Defensive look
From time to time, we'll take a look at the snaps played by Patriots defensive players.
Here are the snaps played against the Steelers:
S James Sanders -- 68 of 68 snaps
OLB Mike Vrabel -- 68 of 68
OLB Adalius Thomas -- 67 of 68
CB Ellis Hobbs -- 66 of 68
CB Asante Samuel -- 66 of 68
S Rodney Harrison -- 65 of 68
ILB Junior Seau -- 50 of 68
NT Vince Wilfork -- 45 of 68
ILB Tedy Bruschi -- 44 of 68
DE Ty Warren -- 42 of 68
CB/S Randall Gay -- 41 of 68
DE Jarvis Green -- 40 of 68
DE Richard Seymour -- 39 of 68
S Eugene Wilson -- 23 of 68
NT/DE Mike Wright -- 15 of 68
S Brandon Meriweather -- 3 of 68
LB Larry Izzo -- 2 of 68
OLB Pierre Woods -- 2 of 68
(snaps include one offensive holding penalty on Willie Colon, which was drawn by Mike Vrabel)
ANALYSIS: It was an ironman effort from the likes of S James Sanders and OLB Mike Vrabel. In particular, Vrabel was immense as a pass rusher and in the run game. ... The Patriots liberally rotated their top five linemen in the first half before going to a four-man rotation in the second half, with Mike Wright remaining on the bench. ... Starting ILBs Tedy Bruschi and Junior Seau are being asked to do more with OLB Rosevelt Colvin lost for the season. In addition to early-down work, Bruschi stayed on the field in the nickel package (5 defensive backs), while Seau was the dime linebacker (6 defensive backs). With the Patriots playing their dime in the last two series (16 snaps), that upped Seau's snap count over Bruschi's. ... CB/S Randall Gay was the nickelback, while S Eugene Wilson came on in the dime. ... The lone snaps not played by starting CBs Asante Samuel and Ellis Hobbs came in the goal-line package. ... That's also when LB Larry Izzo came onto the field. ... S Brandon Meriweather's lone snaps came on the final three plays. ... OLB Pierre Woods's two snaps came on the Steelers' last two series.

It's too bad he wont win the award, but there is no doubt Vince Wilfork was the best defensive player in the NFL this week.
Stinks that after one week Meriweather was bumped back off dime... Wilson didn't do anything after having the spot handed to him.
I think this is something you should post everyweek for the remaining three games & playoffs as it is just as interesting to go over the defenseive looks as the offensive groupings.
I hope the rest of the NFL recognizes the great year Vrabel is having by finally getting him on the pro-bowl roster.
Glad to see Geno back on defense. I thought he made a couple of nice plays when they went to their nickel and dime packages.
Finally, great job Mike. Hope you continue adding more features to the pre- and post-game coverage.
I'm glad to see Wilson get some more playing time. It seems they are working him back in slowly. I'm not sure why Ryan (above) doesn't feel Wilson deserves time but he has been a starting FS on this team for several years. I also think they are going to need him, because I believe he adds significant speed and cover skills in the middle of the secondary. Both Harrison and Sanders are good safeties but neither has great speed. Harrison's experience makes him decent in pass coverage but Wilson is much better.
I think the missing element in the middle of the field during the Eagles and Ravens games was Wilson's speed and cover skills. Now that he is been back on the field we won't see a lot of those big plays up the middle any more.
I am an embarassed Steelers Fan living in NE. I now admit that the Steelers are frauds and the Pats own the boys in Black and Gold.
I like Wilson's experience and skill set but I don't like his history of nagging injuries that keep him off the field every few games. I think that Merriweather in a year will make most fans completely forget about Wilson. Its just taking longer than many expected or hoped for him to see the field. I guess some people simply don't learn as quick as others.
great job by Mike Reiss and the globe sports staff in putting this information together
..interesting how the defensive line is kept fresh by playing in only two/thirds of the total defensive plays!
Hey, Mike, thanks for all the great work you're doing to give us information on our Pats. Your blog is one of the best sources of information throughout the week, and I find myself coming here everyday.
Thanks again!
I'm actually one of the few that doesn't like how Pees is rotating the line. Keeping your guys fresh is good, and Green and Wright are good players that should see some snaps, but it seems he's rotating the guys without any regard for the situation. Seymour and Wilfork are clearly the most stout against the run, but on more than one occasion we saw Green or Wright out there against crucial 3rd down or 4th down and 1 plays. If you go back several weeks against the Dolphins, they actually put out a 4 man pass rushing alignment (with Green and Adalius at DT!) against the Dolphins tight set on 4th and 1. It just doesn't make much sense.
Hello Mike,
Would it possible to get Defensive look for Baltimore game. I wanted to see, how much Meriwether played in that game. Thanks
