Locking in on Moss

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 17, 2007 11:36 AM

When QB Tom Brady reviews Sunday's game against the Jets, he will likely determine that there were a few times he forced balls into WR Randy Moss when throwing to other receivers was a better option.

In all, Brady threw in Moss's direction on 13 of his 28 pass attempts (includes a play in which illegal defensive contact was called).

Moss finished with five catches for 79 yards, so the completion percentage was not ideal.

The breakdown:

First drive
2 of 3 passes to Moss
1 completion, 5 yards

Second drive
6 of 7 passes to Moss
3 completions, 28 yards

Third drive
0 of 3 passes to Moss

Fourth drive
0 of 3 passes to Moss

Fifth drive
1 of 1 passes to Moss
Interception

Sixth drive
0 of 2 passes to Moss

Seventh drive
0 of 3 passes to Moss
Includes an illegal contact penalty that doesn't count as a play

Eighth drive
4 of 5 passes to Moss
1 completion, 46 yards

Ninth drive
0 of 1 passes to Moss

  1. From my easy chair in front of my new HD TV and my roaring fireplace, it would be too easy to second guess Brady. I am sure it was a bit more uncomfortable out on the field. If he was forcing it to Moss, I am sure he will be the first to see it on the tapes. With his remarkable ability to correct and adjust, I am not worried. (Even though I live in Northern Virginia, I maintain the New England tradition of a REAL fire going during the game. A link to my childhood, with no dad around to make me chop wood!!)

  1. You are absolutely correct. Brady is forcing passes to Moss when other receivers are open. We always talk about he is so good at distributling the ball, but not lately.

  1. I was surprised the game plan under those conditions didn't try to hit Stallworth and Welker short and let them run after the catch. At some point they should have realized that they couldn't throw deep.

For the first time in the Brady era I thought they may have been more focused on getting closer to records than winning. I hope I am wrong. I want the record for them but not at the expense of winning.

  1. The busted plays in the first quarter and the forced passes to Moss make me think Tom had other off-field things on his mind Sunday.

Who was at fault on the busted plays? Tom usually barks at someone if they miss an assignment but he didn't those plays.

  1. What has made the Patriots difficult to defend, even with less than stellar receivers, is that they were so good at spreading the ball around and finding the open man. Defenses literally had to cover everyone. They also did an amazing job of putting together offensive gameplans that squeezed every ounce of ability out of our talent and kept defenses on their heels the entire game.

That has not been the case the last several weeks. First it was just Welker and Moss that got the ball and now its just Moss. Brady isnt even going through his progressions anymore. He is locking in on Randy and throwing the ball whether he is covered or not.

Welker and Stallworth could have tore that Defense up with their ability to run after the catch and, as the replays showed, they were open alot of the time. I wonder how much of Moss being in Brady's ear all of the time about "Just throw it - I'll make a play" is rubbing off on him. Remember when Brady was on the sidelines apologizing to Moss for running for a TD rather than throwing to Randy?? That should have been a sign of what was coming.

Brady needs to go back to what he has done his whole career - and soon - or the Pats could see an early exit from the playoffs. If Moss pouts on the sidelines so be it.

  1. Let's not get carried away people. 21 different Patriots have scored TDs this season. Did Tom forced the ball to Randy Sunday? Yes. I'm sure they were both hoping to break their records this week so they could come out of the next 2 games early. Let's not forget the other 13 games this season in order to make Moss some sort of bad guy he isn't.

  1. I have noticed this myself. It was long before this game though. By the way Stallworth didn’t even start in this game. It was Gaffney at number two and he had his fair share of drops. The Welker and Gaffney pass to drops maybe a stat to look at also. Brady on the sidelines apologizing for running the ball? What number are you Chad? Can’t find your name on the roster? Or did you hear the talking heads say this? I hate to see Brady throw over the top of WDE OPEN receivers myself, but remember when he makes these catches it breaks the will of the opposing defense. Look like an off day with the wind not helping things to me. 13 of 28 not a good ratio on any team to any player I agree but lets not run off Moss just yet! For along time all I’ve seen is people ask is. Will we be able to keep Moss after this year? Now one game and lets kill Moss And Brady. Sounds like collage coach talk to me.

  1. Against the Jets, Brady "forced"it to Moss too many times when he was covered & others were open...no doubt about it. But if you think BB hasn't slapped them both up-side the head (& showed them the film 600 times) to make sure it doesn't happen again you're just foolish.

Brady will beat Manning's Record before it's all said & done (maybe even against Miami) and maybe Moss will get his too...but you can be sure that happens - ONLY if he starts getting open. (which could very well be against Miami also)

Brady will be throwing to the OPEN reciever this Sunday and Anthony Smith could probably even guarantee it!
