Rice talks Moss, record

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 13, 2007 07:51 PM

Former San Francisco 49ers receiver Jerry Rice, who holds the NFL record for touchdown catches in a season with 22, talks to the Associated Press about Randy Moss' pursuit of his record.

Rice tells reporter Howard Ulman that he will congratulate Moss (19 TDs) if he breaks the record.

"The only thing that bothers me a little bit is that I did it during the strike year," Rice says to the AP. "It was 12 games for me. If he had done it in 12 games, I wouldn't have a problem with it at all. But I'm still going to congratulate him and do all of that.

"But I'm surprised the league is taking it upon themselves to give him 16 games to do it."

  1. Another ex-player crybaby. I can't say I'm surprised. I hope when the call comes Randy is too busy to take it.

  1. Is this a joke? He can't be surprised that the league is GIVING him 16 games to break the record. Note to Mr. Rice, the NFL season is 16 games. It was a fluke you got to do it in only 12 games.

  1. Whoa. Would you like some cheese with your whine Jerry? Didn't he have the opportunity to catch more than 22 TD's in 16 game seasons? It's not RM fault that the NFLPA went on strike.

  1. Any thought that maybe the guy was joking around and not being serious?

I think a HOF wide receiver knows how many games are scheduled for an NFL season.

    Lighten up folks.

  1. During 18 different seasons, Rice played in at least 16 regular season games. His best TD totals during those seasons:

    17
    15
    15
    15
    14
    13
    13
    10
    9
    9

Only once did he put up at least 1 TD/game. Randy has done this four times (including 2004 when he only played in 13 games).

If Rice was capable of putting up record numbers during a non-strike season, he should have seized his chance.

Instead, his 22 TDs look like a fluke, the result of running up the score late on teams disrupted by the strike.

  1. Jerry Rice is universally considered the greatest receiver of all time, and he just happens to be ultra competitive??? Boy, What a Shock that is...

That being said, I don't think his comments were necessary or in good taste. He doesn't need to state the obvious to fans, thats what sportswriters and talking heads are paid to do, and he should have known better.

  1. 22 TDs in 12 games is much more impressive than 22 TDs in 16 games. Thats all Rice is saying. And I agree with him. What is the issue here? Now if Moss catches 2-3 TDs in the next 3 games and gets like 25 or 26 TDs. Thats a little different. But it should always be noted that Rice has the record during a 12 game season.

  1. I hope RM will catch 3 TDs per game for the final three games, so he will have 28 TDs for the season---no dispute then he will be the BEST. Plus, if he played with Brady his whole career, he would have close to 200 TDs already and Brady will have more TDs than Manning boy.

  1. I averaged it out, 1.8 TD's/game for Rice. Ask crybaby if Randy gets 10 more,(thats's what the average comes to in 16 games), will he wipe away the tears. To get 10 in 3 games would be incredible, but given some of his games and who they're playing, especially the next 2 weeks, it's doable.

  1. Jason posts the numbers against NFL players in a 16 game season. Everyone else discounts the strike season because you had a bunch of backups and off the street wannabes to make up the squads.

  1. Remember Jerry, that you did it in 12 games against "replacement players".

  1. Jerry should have let someone else point out the fact that he had done it in 12 games.

Now I expect him to tell me just how classy he is, like LT does.

  1. Who knows the context of his comments, he could have been saying some of it in "jest", but regardless the 22 TD number is definitely dicey at best. He got the record against DB's that were probably driving beer trucks the week before he played them. Considering the fits he gave professional corners he probably should have had 30 TD's!

  1. I thought he was joking (kind of, anyway; not many competitive athletes are entirely happy about seeing their shiniest records broken). Anyway, what difference does it really make? Moss and the Pats are thinking about more than individual records. And thanks to Eric for pointing out the steroid skeleton in the Panthers' closet. Nobody questions their accomplishments, chemically aided though they may have been. Three years later, people just shake their heads and wonder what happened to Carolina. Didn't they use to be good?

  1. Good grief, people. He was kidding.

And he did not play against "replacement players" in 1987. The replacement players only played three games against each other. If Rice had played against any of them he would have had a 15 game season (and probably would have added at least another 10 TDs on his record.)

  1. Now a Pats fan, but I was a huge fan of Jerry Rice and the 49ers in the 80's, having grown up in CA. I hope he was kidding, but the whole "record" thing is always a moving target. Certainly winning 16 games in a season is better than winning 14, and several teams have won 14 - but so far only the Dolphins have the "perfect season" title. Things change. Also, during Rice's career both Montana and Young threw almost exclusively to him when it really counted - so that helped his numbers tremendously. Gotta love a guy who had the crushed tip of his left ring finger amputated right on the sideline so he could go back in and play the game...
