Pees breaks it down

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 30, 07 01:03 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- Defensive coordinator Dean Pees answered questions from reporters today at Gillette Stadium and touched on some of the struggles the team had against the Eagles last Sunday.

On the television broadcast, it was mentioned that the Eagles had success with "in cuts". Pees didn't see that as the primary problem.

"It wasn't so much the in cuts as it was the seams of the field, there is a little difference," Pees said. "One thing is that I give a lot of credit to the Eagles and [quarterback A.J.] Feeley. He had a good game and threw a lot of passes when he was under duress and getting hit, and put them on the money. At the same time, we need to play them better.

"The thing that got us a little bit in the last game -- and we've tried to work on it this week -- is just fundamentally we got a little lax at times and let things happen that just shouldn't happen. There are other plays they just made -- he made a good throw, they made a good catch, and that's football. But there were other times that we got caught kind of watching the rush, expecting the guy to get sacked and he didn't get sacked, and maybe we were out of position a little bit."

In other matters, Pees did not specify how the Patriots will plan to replace starting OLB Rosevelt Colvin, who was lost with a season-ending foot injury Tuesday. Pees noted that the team goes "game to game" and "you're always going to see multiple defenses from us, week in and week out."

  1. I think BB needs to serve Dean a slice of Humble Pie. Maybe playing it cool is Dean's style but until I know that the team is taking the necessary steps to make sure our Secondary doesn't get sliced apart in any more games, I'm gonna stop feeling so secure in my hopes of an undefeated season.

I think it's time to bring in the rookie and to make some changes. Honestly, AJ Feeley is not the best quarterback we'll be facing this year. The team should be doing A LOT of work on these types of things.

  1. Please tell me you are you 15 or something? No rational man would think that about an 11-0 team withthe 5th rated overall defence in the league right? Sure the sky is falling because the Pats had to play a game??? Wow.

  1. YEAH CHARLIE! Who is the guy kidding. Does he honestly think people like Pees have the job they have because they are stubid and can't coach.

Hey I want to see Merriweather play too but I know I'm in no position to say that hes ready to go.

What changes do you recommend Aaron? tell the DB's to try harder... thats brilliant. tell them not to allow receivers to get open... insightful.

Leave it to Pees. fifth ranked in the NFL is pretty darn good. spoiled as a team

  1. I am 14...well I will be in a few years; really I just snuck out of school today to post on a syndicated patriots column. Don't tell, please!!! And Charlie, please tell ME you are from Canada (oh thanks you did in your name!( because you spell Defense with a 'c'.

Anyway, the defense SHOULD be a concern to any true Pats fan; it's been good this season but has an inflated ranking because most teams have mentally given up after being bombarded by the offense. Last Sunday our Defense was the only thing that gave Philly a chance to win that game. And it's only going to get worse without Rosie.

AJ Feeley is not one of the best QBs in the league; why did we help him look like he was last week??? Yeah the PAts are awesome this year, but this year is about NOT taking that for granted and continuing to work hard each week because EVERYONE is gunning for us.

  1. Big leads also have the effect of making our defenze look worse than it is. A lot of the rushing yards in some games for instance came when we were out of our base defenze and in more of a nickel or even a two lineman package.

    Guess where I'm from, Aaron?

  1. Aaron your what I consider a spoiled Pats fan. Shut up! Besides the rotation of seau and bruschi getting messed up, how will rosies injury make our defense worse. I understand the depth issue but thats it. Our defense is great and every team has bad days. On the flip side of that coin every player has good days and that is what Feeley had that night.

Everyone is always gunning for everyone thats why they are paid professionals. So that point is moot.

Any true Pats fan knows that they are not invincible but that doesn't mean they have to be paranoid.

  1. Larry, you're what I consider a jerk -- someone who tells strangers to "shut up!" just for expressing different views than your own. You're also what I consider an uninformed Pats fan if you think that an opposing team will not put more effort into trying to beat the number 1 team than any other team; sorry friend but that point is not moot...unless of course you like to ignore reality.

I am not being paranoid and I am not acting as if the sky is falling; I am still very secure in my hopes of seeing a 4th ring on Coach Belichick's hand BUT if the PAts don't make the necessary changes from last week's game I will be worried about the 19-0 season. It may be a spoiled mentality, but I am one of the fans that REALLY wants to see this team go undefeated. Yes, even MORE so than winning another Super Bowl. Reason being, a) I hate the 72 Dolphins and b) it will mean more historically to be the only team to have gone 16-0 -- they already have three championships and have enough years in Brady to expect even more.

  1. Hey Aaron sorry I hurt your feelings I wasn't trying to be a cyber bully. I'm half serious half joking. Your not the first to call me a jerk but whatever no problem.

I'm not uninformed and I don't agree with you about many of your ideas but aw well at least we are fans of the same team.

Hey for what its worth I hope we do make some improvements as well.
