Record audience

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 5, 2007 05:09 PM

Monday night's game between the Patriots and Ravens attracted the largest household audience in cable television history and broke the record for most viewers, ESPN reported today.

According to ESPN's press release, Monday Night Football averaged 12,529,000 homes (based on a 13.0 rating), breaking the record for household audience set last year when the network averaged 11,807,000 households for the New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys on October 23 (based on a 12.8 rating).

In Boston, the game delivered a 28.3 rating on ESPN and an 8.3 rating on WCVB-ABC, for a combined 36.6 rating. In Baltimore, the game delivered a 12.9 rating on ESPN and a 24.6 rating on WJZ-CBS, for a combined 37.5 rating.

  1. Have you all seen the Steelers defense? Its much better than the Ravens and they gave us fits. They are young, fast and just cocky enough not to realize how big of a stage this is. As much as I hate to admit it....they have a very good chance of winning this game

  1. If we beat the Steelers, this team will go undefeated. Barring a collapse, they face the Jets and Dolphins at home, and finish on the road against the inconsistant Giants. This is gonna happen. And I'm gonna be there to see them do it at the Meadowlands too!!!!

  1. It's time the folks who are responsible for ESPN's broadcast realized that people tune in to enjoy a football game, not to hear three comentators competing to upstage one another. Tony Kornheiser was even more obnoxious than usual with his cheerleading for the Ravens. According to him every move the Ravens made was "fantastic" or "sensational."
There were times when I thought I was tuned in to a lame comedy talk show that was occasionally interrupted by a few football plays.

  1. Of the four remaining games on the schedule, the Steelers have the best chance of breaking the undefeated streak. New England has the one player that makesthe difference. Tom Brady. Pats remain undefeated.

  1. To Stan..... Comment number 1... RIGHT ON MAN !!! LMAO..... However, I do have to say his presentation of Belichik Monday night was pretty funny. But personally... I dont care for him either. They need to hang him from the booth by his shoe strings.

  1. What are the odds of Randy Moss and Benjamin Watson each dropping touch down passes in the same game (or any game) again??? Any other game, they each make those catches and the Pats win by 17 instead of 3. The Colts were not as close as they seemed. The last 2 have been the perfect "tune ups" to take it a step upward. Watch and see.

  1. Monday's game was so good, I watched it twice just to make sure that dreamy ending actually happened.

  1. Monday Night Advertising, brought to you by NFL football. As usual I had zapped out, overwhelmed by ads. I surfed away with the Pats down 10-3. Do I count as a viewer?

  1. Top reasons why I think we're going to lose this week:

    1. Our age is starting to show, and our receivers are soft.
    2. Their DBs are much more physical than any DBs we have played this year.
    3. They are the "Steelers", not the "Ravens" or the "Eagles". Just as the Patriots get more than their fair share of calls by the officials, so do the Steelers (Super Bowl XL). This should take the refs out of the game. "Our" officials have been exposed.
    4. Last week they shut down the Bengal receivers who are similar to ours, and probably better as a unit.
    5. They're getting three starters back this week.

I think we're in trouble this week. I hope coach has enough tape on Tomlin and the Steeler coaches.

My prediction: Steelers 44 Pats 8. Pitt should start kneeling mid-way through the 4th quarter.

  1. It's going to be a battle, and no team plays smash-mouth football as well as the Steelers... Now the Pats are probably the best at finesse and execution but how are they going to react to the most physical team they’ll play this season? We’ll see on Sunday…

  1. Yeah, no one really is supporting Smith's comments here in Pittsburgh. Sure, the Steelers have the league's No. 1 defense, but that's a bit misleading. Teams have been able to throw on the Steelers (Cutler, Warner, Clemens ... none in Brady's class) and Sunday could be a long day. In fact, LB James Farrior even rolled his eyes when Smith said this. It's OK. I expect a loss for the Steelers, and as long as they don't get slaughtered, I'll be fine with it.

  1. I think Patriots go 16-0 but lose the Super Bowl to Packers or Cowboys.
