Belichick hard on team

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 19, 2007 03:01 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- One theme prevalent today while speaking with players at Gillette Stadium was how Bill Belichick was tough on the team this morning.

"Everybody came in today thinking and trying to predict what kind of day we were going to have [and] in the team meeting, we got about 45 minutes of humble pie," cornerback Asante Samuel said. "Nobody expected it. I mean, he was just giving it to us, showing us what we need to do better, and everybody pops up on the tape. Nobody’s perfect. Everybody’s making bad plays or making mistakes, and he just wanted us to see that and realize that we need to improve in certain situations if we want to be a good team."

Quarterback Tom Brady echoed Samuel's thoughts.

"Coach gave it to us pretty good today," Brady said. "We've made plenty of mistakes. Especially the last month of football, I don't think it's been our best."

  1. Go Bill. Keep em in line until after the super bowl. Don't let em get full of themselves now!

  1. I would expect nothing less from Belichick. He has a keen sense of history and I feel he wants to go undefeated more than he lets on.

  1. A good Jockey knows when to go to the whip - and that's exactly what Belichick's doing now. The only thing team that's going to beat the Patriots are the Patriots - and Belichick knows that.

  1. Brady and Moss killed me in fantasy this week. After being carried by the Brady to Moss combo.. they had to have a bad week for fantasy playoffs. Go on Bil, force feed them that HUMBLE pie. So they are good and full come the real playoff time!!

  1. obviously coach can see a lot of mistakes being made on both sides of the ball in a critical time of year, this team is not playing well and better get it right in a hurry 16-0 means nothing if you get ko,d in the first or second round

  1. They may have a 14-0 record but none of that will matter if they don't play up to their capabilities come January. Brady is right in saying they haven't played their best football this month. I have complete faith that they will tighten their play up and play their best football here on out like like the champions they have already showed us they are time and time again.

  1. "Don't tase me, bro,"

We'll see how the Pats (who have everything to loose) do this weekend against the "Mighty Dolphins" (who have nothing to loose).

  1. Brady had a poor game, secondary had a poor game, bad tackling, etc. I think Brady has to be drilled for his one dimensional offense. He does have other receivers.

  1. He is a great leader who does his homework so that his players can be the best they can be - it's an ideal dynamic - the players trust that his emotion is related to their deepest interests - this team is a case study on what it takes to be a successful team - while the media tries to reduce this teams success to spygate, they fail to make a deeper and more thoughtful study on something we can all use, a real example of what it takes to excel.

  1. "He's overrated. 8 all Pro's-- I could coach that team to 16-0"

What about the 3 out of 4 World Championships with about 8 TOTAL Pro Bowlers for 4 seasons?

You're right in that they are 14-0 for good reason, but I think that's common sense. The overrated part is a bit, well, dumb.

The Patriots finally looked like they BELIEVED they were unstoppable against the Jets, and that's when you lose. Luckily Maroney was well rested from not having to do anything for 14 weeks.

  1. 14-0 means SQUAT. Without a 4th ring, this season means nothing. Bill knows this and the players know it. Sometimes even the best need to be reminded of how much better they can be. GO PATS!

  1. Are you all HIGH. Brady had a bad game. The secondary didnt tackle. The receivers dropped balls. Blah Blah Blah. I have been a season ticket holder for 15 years and I can tell you those were the worst weather conditions I have ever been to for a game. I can take the cold, the snow, the rain but that was just plain nasty!! OH by the way they won a game against a division team (which is NEVER easy) and they are 14 and 0 so stop bitching. One last thing. To the person that was bitching that "pretty boy brady" better wake up! you are obviously a kid that got the kick crapped out of him on elementary school playground and you probably live in your mothers basement. Go Coach Bill!!!!!!

  1. I hope he tore into Brady something fierce. Brady has been putting up Madden numbers all year, but Sunday against the Jets he was making decisions like he was ACTUALLY PLAYING IN A MADDEN GAME.

Stop playing for the stats. You haven't been playing for them all year, and you're team is 14-0 and you are looking at breaking a few records. Why change what you are doing? Get'em Bill.

Ross Murray ... you cannot manage the ego of your wife dude ... get that first in order dude and then worry about managing the ego's of 8 all Pros and the 45 other Pro footballers and winning 3 Superbowls with the 4th one on the way.

Bill is the greatest ever ... he manages and converts these individual egos into a Team ego and that is what makes our Pats the greatest in Pro Football.

  1. This is a lovefest, and especially heartwarming during this season of cheer. This team makes me giddy, they're so good. But I have to say that, for all the praise heaped on Josh McDaniels, he's not as creative a game-caller as Charlie Weiss. Merry Christmas to my brothers in Patriotland. Pats 42, Fins 13.

  1. Simmer down all you "Give em hell Bill" waterboys - this isn't a college team, it's a veteran pro team nearing the end of a long season.

You think Belichick didn't give out the 'humble pie" and 'the whip' and 'no mercy' after the Eagles and Ravens games? You think this is the first time he's shown them the mistakes they've made after every game? The players aren't idiots, then know when to expect their coach to lean on them.

