2008 schedule

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 26, 2007 09:31 AM

With the Pittsburgh Steelers clinching the AFC North title in Week 16, that means the final piece fell into place for the 2008 New England Patriots schedule.

As part of the NFL's pre-determined scheduling formula, the Patriots already knew 11 of their 13 opponents next year. They also knew that they would play the AFC North champion at home, and the AFC South champion on the road.

So now that the Steelers have clinched the North, the final spot is filled on the 2008 schedule:

Home games
Bills
Broncos
Cardinals
Chiefs
Dolphins
Jets
Rams
Steelers

Road games
Bills
Chargers
Colts
Dolphins
49ers
Jets
Raiders
Seahawks

  1. The traveling for those road games looks terrible. 4 West coast games and the Colts in the dome. The road games couldn't look much worse than that. I wonder if they end up with back to back west coast games?

  1. And the New England Patriots Fan Club Of Arizona will make their annual trip to Foxboro, for the game vs. the Arizona Cardinals. Hope it's not a late December game.

  1. While I know the schedule is pre-determined, this one doesn't set up well for us. Why oh Why do we get Indy on the road (again!!!)? The Steelers are probably saying the same thing about us. I just hope the NFL has some sense and doesn't schedule any of our 4 West Coast trips back to back. That would be murder. Actually they would fit us best if one was before the bye week and one after.

  1. So, if the Patriots are having a really, really bad year they could lose 3 games - Steelers, Chargers, Colts. So the worst they could do (in my eyes) is 13-3. Not a bad year!

  1. Come on guys. Of those 4 WC games i count only two potential tough games (SD and SEA), the other two (SF and OAK) are manageable.

What I'm really concerned is IND away. This is going to be the second year in a row we play there.

Good thing is that we're going to face the Broncos at home and not at Mile High, a place that has been traditionally tought for the Pats.

  1. The schedule was made before the 2002 season for 2002-2009. There is no conspiracy against the Patriots on who they play each year and at what location. It all rotates.

  1. That is a tough and brutal road schedule. The pats have not traditionally done well in the west coast (Losses in OAK and SD in 02). The most recent playoff victory in SD is almost a gift from them.

But as a Pats fan in Seattle, I'm really excited. It would probably be my first NFL game in my live. I don't think Brady played in Seahawks Stadium yet in his career, but it is LOUD!

  1. I realize the schedule is predetermined, but why do we face to the Colts away two years in a row and opposite for the Steelers?

When can we expect to see the Colts at home? Just curious how the schedule is determined.

  1. This time last year people were saying the Patriots may go 11-4 with the "tough" schedule we had. The NFL changes year to year in regards to how well teams do. Only the Colts will be a tough game, otherwise it won't be any worse than this year

  1. Wow, this is a killer schedule. Lets hope for the 19-0 this year, because I can't see how it could be duplicated next year. Lets just enjoy this even more. Maybe they can win 22+ straight regular season games at least next year!

  1. Don't forget, the Indy game WON'T be in the RCA Dome next year.

The Colts will be moving into their new retractable roof "Lucas Oil Stadium" facility for 2008. It will be interesting to see how loud that building is with the roof closed.

I imagine that the NFL rules regarding closing/opening the roof prior to/during games will be scrutinized as well. Watch for Polian to push the Competition Committee to liberalize those rules, allowing the Colts to maximize the perceived advantages...

  1. 4 of the 5 non-divisional road games are long trips. Hopefully the league will put two in a row so we can stay out there and not have to fly it each time.

But, it is our turn and it happens to each coastal team every four years that they have to rack up the miles to play their schedule. Imagine if they start putting teams in Europe...

The schedule is no tougher than this year just more travel.

  1. Parity applies to the schedule. Keep in mind that the Jets, Dolphins and Bills will also play the AFC and NFC West teams next year, and half of their games will be out west.

As for Indy, how can anyone complain about a Brady/Manning matchup, wherever it is? Either one can beat the other on the road. Bring em on!

  1. That's a pretty weak home schedule (at this moment in time). So when the Pats win the Super Bowl, it's either the Jets or Steelers to kick off the season on Thursday night. No one else is at all appealing in terms of an interesting match-up.

