Bill on 'tired team'

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 6, 07 11:12 AM

FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his Thursday press conference at Gillette Stadium (10:50 a.m.) and was asked about the team's altered schedule this week after playing Monday night.

On Wednesday, the team did not practice.

"I made a comment the other day that our team was tired," Belichick said. "I think at midnight, or 1 a.m. -- whatever time it was Monday night, Tuesday morning -- we were tired. But it's [Thursday] , the game is Sunday afternoon, and we'll be ready to go. At the end of a week like that, playing on the road, playing a tough game, sure, that takes something out of you. We bounced back yesterday and we'll be at it today, and we'll be ready to go Sunday. We play once a week. We have all week to get ready for the game, just like everybody else does, and that's what we're going to do."

  1. Mike, this is only kind of related to the tiredness issue, but I'm worried that the Steelers will take their cue from the Ravens and try to rough up the patriots receivers for more than five yards, and that the refs to let it slide (like in Baltimore).

One reason I think Baltimore got away with this is that Brady didn't try many short passes to the receivers: he was forced to look for the deep ball or take the sack cause they were being mauled. So, wouldn't it be smart to throw a bunch of 7-10 yard passes early in the game to make the refs call it? Its easy to look the other way on an extra five yards of contact when there is a deep throw (or none at all), but it's harder to not call it when an incomplete pass is thrown to a receiver *during* the illegal contact.

  1. Pats are cheaters. When you cheat you win in the short run but you loose in the long run. Steelers will be ready. They are the most physical team in the NFL. The Pats haven't faced a team this phyiscal other than Baltimore and Baltimore made stupid mistakes. Steelers won't do that. So I hope the Pats are ready.

  1. When Moss and Watson run 10 yards down the field and initiate the contact, it is not illegal contact. I'll bet in the next several weeks the Pats receivers will not be getting away with this anymore. The only time that you did see that on Monday night (unless you were in the Stadium) was when they DID call the illegal contact on Rolle.

  1. How do you "loose in the long run". I don't understand that phrase. Loose is an adjective. Also, this will be the 3rd time this year that the Pats "have not faced a team this physical..." - it has been said with the Colts, the Ravens, and now the Steelers. 12-0 - why is that so difficult to grasp?

  1. The Pats are the crown jewel of the NFL
every team has employed the video taping advantage as we all know.
I hope we stomp the Steelers.
It will be nice to play in our house.

  1. The true mark of a champion team is how it faces adversity. Twice the Pats were down. Twice the Patse came back. Can't stop them. They didn't have the motivation to play the Ravens nor the Eagles. They were losing teams and its tough to get yourself up for those games. This one will be different. Watch for the REAL Pats to show up again. PATRIOTS 34, STEELERS 10.

  1. The Patriots will maul the Steelers worse than when we did it in the AFC championship game at Heinze Field. What was that game 48-27 loss to the Pats after they had their superbowl plans all set lmao?? They have no clue about physical, the Patriots are the best and most physical team in football. After they stomp the Steelers sunday you can write us down in the record books as the greatest team in NFL history!!!! Because NO ONE WILL STOP THEM!! They will break every record this year too. Then you can all cry about the Pats cheating since they did it after all that, so there is no doubt!! "Make no mistake, let there be no doubt, run it up!!!"

  1. Sounds more like you'd prefer the Pats to not be ready...which would be your only chance to see the steelers get a win. Steelers? puh-lease!

  1. I thought that the Ravens defensive strategy was excellent. The rushed 4 or 5, they did not play a 2 gap system, they rushed thru the gaps to pressure Brady. They doubled covered Moss, dropped the linebackers into the short passing lanes, bumped and held they receivers and challenged the Patriots to run the ball.
The Patriots need to find their running game but Maroney cannot hit the holes between the tackles quick enough or pick the right hole like Faulk and Morris. Maroney is great in space but not good for the quick hitters. I think they need another running back, maybe Cory Dillon.

  1. People who say 'loose' when they really should say 'lose' need to be sent to pasture. So Davis, thank you for playing and come back when you learn remedial grammar. But it is funny to read comments from a team like Pittsburgh, which we recall was making Super Bowl reservations before they had even played in the AFC Championship game. A game, by the way, that was at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. A game, by the way, that Pittsburgh was humiliated in. Now we have a Steelers player no one has ever heard of 'guaranteeing' a Pittsburgh victory. They never learn down there; they never learn.

  1. Don't love how frustrated the Steeler fans are that they come to the Globe to vent. I guess when you've played 4 poor games in a row and have lost the last 2 AFC Championship games at home to the Patriots it gets to you.

  1. Yes the Steelers are sooo good and sooo physical. That's why their record is soooo good.
Without the officials they would not have won that last Super Bowl - they know it and we know it

  1. The Steelers are physical. Apparently, by your Davis scale which measures physicality they are actually first in being physical. So physical that they play Olivia Newton-John's "Let's Get Physical" in the locker room before a game.

Three games when they did not do this:
    Loss to Arizona
    Loss to Denver
    Loss to Jets

But it worked magically when the physical Steelers managed to physicalize their way to a field goal after 4 quarters, against the Miami Dolphins. Although winless, the Dolphins register high on the scale of Davis Physical Points.

  1. Davis, you said "when you cheat you win in the short run but you loose in the long run". The pats are winning in the short run and in the long run (that is why they are referred to as a Dynasty). I think you just proved that the pats never cheated!

    Thanks!

  1. The Pats are going to spread this team out with 4 and 5 WR's and light up their lack of depth at corner. Pats 35 Pitt 21

  1. Pats will beat the Steelers. The Steelers could not even beat the Jets and only beat the pathetic Dolphins by 3 points. The Steelers will run their mouths and the Pats will run away with the Super Bowl trophy.

