL, go ahead and dock us a first round draft pick.
Sincerely,
RCA Dome guy
Listening to the comments from both sides here makes me feel a little sick to be a football fan. What do you expect from a society that follows Britney Spears around waiting for her to fall. It's no longer about the sport. ESPN's Monday Night Football is a prime example of how dumb sports is becoming.
http://ihatemondaynightfootball.blogspot.com/
I think some people can't read.
The statement is from the Cotls, not the NFL offices. And the statement from CBS stats and ends in italics. CBS didn't say "ridiculous and unfounded."
As for Pats fans making an issue out of it - couldn't we have a little more class? They won and fans are complaining? We should be following Jim Brown's advice, "Act like you've been there before."
You know, except for the jail time and stuff...
calm down everyone...the NFL has decided that there was nothing to this audio gate...it's the same thing as the NFL deciding that Bills tapes didn't have anything on them either....
so it's time to let all of this pass
Here is the news clip from Pittsburgh in 2005 when the same thing was happening. Enough of the NFL protecting them! Nice on masking Mannings flaws with this.
http://kdka.com/sports/Steelers.Colts.RCA.2.380397.html
Now, let me get this straight, the very same team that was fined $250k and the very same coach that was fined $500k for stealing signals by their own admission, are whining about someone maybe cheating....takes a lot of guts. Wonder what would have happened if the Pats had lost? You usually don't see "sore Winners".
The Patriots won and proved they were the better team Sunday. But the Krafts, and all these whiny "fans" complaining about supposed noise enhancement, are once again proving to be sore, miserable winners. *This* is why people should root against the Patriots -- not Spygate, not Hoodie, not Dynasty... but the constant complaining about officiating, the media, crowd noise, the temperature, blah blah blah. You have 3 freakin' Super Bowl trophies in the last 5 years (and probably will get another one in a few months)!!! Shut up and enjoy rooting for your team!!! Why are you worried about what the media say? Why do you need to create explanations for why you would have lost a game YOU DIDN'T LOSE???
Dear Mr.Ellis Hobbs,
Again the officials working your game made a bad interference call against you in a game of importance to you and your team. What are the odds of this happening to you twice in a 10 game span against the NFL's most loved team the Indianapolis Cheaters with Commishioners pardon in hand...I've made it abundantly clear that I can't stand the Patriots and you will not go undefeated as long as I sign the Officials paychecks!!! As far as the allegation is concerning the piped in sound at the RCA dome during the game they had league approval to use any method they could think of to beat the patriots per my approval,Sincerely the former employee of the N.Y.Jets
Roger Stinkwad Goodell....
You people are a bunch of cry babies. Take your lucky win and shut up.
It is amazing that everyones a liar but you Patriot fans and the only team and Coach that has been caught Belicheat and the Patriots too the tune of 500k and a first round draft choice REMEMBER THAT if not everyone else does. I hope you really don't consider that you won anything on Sunday that game was given to you by the Colts. I will use your excuse you always make we had four starters out and especially Marvin Harrison so live your pipe dream while you can we will see you in Jan if your still in the playoffs we will be,
All of you Patriot fans are the cheaters. We in no way tried any of those "gimmicks" you say we did. You guys barely beat us and we had two of our star players sitting on the bench with injuries... just imagine if we had them in. That's okay, though. We will meet again with all of our players and you can bet that this will fuel us to destroy you and make it to the Super Bowl... again... and win!!!!
The Patriots won and their fans are still whining... crybabies!!!
Has anyone heard the WBCN (radio) broadcast? If the same sound is heard on that then it is obvious that the sound originated in Dome not the CBS truck.
Let me get this straight...there are people in Indianapolis with so much free time that visiting a Boston website and insulting Pats' fans sounds like a fun thing to do.
Um, OK.
Calling fans "cheaters"? That's really poor. I mean, aside from the fact that it doesn't make any sense.
I need to comment here on a few ridiculous things.
(1) I was at the AFC championship game last year in Indy and I found most of the Colts fans to be nice people and good football fans. I don't think the Indy fans posting here are an accurate sample of the Indy masses.
(2) Having said that, to continue to call the Patriots cheaters or tainted is bitter and ridiculous. Yes they were caught video taping, but many other current and past coaches came out and said it isn't a big deal. It wasn't that they were video taping that was against the rules, it was that they were video taping from the sidelines. The act was not against the rules, how it was performed was against the rules.
