ANALYSIS
Analysis from the first half, with the Patriots leading 17-7:
A couple of big special teams plays – blocked punts – set up scores for both teams. That has been a big part of the story today.
For the Patriots’ offense, breakdowns in critical situations have kept the score down – namely not converting third downs. The team has still used some of its spread packages, but the Jets’ scheme is doing a nice job disguising its intentions before the snap, making things difficult for Tom Brady to read. The Patriots have won the battle at the line of scrimmage and are running with authority, often calling for multiple tight ends to power through the undersized Jets defense. But the passing game's inability to convert in critical situations has kept things close.
Defensively, the Patriots have been sharp, outside of a 49-yard rush by Leon Washington. The team is in its base 3-4 and has played sound football. Richard Seymour had one of the plays of the day, applying pressure that did not allow Kellen Clemens to step up, setting up Eugene Wilson’s 5-yard interception return. The defense is also getting off the field on third down, and deserved credit for ultimately handling the Jets’ option package with Brad Smith at quarterback -- after Leon Washington's long gain -- which was a significant change-up.
The elements have played a factor, with punter Chris Hanson unable to handle the slippery ball, leading to the Jets’ points.
The Jets get the ball to start the second half. As long as the Patriots avoid turnovers, they should be in command if they play as they did in the first 30 minutes.
