Refs & penalties

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 2, 07 11:10 AM

Walt Anderson's crew is scheduled to referee Monday night's game between the Patriots and Ravens in Baltmore. This marks the first Patriots game that Anderson's crew will call this year. Counting Monday night's game, the Patriots will have had a different crew in each of their 12 games this season.

In all this season, New England has been flagged for 58 accepted penalties. That ranks as the ninth fewest in the NFL. The Ravens, on the other hand, have been called for 79 accepted penalties, the fifth most in the league.

In terms of the Patriots' penalty breakdown, here are the players who have been flagged for most accepted penalties through 11 games this season:

  • WR Randy Moss – 5*
  • LT Matt Light -- 5
  • OLB Rosevelt Colvin – 3
  • CB Ellis Hobbs – 3
  • OL Logan Mankins – 3*
  • OL Stephen Neal – 3
  • TE Benjamin Watson – 3
    * also been flagged for one declined penalty that is not included

Furthermore, here are the penalties that have been called most against the team this season:

  • False start – 14
  • Offensive holding – 6
  • Offensive pass interference -- 4
  • Special teams holding -- 4
  • Defensive pass interference – 3
  • Unsportsmanlike conduct -- 3

    1. Don’t mean to be an alarmist, But we better be looking at who is doing the calling in these games. The more big games we have this season the more I see ref’s calling bad calls. Moss has had at least 2 TD’s taking away. The Patriots/ Colts game was a joke, and the Dallas /Green Bay game had many calls going Dallas’s way. I see things shifting from the Colts to Dallas, as the team the media tells the world to love. Most people can’t make choices on there on and if the news people say it than it must be so. Look at the post you see, most of the things listed is what some reporter said. I don’t think anyone knows what pass interference is. If the NFL NETWORK is on 24 ,7 how about a show on the rules. AND IF WE FANS DON’T DO SOMETHING SOON ABOUT KEEPING THE GAMES IN THE U.S. AND ON PUBLIC T.V. We’ll all have to guess what happened. If the power heads are going to do something, how about regulate the price of tickets that brokers sell.

    1. The Refs all need to go back to school. The last 4-5 years have been terrible for the refs. As a Pats fan, it seems like the rules emphasis encouraged after the Colts whined in the AFC CG in 2003, no team has been punished more for it than the Pats. Last weeks Pats game was a travesty. Lito Sheppard and the Philly DB's pulled the shirt over Moss's pads at least 3 times...no calls. Moss does NOTHING and gets a flag? The Colts game was a travesty. The rules on instant replay have to include EVERY play except inadvertant whistles. Watching the Cleveland game today, there is no question that Kellen Winslow was pushed out of bounds, but because the ref on the field doesn't see it that way, it cannot be reviewed. That is awful. Officiating in the NFL is at a sad state and they need to serious address it.

    1. What I find interesting here is that half of these calls (14) are unnecessary i.e.: False start and unsportsmanlike conduct. . Unsportsmanlike should very rarely if ever happen. The same can be said for false start. They are area’s I am sure BB is working on. They are area’s that can always use improvement after all we are only 9th not 1st…, yet.

The rest are some what more expected and account for another 14. Some have not been good calls, but then we have also gotten away with a few non-calls, but that’s football. All in all, 9th out of 32, is a B but I would love to see it improve to A+.

    1. Thanks for the breakdown. Telling us the raking puts it in context and helps make sense of the numbers. The offensive interference is annoying. How often is that calleed league wide?

Different topic- Will the pats go older (Chad Brown) or younger in LB this week? I would love to see more play by our younger veterans in the LB rotation. The LB area is one of the few potential weakness I see on the team. And, the Pats LB's actually are very very good. Nice problem.

I look forward to when Marroney can catch and block like Faulk. What a great set of skills that would be in the shotgun!

      Go Pats.