  1. It is so hard to look at this and start predicting records for the '08 season. This is the NFL. One team can look great one year, and then lousy the following year:

The Jets were a Wild Card team last year, and this year they've only won 3 games. The Rams were supposed to be explosive with Stephen Jackson & Co. and then everyone got injured. The 49ers looked promising with Frank Gore and a young QB...now they're a mess (thank god that did happen with the Patriots owing their 1st round pick). Green Bay was horrible last year and look at them now? Do I even have to start with the Atlanta Falcons???

It's so hard to continuously win in this league. That's why the Patriots and Colts is such a great rivarly. They are without a doubt the two best teams in the league and have been for the last 5-6 years. The NFL would absolutely love it if these two teams were in different conferences. Teams like the Steelers and Chargers will always good, but they still have yet to get past the Pats or Colts.

Going to Indy is always going to be tough, and traveling to the West Coast four times in a season is definately a lot. But you can't start predicting records now...alot could happen with the Patriots this off-season, i.e. Randy Moss & Asante Samuel???

  1. At INDY could be opening night (a Thursday?)... and as defending champs... big teevee ratings because Pats will be going for 20th consecutive win... and 23rd consecutive regular-season win... then, with the extra days off, you can bet they'll be off to the West Coast for week two.

The lousy part about this schedule is not so much the four West Coast games, but the near certain fact that the Pats will have so few Sunday 1 p.m. games... you can bet they will be all over the place -- NFL net on Thursdays... Sunday and Monday nights. If the league's money grubbers could find a way, they'd have 'em open in March, in Japan, as part of a Bosox/Pats doubleheader.

As always, it rolls down hill to the fans, whom, sadly, eagerly await... mouths wide open, washing down with many beers what the NFL shovels in.

We should find better excuses to drink away the weekend.

  1. Well, there's a real possibility that the Pats will host the Colts in the playoffs, so that would result in a pretty even home/ away split with the Colts over the course of the last several years. No complaints here. In addition, it's always tough to judge a schedule a year in advance. I heard a lot of talk regarding the "brutal" schedule we were dealt this year, and so far the Pats haven't seemed to be adversley affected. A lot can change during the course of a season, never mind an offseason, so we'll see how strong this schedule truly is at the end of next year.

In the meantime, we have a compelling game against the Giants and at least one home playoff game to watch. Enjoy the ride!

  1. don't sweat it johnd - Moss ain't going anywhere.

he took a huge pay-cut to come play with BB & Brady because he wants to win. They're doing just that & it's gonna be enough incentive for him to do so again.

Like Brady (accepting less than he's worth) Moss will stay here to continue winning. It's what he wants more than anything & he's showed it all year both on & off the field. After finally getting a RING, there's no way he'll want to play for another team and chance being "stuck" in another rut like with Oakland.

His "crazy" money will come in the form of commercials, advertisements, endorsements, products, etc. Not to mention he's setting himself up as a desirable commentator after retiring (from the Pats, by the way) as long as he continues with his current attitude. (and of course, he's going to) His #81 jersey will also be retired by the Pats, when he finally calls it quits.

    As for you resoxaholic...that'll be 38 - 0

Why are the Pats playing the Colts again? Gee, I don't know. you think it's cause they BOTH WON THEIR DIVISION?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

And why would playing on the West Coast four times be a conspiracy? They played SEA and SF at Gillette in '04, and OAK and SD home in '05. The rotation works out like that.

Plus, the focus in the off-season will be to strengthen the defense. Revamp the linebacker corps and add two major cornerback to replace the out-going samuel(free-agent) and hobbs(under performing). Once those issues are addressed, we'll end up right back in the superbowl.

  1. In addition to your annual 2 each against the Jets, Dolphins, and Bills, you get the Raiders, Rams, 49ers, Cheifs, Cardinals and Broncos. Its like the NFL wants you to start out 12-0 before the season even starts. Sure one or two of those teams may turn it around next year and be real playoff contenders, but then again it equally likely that the Seahawks or Steelers may go the opposite way.