(3) The Colts look for "advantages" just like any other team in the NFL and any team or its fans that think their team is on moral high ground compared to another team is mistaken. Did you see Brady yelling at the officials during the kneel-downs at the end of the game? On WEEI he stated that he was yelling at the officials to call a penalty against the Colts D-line for simulating the snap count....an act that is....wait for it....AGAINST THE RULES! SO , regardless of the crowd noise issue, the Colts did break the rules in the game....just like almost every team in the league does at some point each weekend in one way or another.
(4) The officiating was terrible. Just as bad as the Steelers/Seahawks super bowl a few years ago. I don't think it was a conspiracy, but I don't understand how so many calls can be made for penalties that just didn't happen.
(5) These are two excellent football teams and they will play again in January if everything continues the way it has, so both teams need to calm down.
(6) For all the Colts fans whining about not have Harrison and your ROOKIE left tackle...might I remind you that the Patriots defeated the Colts in an AFC championship game WITHOUT Richard Seymore and WITHOUT Ty Law just to name a few.....CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS DO NOT BLAME LOSSES ON INJURIES.
It's in the NFL's best interest to cover it up. They don't need another cheating scandal. If anything, they'll quietly tell the colts to knock it off. But nothing public.
Right...its in the NFL's best interest to cover it up because the Colts are the FALSE PROPHETS of the league. America's team with their lily white, faultless QB and family values friendly coach. Pure and Utter BS and Goodell should be ASHAMED of himself. It has NOTHING to do with who won the game. The Colts do this all the time...the Steelers complained about it 2 years ago, Jacksonville did the same last year. I dont care if they pump in noise or turn up the heat or whatever....but GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE Dungy....you are no better than anyone else, and probably worse than most.
ok enough! I've been a lifetime Pats fan and although we are obviously the best team in the NFL.... we look like a bunch of classless idiots! We cheated who would doubt that from our coach? The Colts have always accepted their beatdowns with class why can't we show a little class even in a win. Brady looked like a dork with the retarded head butts!!!
The local TV station in Indy replayed tape from their ground level camera and that distortion was not heard. They also re-played the radio broadcast and that noise heard on CBS was not heard either.
Boooo HOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Let's find something to bitch about even though we won. TYPICAL BOSTON FANS!!!!!!!! Makes me sick!!!!! CBS SAID IT WAS THEIR OWN TECHNICAL GLITCH! GIVE IT UP!!! I've been in the stadium at Indy...MANNING CONTROLS THE PLACE! Loud noise and hearing a pin drop...whatever he wants!!!! Give up the conspiracy theories...NE is the team with the cameras pointed in the wrong direction! (Looks like an asterix for this year to me!)
Give it up!
We'll see you in January!
Hey, I'm a Pats fan, but I can't stand whiners. Did you listen to the youtube clip? It was clearly an audio loop that didn't sound at all like voices. Come on! Don't you think they'd be smart enough to pipe in a roaring crowd noise? Sheesh! And it's probably so loud there because there is a roof! Ever think of that?
And learn how to read. The "ridiculous and unfounded" comment was by the Colts, not the NFL commissioners.
Jim, thank you for that dose of sanity. Would you please send your resume to the Globe?
OK...Patriot fans here it is..In the days after you beat us and all you can do is complain about the calls of the game and the "pumped in noise". Be honest how stupid would we be to have pumped in noise after the Pat's have already been accused of the "spygate" and at that, the biggest regular season game of the year. I have been to concerts at the RCA dome and they sound awful because there is such an echo. I have also been to a high school football game where there were probably 2,000 fans at the most and it is loud. Just take your win and stop being so obnoxious like usual.
It is funny to read the Indy fans who posted comments here concerning how the game would have been different if Harrison et al had played... I ask the question of how badly the Pats would have kicked their behinds had the officiating not been so horrible? Not only were they calling every imaginary call they could on the Pats (some of the worst calls I have ever seen), but they also refused to call anything on Indy... horrible. Conspiracy theory? Remember, you are only paranoid if they really aren't out to get you.
During the game Phil Simms twice commented on how the Indy crowd is so considerate of Manning by quieting down when he comes to the line of scrimmage. We all heard those comments during the game. Didn't the NFL listen too? If the CBS comment was true, then Simms wouldn't have heard a difference and commented like he did. If CBS was correct, there would have been no notice except on TV. Remember, the complaint was lodged by the Kraft family because they heard it in the stadium, they were there.
