Ups & downs

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff November 19, 07 02:01 AM

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- A look at who's up and who's down from the Patriots' 56-10 win over the Bills:

Up

  • QB Tom Brady -- Finishes 31 of 39 for 373 yards, with five touchdowns and no interceptions, setting the Patriots franchise record for touchdown passes in the process.

  • WR Randy Moss -- Receiver totals 10 catches for 128 yards and four touchdowns, breaking the franchise single-season record for receiving touchdowns in a season.

  • S James Sanders -- Forces a fumble, adds four tackles, deflects a pass and was particularly solid in run support.

  • LB Adalius Thomas -- Sees his most extensive time at outside linebacker in a 4-3 alignment and finishes with a career-high 2.5 sacks.

  • Kickoff coverage team -- Unit comprised of Kelley Washington, Brandon Meriweather, Larry Izzo, Eddie Jackson, Kyle Eckel, Rodney Harrison, Heath Evans, Pierre Woods, Rashad Baker, Willie Andrews and Stephen Gostkowski keeps the dangerous Bills in check (18.1 avg.)

  • Offensive line -- Left tackle Matt Light, left guard Logan Mankins, center Dan Koppen, right guards Russ Hochstein/BillyYates (rotation) and right tackle Nick Kaczur combine to hold the Bills without a sack and give QB Tom Brady the necessary time to operate.

    Down

  • RB Laurence Maroney -- Finishes with 19 yards on six carries (3.2 avg.) -- and except for his 6-yard touchdown run was not decisive in his cuts before leaving with a foot injury in the second quarter.

  • WR Donte' Stallworth -- Drops a pass in the first quarter that could have gone for a touchdown before redeeming himself later in the game and finishing with five catches for 56 yards.

MONDAY PLAN: We'll be traveling back to Boston in the morning and will plan to check in with the participation of offensive skill position players with our next update.

    1. The offensive line should be at the top of the list. Going into a raucous hostile environment and playing the game they played is just fantastic!

      - No sacks allowed
      - No false start penalties
      - No holding penalties

      Wow!

    1. We need to have someone give Matt Cassell some quick punting lessons. Then, ala George Blanda, he can serve both as backup QB and punter (not that we need one all that often) and free up a roster spot for someone else.

    1. Amazingly, the Patriots can clinch the AFC East division title in November with either a Patriots victory or Bills defeat this coming Sunday.

    1. About Maroney, you may have a point unless he was injured or BB was saving him for later? The O-line didn't seem to perform as well during some of those runs and I thought he made a couple yards on (atleast 2 plays) where a defender should have wrapped him up for a loss.

It will be interesting to see how the passing game plays out in the colder weather (not too concerned). Still, I'd enjoy seeing the running game pick up a little bit to keep defenders honest.

    1. In reading your Down section you mention Donte Sallworth for the first quarter drop however you don't mention Randy Moss for his drop, I understand that Moss had a big day however his drop was just as important as Stallworths so I don't believe he should be on down list. I do believe Hobbs should be for his foolish looking defense on the Bills only touchdown.

    1. You can add Ellis Hobbs to the down list as he continues to be abused for big gains.

    1. I agree with abcdef, the functionality of the new website is frustrating.

    1. Yeah, I love reading your blogs, but this new setup is annoying. I used to come here Monday afternoon and read all the blogs about the Sunday game on the one page and just scroll down, but now I have to click previous entry everytime. Just food for thought. Keep up the good work.

    1. A quick tip on navigating the new blog:
If you click on the big "Reiss' Pieces" sign on the top of any blog entry, it will take you to the whole long list of the 10 or 15 most recent entries like it used to show up on the old site.

    1. Hi abcdef, Mike and K-Man. Try this link:

      http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/reiss_pieces/

This is an adjustment, but I think will be a positive going forward. You can link to two parts of the blog from the main page. When you link directly on the latest update, you get just the update. When you link to the top part that says "Reiss's Pieces" you should get all the entries. That's the link above.

    1. Given the 49ers troubles, I wonder if Darren McFadden may be available to the Pats at #2 or #2. Obviously, it would be out of character for the Pats to take a RB that high (if they can't trade down), but given the unreliability of Maroney, that would be interesting to consider

    1. I didn't think Ellis Hobbs played that deep ball that poorly. He had good coverage, he turned to look for the ball, the ball was under thrown, the receiver made a good play to adjust and catch the ball. Things happen. If the ball as on target, Hobbs might have had an interception. If you run that play 10 times, they might complete it 3 times, Hobbs might intercept it once, and it might go incomplete another 6- that's just the nature of the game.

    1. Hobbs was beaten on an earlier pass too, when he played 10 yards, or more, off the line. He is constantly beaten, and IMO, the weak link in the secondary. He is better off inside. Might be time to give Randall Gay a start at corner.

Overlooked, once again, was the play of Jabar Gaffney. Not a lot of catches, again, but some really key, and difficult one.

    1. I think Ellis Hobbs gets a pass for the fact that he had a few passes very well defended (including another long, deep ball by Losman), another couple of solo tackles, and a fumble returned for a touchdown (thereby negating the seven points he gave up earlier).

As for the new layout, my only gripe comes from the fact that once you click out of the comment box, your text disappears. I don't know if this is a glitch only on FireFox, but it's quite annoying. For those that don't know, you can retrieve your text if it disappears by pressing Ctrl+Z.

    1. As for the Hobbs play. Yes, it's true he had good coverage. But you have to play under control. On this play he was not. He has to have better control of his body on these deep balls so he can make a play either on the receiver to keep him from scoring or to make a play on the ball. I know it's tough but he can do better.