The best season ever had by any team in the history of the NFL, and next season you have only 4 games against teams with winning records? You've got to be kidding me. If you swap the Steelers for the Browns and the Colts for the Jaguars you have EXACTLY the same scedule next year as the Bills! Its very possible that next year those subtitutes will be the better teams. And if you swap the Steelers for the Bengals and the Colts for the Titans you have the same schedule as the Jets!

With the schedule they're giving you, they should make you go from a Sunday night game in San Diego to a Thursday game in London! Don't worry, that one would be against the Dolphins anyway....at least then there would be some other factor to make up for the ease of schedule.

I think these Pats fans are complaining more than anything because it'll be more difficult for them to go to these west coast road games. Well I guess you'll just have to dig a bit deeper thats all, or just accept a crowd without as many fair-weather NE fans.

If you want to see a tough schedule, look at the Steelers (see comment 53). I think they'll be a wildcard team at best next year. Then again, thats why they play the games...

  1. SOS (strenght of schedule) has the steelers with the toughess .598% schedule and the pats with the easiest . 387%, but thats excluding the Steelers and colts games. All this doesn't mean much , teams improve over the off seasons. Plus I'm a firm believer that on any given Sunday a team can be beat especially if you have a solid defense.

Defense wins championships and that was proven once again when the Giants
beat up on my favorite sports team.

Congrats to the giants. I hope the road to the superbowl goes thru N.E.
    again next year.

As a fan I don't make predictions because I don't suit up and play on Sunday's. I just always hope for the best when the pats play every week.

Going to the west coast is no big deal hey the weather is nice and Brady is

  1. justin i agree, this schedule is not that hard we can absolutely go undefeated again. Sure its not good that we have 4 west coast games but brady could stay home while we play oakland and SF and i think wed still win by 20. Belichick owns the chargers and seahawks arent that good. The colts are on the decline, harrisons probably done, the pats will go 19-0 this year. Ill be the first to say it

  1. The west coast games won't be that hard since we've already tied up our offense for 2008 pretty much, unless our defense gets worse which hopefully it won't. But... then again, losing a game or two might actually be more useful in winning Super Bowl XLIII

  1. The Jets look like they **might** be slightly more competitive next year, and there's no telling what the Tuna will do to Miami. It's probably safe to say that Miami will have more wins next season than they did last year. The three other teams that concern me the most are Indy, Denver and San Diego. Indy is always tough, and they don't seem to be losing players like we are. Denver always has our number. In fact I think Shanahan is one of the few coaches with a winning percentage rating over Belichick. San Diego is out for blood to avenge all the losses we've handed those guys in the playoffs. (Did anyone besides me notice that SB referee Mike Carey is a San Diego native? I'm just saying... ) If key players stay healthy, I think 11-5 might be the worse of it. I just hoping for another planetary alignment that will have us going undefeated. I think we'll all feel the sting from the Super Bowl again when that first lost of the regular season occurs.

  1. Yep, well he have the draft. we only lost one person on our O line and added more. Bruschi and Moss, our leaders are back. were getting younger players and we draft really well since we have the best in the buisness. we still have FA to look forward too. i see another superbowl ring in boston. i also see another championship for the red sox. going to be a boston year again.

  1. Four west coast games......all will start after 4:00pm....how many games will be on Sunday night or Monday night. The price of success is we get screwed. What happened to 1:00pm games. If you want to watch the Pats..be sure to take an afternoon or early evening nap.

  1. the pats had it all go their way last year and they did not finish... they had a short trip to ny the last game and then were home after that... they were home the week before the ny game I think... it won't be as easy this year...

  1. For all of you Colts haters that think the NFL is out to get you with such a hard schedule. These schedules have been set since 2002 with the exception for 2 games. The only two that could have varied were the Pittsburg & Indy games. You won your division and so did they so you play them, the idea is simple. You should really learn more about football before posting so many ridiculous comments. By the way you play 4 games against opponents had a winning schedule in 2007. Indy on the other hand is playing 4 opponents that had a losing schedule in 2007. I am in no way complaining about the Colts schedule, I am actually rather excited. Good competition is what football is all about. But I really do sympathize with your horrendous schedule. More so because using spy tactics on losing teams won't help you as much as normal.