No one's winning-one-for-the-gipper in Foxboro so they don't need any speeches. If you think football players do, then you need to settle back in your armchair and watch the games they show on Saturday afternoons.

  1. I would expect nothing less from Bill being hard on the team. The game against the Jets should have been much more dominant, even in inclement weather. He is the best coach we could possibly have in this situation. We are almost there, they cannot let up now after coming so far. Go Bill, serve up that humble pie. You the man.

  1. HI Jim I'm from TN also read before you post PLEASE. You know how we are talked about. Why the hell are people worried about the colts? If they do make it to the Razor the only thing to worry about is the Ref's. I have watched them play when the real deal football team isn’t playing. I can tell you this Jack Del-Rio was mad enough to fight the ref’s in the last match-up between the Jags and colts. And last Sunday in the colts/ raiders game. On the raiders last drive they were stopped on fourth down. Because Curry could not get his arm free from the colts DB’s hands. It happened about the goal line with a ref standing right there! GUESS WHAT NO CALL. Even the announcers could not believe it. And while I’m on the box. WTF? The colts boast a hard-hitting defense? Is this the same colts that cried to the league that the Pats were too physical with their WR’s

  1. #18 Sully is dead right, you lot are far too quick to pile on.

Conditions were awful and the Pats went into the game knowing they were going to run the ball a lot, and hand it off to a much slated running back who is better than a lot of Pats fans give him any credit for.

It seems that lately, if the Pats aren't blowing teams away by 30+ point margins the sky is falling in.

There's no team in the playoffs that can beat this Pats team. The Colts had their shot and lost and the scoreline frankly flattered them at the end. They got no Freeney to torment Matt Light now and their running game has gone into the tank now that tems can play the run honestly cos of Marvin Harrison's absence.

If any team can derail the Pats in the playoffs, as presently constituted, then you'd think it would be the red hot Chargers. But they'd likely to have to get past the Colts first and then come to frigid Foxboro. With a so/so QB and no passing game.

Let BB dish up the humble pie. But don't start getting all Red Sox on this team just because they aren;t blowing teams away every week.

What about the Cowboys with their 11 all pros then?

Pretty naive to think that a football team is the sum of its parts. The Patriots - past and present - have shown us over and over again that this is not the case.

Give credit where credit is due - Bill is a great coach.

  1. Remember when the Patriots stunk and couldn't even make the playoffs? I do. Now we expect them to win every game by 21 points, Brady to throw for 400 yards and 6 touchdowns or people start bitchin' and coming up with things they can do better. Shut up and be happy we are not the Dolphins. Only the playoffs matter now so keep your bitchin' until January, but I doubt you will need it.

  1. You know, I gave up football back when Sonny Jurgensen retired & I'd seen most of the Legendary Teams of Yore (if there's a yore anymore. In those days a lot of the Patriots starters spent weekday evenings at the HAWAIIAN LUAU restaurant & bar at Speen St. & Rte. 30 here in town, drinking Scorpion Bowls and hitting on the Chinese girls. I tuned into pro football this year when a nephew of mine gave me the word. I'll tell you, I am still amazed. I'm not even all that much of a fan anymore, you know, but maybe some of you people don't have the perspective.... This NE team is unquestionably the very best pro football team ever to play the game. Ever. Tom Brady & Randy Moss? A match made in heaven. Asante Samuel'll be a legend by himself. But Belicheck, there ---I sure hope he has an extremely kinky and wild private life, because otherwise he has to be a total psychotic to keep that kind of focus on football. There has been and never will be again a team like this ---it's like a collective Bobby Orr. I just hope no drug scandals come out to destroy the beauty of this thing ---I watched the Big Bad Bruins, and they were like some VFW post team compared to these Patriots. I read a story a while back where a sportswriter in New York said that he'd had to give up actually talking to people about seeing Babe Ruth play baseball, because people thought he was insane. It's like that now, trying to describe what it was like to watch Bobby Orr play. It's going to be like that when you all try to describe this New England Patriots team to your grandchildren (assuming the planet lasts that long.

  1. Humble pie is certainly needed in that locker room if this 19 - 0 dream season is to be accomplished.

yes, the blow-outs were nice - but too many games have been FAR closer than they should've been...although we were fortunate to walk away with the Wins.

Weather & all, the performance against the Jets, in particular, lacked far too many things.

My biggest concern there (and should be EVERYBODY else's too) was Brady's performance - or lack of.

The Hell with pushing Randy Moss to break Jerry Rice's record...if it happens great, but DON'T be forcing a ball to him while he's totally covered & SEVERAL other recievers are WIDE-OPEN!

This happened several times last week and is simply inexcusible!

Hey Bill - do you need some bigger plates for these guys appetites?

Keep going this direction & it will be a big dis-appointment to not make it to Arizona...

Shove that pie down thier throats till they puke & we'll be sitting pretty with a Superbowl that ends Patriots 27 - Packers - 17

Yeah that's right Cowboy fans that are eaves-dropping...you're chumps are going nowhere...
