Steelers guarantee

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff December 5, 2007 05:39 PM

In Pittsburgh today, safety Anthony Smith guaranteed a Steelers victory over the Patriots.

"We're going to win," Smith told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "Yeah, I can guarantee a win."

  1. Oh Brother! Don't they ever learn. I am sure his teammates and coaches are real please about this. As if a 12-0 team on a mission to eliminate everything and everyone who crosses their path, whose legitamacy has been questioned continually throughout the year, needs any more incentive.

  1. Sweet! This is just what the doctor ordered on short week's rest against a tough but flawed opponent. Someone put it up on Harrison's locker.

Come on, Pats! They open their mouth and challenge us now. How are we going to respond?
We need this. After 2 bad games, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED. Hope those guys in the locker room can hear.

  1. good for him, id be interested in knowing how many garuntees work out when it comes to the patriots. I like this kind of chatter, makes it that much more sweeter when we win. I wonder what kind of excuse they will have when we win again.

  1. Do the Steelers ever stop talking?!?! I'm pretty sure Hines Ward was behind Smith talking about how the best team lost in 2001. Does anyone in the AFC North ever shut up or stop making excuses?!?! What a bone headed move, this is great bulletin board material. By the way....who is Anthony Smith?

  1. Pats have had their eyes on this game for a few weeks now, maybe looked past the Eagles and Ravens with this one in mind. Remember Tomlin's remarks after 'Spygate' broke out? It's a guarantee the Pats do. Steelers will need extra bags to bring their body parts home with them after this one...

  1. They gave up 28 to the Browns, lost to the JETS; then played two straight mud bowls at home. Hardly an overwhelming record on which to base such a guarantee. Although, as a recent grad of Syracuse, 9 wins must make him feel like superman!

  1. The coach is right. Focus on one game at a time. The Patriots have the talent and intelligence to beat anyone. A 16-0 season depends a lot on keeping the whole squad healthy. "The road gets tougher. It's lonlier and rougher." I hope we run it up a bit in the 4th quarter if we can to shut up the critics up for awhile. rhdavignon

  1. Years ago I lived in Pittsburgh, and used to go to Pitt Stadium to see the Steelers play. This was before Three Rivers was built. Well one nasty rainy day in Nov. before the Steelers went to the AFC, they had to play the Eagles to see who got first pick in the draft. Even then the Steelers got it wrong. They won! Oh, and I remember another game I saw against the Giants, and they couldn't catch QB Fran Tarkenton for love nor money. Looks like they are on "Draft Duty" again, only this time in reverse.

    Way to go Steelers!

  1. Be careful what you ask for Pats fans. Last Season Smitty put housh out of a game when housh ran a route over the middle and this year in the preseason he knocked Kevin Curtis senseless when Curtis lined up in the slot and tried to catch a ball over the middle (you know sort of like Welker tends to do) don't get me wrong Smith is young and probably stupid for saying what he said but the NE WR's better have their heads on a swivel b/c this guys hits like a young Brian dawkins.........if you don't believe me just check out some of his hits on you tube.

  1. That's exactly the attitude that all NFL players should be taking against their opponents. It's the attitude that Philly and Baltimore came in with. Now a team like Buffalo on the other hand, flat out quit. They were not that overmatched physically or talentwise. Overmatched, sure, but not by anywhere near as much as those final scores would indicate. Mentally, they were toast before the opening kickoff.

It's going to be a great test for the Patriots and that's what they need right now, a test against another elite team. If they are not up to snuff it's better to find out now instead of in January.

Neither team needs any motivation other than what already exists.

  1. If the Pats are playing the way they have been playing in the last two games they will get beat by the Steelers. On the other hand, I hope the Pats don't let their opponents beat them at their home field especially the Steelers are the under dog.
I hope the Pats will gain some respect back after two closed games with the big under dog. If they can scores more and more then the starters can get some rest in the 4th quarter and the final results some thing like Pats 49 Steeler 14.
Steelers fans watch out! this is the NFL.

