Stat check

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 16, 07 06:00 AM

The Patriots did not play last week, as they were part of the final group of teams with an off weekend. Every team in the NFL has now played nine games and there are no more off weeks.

On the statistical front, there were a few minor changes for the Patriots during their off week, as they fell one spot each in red-zone offense and red-zone defense:

Points scored
This week: 1st (39.4 per game)
Last week: 1st (39.4 per game)

Points allowed
This week: 5th (16.3 per game)
Last week: 5th (16.3 per game)

Turnover difference
This week: tied-1st (plus-11, 20 takeaways, 9 giveaways)
Last week: tied-1st (plus-11, 20 takeaways, 9 giveaways)

Third-down offense
This week: 3rd (49 of 98, 50 percent)
Last week: 3rd (49 of 98, 50 percent)

Third-down defense
This week: 1st (30 of 99, 30.3 percent)
Last week: 1st (30 of 99, 30.3 percent)

Red-zone offense
This week: 3rd (43 possessions, 30 TDs, 69.8 percent)
Last week: 2nd (43 possessions, 30 TDs, 69.8 percent)

Red-zone defense
This week: 31st (21 possessions, 14 TDs, 66.7 percent)
Last week: 30th (21 possessions, 14 TDs, 66.7 percent)

STAT OF THE WEEK: Patriots opponents have an average drive start of the 24.6 yard-line, meaning they most often have to drive the long field to score. That ties as the fourth best mark in the NFL.

  1. According to Football Outsiders the Patriots' opponents have an average drive starting position of 25.05. This is the best in the NFL by more than a yard (Tampa Bay is second)

  1. Hi Jason. The official stats pack, produced by the NFL, lists the Patriots at 24.6, tied with the Vikings and Falcons. Only the Buccaneers (23.6), Jaguars (23.8) and Chiefs (24.1) are better.

  1. Hi Mike,

    Great job with the blog!
It would be nice to have Pats upcoming opponent's stats included in the weekly stats update for comparison.
