'72 Dolphins react
A few comments from members of the 1972 Miami Dolphins, courtesy of the Dolphins' media relations department:
Tight end Jim Mandich
"My sincerest congratulations go out to the Patriots. In this salary-cap era, free-agency ara, I didn't think it could be done and the Patriots did it. They are a remarkable team. If somebody was going to tie the Miami Dolphins record in the regular season of going unbeaten, it's appropriate that it would be the Patriots because they are a class act."
QB Bob Griese
"I want to congratulate the Patriots on going undefeated during the regular season. I know Tom Brady well because he played at Michigan with my son, Brian. I've followed his career ever since then and have the greatest respect for him as a player. He is having one of the greatest seasons ever by an NFL quarterback, and his outstanding performance has been a major factor in the Patriots' success this year."
Guard Bob Kuechenberg
"They've done a heck of a job thus far but now the exhibition season is over and the real season begins. Obviously, if they can win their first playoff game, beat an even more dangerous Colts team, and then Brett Favre or the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl, I will be the first to take my hat off to them. If they can pull it off, they will have earned it. But my heart is dead set against it. The '72 team is uniquely immortal in American sports and I don't want us to lose that special place. ... Imperfect is mortal. Perfect is immortal."

I don't think the team records are comparable, just as I don't think Moss breaking Jerry Rice's record is comparable. Miami went only 14-0 in the regular season and the Patriots went 16-0. Miami went only 17-0 altogether and the Patriots will be 19-0. No comparison in either case; advantage clearly to the Patriots. Moss broke the touchdown record in 16 games and Rice set the mark in only 12. Again, no comparison; Rice clearly retains the advantage. On the other hand, Brady breaking Manning's mark is directly comparable because both marks were set in 16 games. In this case, Brady once again proves he is the better quarterback, albeit by a slight margin. What a great play for both Brady and Moss to breaks those records, though. A fantastic play to cap a fantastic game and a perfect season.
I love Rice. I was born a Giants fan and he and Joe Montana and that whole gang were great. I loved the Giant/49's battles. That is when I first "met" BB. I have been on his bandwagon since then, but I digress.
It was a strike year and nobody's defense was very good for most of the year. Further, it was his choice to sit out those games but the NFL held them. He was around 18 TD catches in most of his other years? Was it because he and Joe were playing well against really poor teams or did Rice just have one really good year. I know my Giants were not playing good Defense until the end of the year. That strike rocked most of the players and all of the teams. I think it was a product of both. There are no excuses just facts. Go Patriots, 16 of 19 well done, now it's time to finish.
does it matter Rice caught some of those 22 TDs against "scabs"?
