Bill on SI cover

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 27, 2007 07:27 AM

Credit Bill Belichick with a sense of humor.

One week after panning himself for an old YouTube video in which he was making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, Belichick chuckled when he saw the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated.

Bill Belichick as Santa Claus?

"Just when you thought you’ve seen it all, something new comes along,” Belichick chuckled. “It’s a pretty funny and strange use of technology. I doubt there are many kids out there dreaming about their pictures on magazine covers quite like that but I’ll take it as a compliment that someone decided to turn me into Santa Claus.”

  1. I guess they (SI) could have picked a better picture of him (it reminds me of president Nixon, the media always showed pictures of him not in a very nice way but at the end he proved to be a great president) same with the coach, but you need to remember he is not the PR man fot the Patriots, he was hired to win games and at that, there is no one better.

  1. Luis, I think that was the intended look. The Patriots are on the verge of going undefeated and Bill still has his poker face going. Notice the caption below the picture... "Happy (?) Holidays"

  1. Giants stand about as much chance as a snowball in a pizza oven.

They have the wrong Manning, no Shockey, no killer instinct and their coach is more likely to end up on the unemployment line at season's end as opposed to a lock for the hall of Fame.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Giants rest more starters that the Pats as they have to play next week. That will surely give NY sportwriters fodder that the Pats were "given" their perfect season by the Giants.

  1. The sidebar says that Mass. teams have been on the SI cover seven times since October 1. If you just go back two more weeks, to September 17, it's eight. Randy Moss doned the cover after week 1 of the NFL season.

  1. I believe this is the Jim Carrey/Grinch version of the Santa Claus costume - hence the wild furriness of the suit and the matching scowling Belichick demeanor.

It is definitely meant as more of a play on his Grinch-like qualities (to opposing teams) than his Santa-ness.
