Practice squad move

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 20, 07 05:28 PM

The Patriots announced the signing of TE Jason Rader to their practice squad today. To make room for Rader on the eight-man practice squad, the team released QB David Greene from the practice squad.

The Patriots have only two tight ends on their active roster -- Kyle Brady and Benjamin Watson -- and likely felt they needed an extra player to handle some of the practice duties.

A bit from the team's press release:

Rader, 26, was previously signed to the Patriots practice squad on Sept. 3, 2007. He was placed on the practice squad reserve/injured list on Sept. 25 and was released from the practice squad reserve/injured list on Sept. 30. The 6-foot-4-inch, 260-pound tight end has played in five career NFL games - all with the Miami Dolphins in 2006.

  1. I wonder why the Pats didn't resign Marcellus Rivers, whom they previously gave a 2 year contract before cutting. Maybe he didn't fit in, but you think they would have figured that out before extending him a contract.

  1. I can't believe Manning was ahead of Brady until now. Are people voting based on the number of TV commercials or performance on the field?

  1. JT,

My guess is that Rivers was ineligible to join the Patriots practice squad. Remember that the Patriots had to waive Rivers and Ventrone to activate Eddie and Chad Jackson off the PUP. Ventrone was eligible to return to the practice squad (after clearing waivers) so the Patriots re-signed him. During games Hochstein and Vrabel fill in at TE for the team's specialty packages (goal line offense, jumbo packages) so there really was no real need for Rivers during the game (as long as Watson and Brady are healthy). I'm sure the Patriots would look to re-sign Rivers if either BW or KB go down and Rivers has not signed with another team.
