Large point spread

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 20, 07 04:44 PM

Las Vegas has set the betting line for Sunday's game between the Patriots and Eagles, and New England is a 23.5-point favorite.

ESPN's Sal Paolantonio writes on ESPN.com that this is the largest point spread in NFL history for a game that does not involve an expansion team.

"Nowadays, you don't see too many spreads over 16 or 17 points," Sean Van Patten, an oddsmaker at Sports Consultants in Las Vegas, told Paolantonio. "That's because most teams take their starters out in the fourth quarter of a lopsided game. The Patriots don't. I call this phenomenon The [Bill] Belichick Factor."

  1. Our friend Sean Van Patten is wrong. The Patriots DID take our their starters in the fourth quarter against the Bills. Matt Cassel handing off to Kyle Eckel is not leaving your starters in nor running up the score. SVP's point spread was toast in the first half.

  1. It's too bad this game wasn't in Philadelphia. I'm sure the fans there would really appreciated the total destruction that is going to befall their team.

  1. Running Westbrook and the point spread is all the talk on Philly 610 AM this afternoon. Crazy sports talk. I'd love to see the Pats hang one on the Eagles this Sunday.

  1. David K is right; the Pats put in their subs in the 4th Q. The Bills picked up 80 of their 229 yards in the 4th against the mix of subs.

The comment box is most annoying. When you switch to another tab or window and come back, all the text that was typed disappears. Sucks.

  1. A 23.5 point spread between two teams who played each other for the Superbowel less than three years ago? Amazing.

  1. It comes down to just doing your job. The offense doesn't practice "let's try not to get any yards or score." If you don't go all out , you can get injured. And I must agree with Bill....what would you have them do: kick a field goal? That's pouring it on. If you rush on 4th and 2 with your 4th string back, all the defense has to do is make a tackle.

  1. The 23.5 point spread is right on target. The Eagles' secondary is crippled, they are weak at defensive end and have a negligible pass rush. Whether McNabb or Feeley starts they will try to emphasize Westbrook and the Pats' 3-4 will neutralize that by rotating in Tedy and Junior. The Eagles will be unable to sustain drives and by giving the Pats a huge time of possession differential they are almost guaranteeing at least 48 points for New England. Brady will have a lot of time in the pocket and could throw six TD's.

  1. If the Pats gave up 23.5 point each game this year their record against the spread would be 5-5. It looks like Vegas finally got the spread right. I would still give up the 23.5 though. I also don't know how they can say its because of what they do in the 4th quarter. Tom Brady has only thrown 5 of his 38 TD passes in the 4th quarter of games that the Patriots beat the spread. He has 9 total 4th quarter TD's (2 in each game vs Indy and Cleveland where the Pats lost and pushed against the spread).

  1. Mark, highlight & copy the text. Paste it when you come back.

Kyle Eckel & Heath Evans almost rushed for 100 between them. Those are the Patriots number 4 & 5 running backs. If they can't stop them, they have no right to complain.

  1. The 23.5 point spread is locker room material for the opposition. The Pats should win this one, BIG, especially playing at home, but as the NFL says, "On Any Given Sunday" and with that being said, I have cautious optimism regarding this game.

That being said, 23.5 points is asking any team to do an awful lot.

Betting wise, which I don't do, I probably would take the points.

And, I too do not care for this new format.

  1. I atill wouldn't put money on the eagles at 23.5... I wouldn't even consider it until you start talking 46.5

  1. Boo Hoo. The casinos and bookies are losing big $ on the Pats fans because their spreads are too small. Boo Hoo. And so they have to give the highest spreads in the history of football, but not even the most delusional Pats haters out there wants to risk losing their $. Boo Hoo. Maybe they should take the NYJ + Miami games off the board before they have to give the biggest point spreads in the history of all sports. Ha Ha!

I have to agree with previous posters on the new layout of the blog. I just love disappearing text and name and email address info. Plus it takes forever for posts to appear. Also the November archive doesn't work. The look is great but the performance stinks.
