Practice report

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

FOXBOROUGH -- The Patriots are holding their afternoon practice inside the Dana-Farber Field House. The team is in shorts/sweatpants, shells and helmets.

CB Asante Samuel, who missed Wednesday's practice due to a personal situation, is back with the team. Once again, S Eugene Wilson, S Mel Mitchell, ILB Eric Alexander and RB Sammy Morris were not present for the media-access portion of the practice.

The media was present for stretching and a few warmup drills.

It is my opinion that Asante Samuel is one of the top 5 cover corners in the N.F.L. and if he improves his tackling he would be at the top 3 period. How do you respond to my opinion? Also I am curious regarding Asante 40 time if you happen to know that?

Emory - His forty time was a 4.3 when he entered the NFL.

Call me overly critical, but I have not been thrilled with Samuel in coverage, except for the last couple days. I think Hobbs has been a weak spot this year. It looks like Wilson is not participating in practice, which will hurt for Sunday. I will cringe if I see Harrison and Wayne getting some of the catches I have seen the secondary give up i the past.
