Positional groupings
A look at the positional groupings utilized by the Patriots during Sunday’s win over the Dolphins:
4 WR/1 RB – 42 of 63 snaps
3 WR/1 FB/1 RB – 10 of 63
3 TE/1 FB/1 RB – 8 of 63
3 WR/2 RB – 2 of 63
1 WR/2 TE/1 FB/1 RB – 1 of 63
ANALYSIS: Bill Belichick made the point after the game that the Patriots stayed with a four-receiver approach because of a shortage at the tight end spot. ... It was interesting to see the 3 WR/2 RB package make its return, as that had not been called upon since the Oct. 1 game against the Bengals. The results were mixed -- Jabar Gaffney's 48-yard touchdown catch came out of that package, as did the second of Tom Brady's two interceptions. Laurence Maroney and Kevin Faulk were the two running backs. ... The 1 WR/2 TE/1 FB/1 RB package appeared to be a special installation at the goal-line, as that was the grouping that produced Randy Moss' second touchdown.

I don't understand...weren't there a number of sets where there was an empty backfield (no positioned running backs)?
Hi Seth. These are positional groupings, which list the number of offensive skill-position players on the field. It doesn't go as far as showing where the players lined up. So there are times in that 4 WR/1 RB package when the RB is actually split wide as a receiver. Other times, the RB is in the backfield to pass protect.
mike, you said we had 3 TE's in for 8/63 snaps.. but you also said players were counted at their natural positions, not where they lined up... then who were our 3 TE's? we only had one true TE, i think.
Hi Rob...OTs Ryan O'Callaghan and Wesley Britt came on as TEs, and were announced by referee Ron Winter each time. Because they were officially announced as TEs by the officiating crew, they are counted as TEs in the breakdown.