  1. The Steelers will lose because they are not as smart as the Patriots and having lost 4 of the last 5 games against the Patriiots proves this. Their game plans are predictable. They have some excellent players but they are not anywhere near good enough to beat the Patriots. The Patriots are due for a breakout game after being held down the last two weeks.

  1. God I really hate Steeler fans. Before you start talking negative about the Pats perhaps you should stop and think back to the fact that the Steelers have lost to the horrendous Jets and Broncos and the mediocre Cardinals. On top of that, you were lucky to beat the winless Dolphins at home. Spare me the "weather made that game closer than it should have been" argument. if you were that good the weather would not have been that large of a factor. This week the Pats will expose you for what you are... a mediocre team.

  1. The Steelers are so vastly overrated. Remember - this is a team that only a couple of weeks ago lost to the Jets and needed 59+ minutes to beat the Dolphins by a field goal. The Patriots will beat these guys silly on Sunday.

  1. So what if the Pats loose a game or two. I would rather see a regular season loss than a playoff loss. The goal is not to go undefeated. The goal is to win the superbowl. The trophy is the same one, whether you were undefeated or not. Having said all that, I hope they stomp the Steelers!!

  1. I love beating the Steelers cuz they never get, its not about image its about something they lack that the Patriots prove over and over again, its about substance.Let your play do the talking so you wont have to break down crying when its over =remember Ward Hines Meltdown when da Pats put a beating on them a couple years ago to end thier season! I do Im sure he does too! LMAO

  1. In Response to Davis:

The questionable cheating issue which means squat to a team like the Patriots was in the first game, what is your excuse for all the games post CHEATING game! If the Steelers had the game book of the Patriots they still could not beat the GREATEST TEAM OF ALL TIME!

  1. KevGuy - Anthony Smith should keep his mouth shut. What a fool - I couldn't agree more.

But here is a history lesson for you since you seem to have forgotten your 2004 history. The Steelers manhandled the Patriots 34-20 on Halloween, making the 6-0 Patriots 6-1. The Steelers went on to beat the 7-0 Eagles the very next week 27-3 and went 15-1 for the season. The Steelers got manhandled by the Patriots in the AFC championship game 41-27 (not 48-27). I suggest you get your facts straight before you type.

Look, the Patriots are dinged up and tired right now. The Steelers clearly have a chance to win this game, but obviously the Patriots are the best team in football right now and so they should be favored. May the best team on Sunday win.

  1. Your arguments to the effect that because the Steelers were not able to beat the Jets they are unworthy are flawed. Look the jets are 3-9. The Ravens are 4-8 and we in the AFC North look at the Ravens as being a similar team to the Jets - they are terrible. The Steelers manhandled the Ravens 37-7. Does that mean the Steelers will beat a team such as the Patriots who barely escaped the Ravens. Of course not. It is meaningless. What matters is this: The Steelers are 9-3 and have the best defense in the league period. The Patriots are 12-0 and have the best offense in the league period.

Whoever shows up and plays better offense (Patriots) or defense (Steelers) will win. Period.

  1. Even the Jets beat the Steelers.
    What tdoes that tell you?
    The Pats are cheaters?
Thats why they are beating NFL teams and averaging almost 40 points scored!
A few of the posters are little peoplewho are not objective but addicted to chat trash.
Whatever happens, the Patriots went 12 and 4 last year with NO receivers.
The Super Bowl ( although is was the AFC championship)was the Indy-Pats game in the covered stadium in Indy.

    NO WAY THIS YEAR!!!

  1. Steelers fans are as pathetic as college football fans from the south. The main difference between the Pats and Steelers is if the Pats lose, Pats fans don't get all whiney. Steelers fans act like kids when they find out there is no Santa.

  1. Right...the Ravens and Eagles had effective game plans against the Patriots and came up short at the very end. Pittsburgh should employ the same sort of defensive system agains the Pats because everyone knows that Bill Belichick doesn't know how to make adjustments when his team runs into an effective defensive plan.....so, Steelers, be sure to try the same thing this Sunday because it's bound to work for you....bwahahahahahahah

  1. There is no arrogance with the Patriots, only hard work and determination, not to mention team.
The only reason Baltimore and Philly looked good is they tried to emulate the Pats and the Pats were playing conservatively to avoid injuries going into the playoffs. We are already in. You think??

  1. Anyone who Its still posting this cheating thing is a moron. The spy gate tapes have nothing to do with whats going to happen on the field this week. The steelers will be tough but remember they have had some terrible let downs themselves. Look at the jet game. What happened to the steelers there? They have also won a couple more by the skin of their teeth. The steelers D is very good but the O is just average. The Pats ave every team coming at them with their A Game. Every team gets pumped to beat them and play with more intensity then they would under normal circumstances. Mentally all teams are ready to take out the Pats. The media gets all excited as well. i believe the Pats play under a microscope because they haven't lost yet. Every little thing is magnified and over examined . every call is looked at under a magnifying glass just like in thee raven game. They cried about the calls. Its going too be this way the rest of the way till they lose or go the super Bowl. Its a lot of jealousy !! BIG TIME JEALOUSY

  1. I don't believe the steelers are good enough to win, granted any team can beat anybody i.e. steelers losing to lamo teams this year and not to mention barely winning alot of game.. but I find it hard to believe That the steelers "D" is as good as the ravens, being #1 rated defense is deceiving when you play shitty teams like the steelers have. The best "playing" team this sunday will win, and as long as the steelers think the bengals have the best wide recievers we'll kill the great steelr "D" We've played alot better teams than the steelers have like the cowgirls and colts..
