Newsday follow-up

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 12, 2007 12:02 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- A lot to cover here at Gillette Stadium today, and we'll start with the conference call with Jets coach Eric Mangini (11:45 a.m.).

Mangini was asked about today's Newsday report that the Jets were asked to stop videotaping during a game last season at Gillette Stadium.

The Q&A:

There is a report in Newsday that a Jets employee was asked to leave Gillette Stadium last season, possibly for videotaping their coaches. Is that an accurate report?
"What we do every away game is tape our team from both end zones, whenever it's possible. We always ask for permission to do that. Usually it's granted, provided there is a physical space to do that, it's to get the same angle you get in practice. Anybody that asks us to do it, we extend the same courtesy. It's pretty common, one way or the other, depending on how teams like to like at their game tape. That's really what it was."

In other words, you thought you had permission but perhaps you didn't?
"No, we had permission."

And they still asked you to leave?
"Yes, they did."

Mangini was also asked if the Jets were, at all, taping the Patriots' defensive signals.

"No," Mangini said.

He was then asked if the Patriots requested similar permission to have someone taping at various angles or end-zone angles. Again, Mangini replied simply: "No."

Material from the Associated Press was used in this report.

  1. Mike - wouldn't the Jets be breaking the same rule the Patriots broke (and were punished heavily for), whether or not they received permission from the Patriots or any other team? It seems to me, that they would be in direct violation of the video rule that Goodell emphasized.

  1. So Mike, if the Jets get permission every week to tape the game from the field, is someone watching to make sure they NEVER point the camera at the opposing teams coaches?? Afterward, is someone reviewing every minute of their tapes? Not likely, I'm guessing.

The whole "spygate" thing really appears to be a ridiculous technicality...

  1. The Jets are cheating! We should put an asterisk next to all of their recent achievments. Oh wait they have no recent achievements. Serves them right for cheating.

  1. How is the video that the Jets' videographer was allegedly recording any different than the "coaches tape" that comes from the cameras situated high above the end zones? I thought those films were made available to any team in the league, as well as certain media outlets.

  1. i seem to recall an ESPN article regarding the videotaping rules in the NFL that clearly state that you can tape a football game, but only from certain parts of the stadium....the patriots taping from the sideline was a clear violation of a rule that they had been warned about. ... i don't know what the difference is with the part of the stadium that the jets were video taping from or the permission that they had but i nobody seems to be stating that they broke any policies. Clearly a lot of videotaping goes on during any game and it does seem "ridiculous(ly) technical"

Either way, spygate may be the best thing to happen to the patriots since Craig James

  1. I feel that Mangini made a mistake when he tried to grab players/couches from us when he made the move to the jets and for that he was wrong. I am sure that other teams are not happy that he brought it to the attention of the league that we were doing the taping. For that I hope Brady and Company wack them for 60 points this weekend. To bad it is going snow/rain I can see with 4 min left in the 4th. Brady will be chucking 60 yard passes to Moss when we are up by 50 points!!

  1. So how come the Jets get to film from field level but any other team that does this will get their 1st round draft taken away and a heavy $$ fine? Mangini just admitted to CHEATING by filming games from the endzone. Will the Commish investigate this or just brush it under the rug?

  1. This explains why Mangini turned Belichick in. I guess the mentor never considered that the pupil might turn the tables.

  1. Belichick is a master. His last comment about the ballboy might well have described his relationship with Mangini before Mangini embarked on his cavalcade of disloyalty.

  1. Unfortuantly it has never been clearly communicated that 'video taping' sees nothing more than anyone with binoculars can see and record. Additional, signals are often changed, hidden, or anti-info-signals installed. So really it's a technicality, and is a mute point. For some reason these points were never made public! Why not is my question? This all could have been put to rest in the beginning, without all the damage, and hopefully now it will be now. But first media must stand-up and communicate! Please!!! G. 1. The Jets have lost ten games so far this year. The Man-Moron has only come up with an excuse for the loss to the Patriots. What about the other nine losses? Maybe the Man-Moron has convinced Woody (Jets owner) that the Patriots shared the taping info with all the other teams.

  1. The Jets are beside themselves w/ joy that the press is devoting so much time to the Spygate issue this week. Otherwise, they would be forced to address more relevant lines of questioning like: "if you are such a genius, why does your team stink"?

  1. I could never understand why information that's being displayed in front of 80,000 people is not, by deffinition, considered "public information". And if a coach is concerned about signs being stolen then why not just change the signs on a regular basis or have more than one person sending in the signs. This whole thing is absurd. The BB haters in the media like Tom Jackson and Bob Costas are having a field day.

  1. Gary, as you can probably surmise, the media has absolutely no interest in putting to rest a story (or non-story for that matter) that is guaranteed to continue to sell media views. So yes, they could very easily have put this story to rest, but think of all the website hits and blog posts that never happen then. That's advertising bucks gone down the drain.
