Penalty call

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 3, 07 11:36 PM

Ravens LB Bart Scott was called for a penalty not often seen -- throwing a referee's penalty flag into the stands. He had also been flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty before that call.

  1. How was Scott not ejected? Between the two penalties, throwing the flag, having to be restrained by his teammates....if this were the MLB or NBA, he would have been tossed. And he should have been.

  1. Great job for calling a timeout on 4th & 1, no faith in his own defense!
    Time for a new coach!

  1. The Ravens beat our Pats tonight. The game would have ended but one of thier coaches called a time out a quarter second into the play on fourth and one. But thier men beat our men tonight.

  1. It came down to the Raven's, coaches and players being an undisciplined team

  1. The Ravens lose in style. (Cleveland in OT earlier) Bart Scott's flag throwing skills may give him a future after he hangs up his pads. Or perhaps as a short reliever. Either way, I can't really blame him. The Ravens D really played hard and that last drive would have frustrated the Dali Lama. Great game. Pats once again showed the metal of a champion team and found a way to win.

  1. Watson was held for the entire route and then was hit in the back during the throw...the refs actually gave the ravens a break by calling the lesser penalty instead of pass interference

  1. yeah it's the pats' fault the guy can't control his temper...and lets talk about how Watson was held through his whole route, not to mention offensive pass interference on the hail mary....give me a break.

  1. "i knew the refs would find a way to give the pats the game. :)"

That really makes no sense considering that it wasn't a judgment penalty. He either did it or didn't do it. There was no way for the refs to "give the pats a game" in that situation.

  1. Yeah, the itiotic play by Boller on the interception and the bone head time out call on the 4th and one had nothing to do with it. Face it, the Pats play well at clutch time when other teams choke, like the Ravens did. They played with a ton of heart, but NE overcame in the end.

  1. WA WA... I can hear the Ravens crying from here. It's amazing some have had the audacity to question whether there was "really" a timeout. The replay clearly showed the coaches calling a timeout. It's one thing to disagree with a holding call (which it clearly was), but to blame the refs for a timeout is ridiculous. And how about the blatant offensive pass interference on the last play of the game that was never called. That could have decided the game.

The Pats missed a chance to pin the Ravens on the final possession. They needed to have Gostkowski aim for a coffin corner. If it goes into the end zone, it's a touchback anyways. If it goes out of bounds, the ball is placed either 30 yards from the spot of the kick (the five yard line) or where it went out of bounds. Either way, you have a good chance of putting them inside the 20.

  1. BostonBob(by): I will agree that Baltamore's OL and DL did a great job tonight. But on that 4th and 1, they showed a replay from the sideline where it was clear that the whistle was blown *before* the ball was snapped. The play, as run by the Pat's didn't work. But the fact remains that the D Coord. for Baltimore screwed the pooch on that one. After that play the Baltimore D lost all composure. They shot themselves in the foot and the Pats WON. There are no moral victories in Pro sports.

  1. Somebody please explain what happened on that last return kick and how the 3 penalties came into play or were a factor at all.

  1. I don't think as many of the penalties against the patriots were as out there as everyone thinks. Earlier in the season (Indy, Philly, etc.) refs were making BAD calls, missing blatant holds, interference that just wasn't, and calling a receiver in bounds, when he obviously wasn't (Indy). The Ravens just collapsed. They have pretty much the same if not better talent than compared to last years 13-3 team. The missing factor: Chemistry. They have no faith in their coach, and vice versa. They are FAR from professionals, the key being Scott's tantrum. I think that the Patriots out classed the Ravens. That's right, I said it. OUT CLASSED. Good teams capitalize on mistakes and, that's right.... win ball games.

  1. Throwing a flag into the stands..isn't that extremely dangerous? Isn't that thing weighted on one end? Scott should have been tossed from the game.

How is offensive pass interference not called onthe last play? Someone pushed Gay almost out of bounds and I think Mason was hugging Samuel like Hulk Hogan put wrestlers "too sleep" in the ring.

  1. The Ravens showed a total lack of maturity, composure, and professionalism and that's why THEY lost the game. The refs didn't force them to hold players, commit pass interference, late hits, throw a penalty flag in the stands, and to call a defensive time out. BS was lucky he didn't draw a 3rd penalty for swearing and trying to attack an official and get himself thrown out of the game. The timeout and the false start on RH happened BEFORE the plays, so the plays never happened.