  1. Anthony Smith is a future Pro Bowl calibre player , who would start on most teams right now, was taken completely out of context. His statement was that if we( the Steelers) play a perfect game, completely error free game I can guarentee a win. Isn't that what every team will say? A perfect error free game means every O play is a touch down, every D play is a sack or interception. follow the logic.
Has having Belicheck infuence ruined the once proud and respected Pats fan? Steelers and Pats were once brothers-in arms as good solid respected teams and fans, don't let the dark side ruin you.

  1. All you Patriot smacks will find out who Anthony Smith is the first time one of your receivers goes over the middle and gets their head knocked off. The track record proves it, hit Randy once and he is invisible the rest of the day.

  1. Yes...this is the NFL Peter Pham! The Steelers aren't "supposed" to win this game. They play their best when they are the underdogs. And if the Patsies play like they have the past two games with their guard down and Brady rolling over and dying when a blitz is coming, the Steelers will win. They have nothing to lose. The Patriots have a 16-0 record to lose. Week to week...you never know what will happen in the NFL...GO STEELERS!!!!

Bad Ed, read the article on the Gazette website again. Where did it say anything about playing a perfect game? Don't try and make excuses for a stupid comment by an immature player popping off. The Pats seem to feed off this stuff and they are playing at home and it's not like the Steelers have been all that impressive in the past four weeks. Time to look in the mirror.

  1. C'mon, you expect the Steelers to be scared of a 12-0 team?! We're talking about the PITTSBURGH STEELERS here. The team that ended your Patsys 20-game win streak on Halloween 2004. Then went on to stop the Eagles win streak the following week, spoiling two teams potential for undefeated seasons.

Steeler fan fears nothing. 12 game win streak ain't nothing to fear.

  1. The Patriots are a finesse football team but not very tough. The Steelers on the other hand are a tough football team with a little finesse. Sunday’s game will be like watching an elephant stroll through a fine china shop. Patriot fans need to get their broom and dust pan ready to sweep up their broken dishes when it’s over!

  1. I love how all the Pats fans talk about how ridiculous it is to guarantee a victory...and then turn around and guarantee one themselves in the other direction.

It's going to be a good game, people. If you wanted to beat a team to beat the Patriots, they'd look a lot like the Steelers. Anyone who starts trying to pretend that Pittsburgh is somehow incapable of winning this game instantly loses their credibility. A Steeler team very similar to this one snapped NE's 21-game streak just a couple years ago.

Sit back and enjoy the game. And for goodness' sake, stop trying to pretend Anthony Smith speaks for the entire team. Sheesh.

  1. Oh I think Mr. Smith was misunderstood. He was jumping the gun and talking about the Rams. I understand now.

Can someone tell me what I will get if the Steelers don't win....Smith has money maybe a new car.

I think he should buy all the Steelers fans a new car. What does this Guarantee entail? Unless there is a deliberate "go out and take out a key player” not that the Steelers do that hmmm.. Brady in the afc championship that "Bledsoe" came in on or hmm does Palmer ring a bell just weighing in what the guarantee means... Oh well It will be great game. Oh did I mention as a die hard pats fan that I am 22-0 when I watch a pats game at the stadium.. I have tickets for this game .. Hope Smith doesn't block me from getting into the stadium...

1 more thing MR. Smith # 81 learn that number you are going to see it a lot and if you are dyslexic it #18 it is the same result. Goodluck steeler fans!!!!!

  1. Doug,
here is the proof from your own local paper "The kid hedged in many directions, indicating his team could win if it played a perfect game, but the part of his quote that sticks is, "We're going to win. Yeah, I guarantee a win on Sunday."" from the Boston globe. Only to prove his statement was interpreted to create a controversy between two teams who have been in big games before.
So Pats fans and reporters need to be able to perform a little critical evaluation of what the facts are instead of what they are fed such as Belicheck stand for integrity in the game of football, ROFL!
