Bill's open

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 4, 2008 11:07 AM

FOXBOROUGH – Patriots coach Bill Belichick opened his Friday press conference (10:45 a.m.) with the following statement:

“A couple of things to start with. I want to acknowledge the Coach of the Year thing yesterday from the AP. It’s certainly an honor, and something I appreciate. I think there are a lot of great coaches in this league. I think there are some guys who have done some fantastic jobs with their team, so it’s really an honor to be selected. At the same time, I think it’s much more of a team award than an individual award based on the success of our team and the players and what they’ve done. Certainly the assistant coaches, they’re the ones that do most of the coaching and most of the preparation. I think they deserve a lot more credit for that than I do but it is certainly an honor to be recognized like that. But I think most of the credit needs to go to the players and the team for winning and for the assistant coaches and the job they did.

“As far as the situation with Josh [McDaniels] goes, I think he’s said what he has to say about it. I really wouldn’t have a whole lot to add to that, other than I think Josh is an outstanding coach, one of the best I’ve worked with. I know he’s young but he’s outstanding, does a great job, and has done in a number of different areas in this organization, and for me personally. I think he has a tremendous future as a coach. As he said, all that is being put aside for right now and we all are focused on our task at hand. We’re all 0-0, right at the bottom with everybody else in the playoffs. So we’re looking forward to trying to get ready to go for our first opponent, and play well next Saturday night. That’s where we’re at.”

BB said that , regarding McDaniels, it is being put aside for RIGHT NOW, which as I interpret it, the door is not shut on McDaniels accepting a job offer AFTER the post season is done.

Thing? Coach of the Year THING?

"Hey Tom Brady, how do you feel about winning that MVP thing? Hey Kevin Garnett, how does it feel to be voted to that All-Star game thing?"

Man, as much as i love and respect the guy, he really doesnt appeal to the common man whatsoever. If i wasnt a die-hard pats fan, i'd probably hate the guy...but i am, so i love him

  1. Let's see...31 years old and being sought for a head coach in the NFL? Despite his age and lack of experience as a head coach, I think McDaniels would command pretty good dollars given the season he just completed leading an offensive juggernaut. He could increase his paycheck ten fold. The door is definitely not shut on this topic.

  1. The National Media went out of it's way? Lay off the crack buddy. BB created that situation for himself.

How does Merriman not get the Def Player of the Year award for cheating and BB's cheating is over looked? Little consistancy would be nice.

    What a joke

  1. NFL owners and GMs would never wait to hire a coach until after the Superbowl if they havent even interviewed the guy yet. In terms of Crennel with the Browns, they had interviewed and already decided he was the coach, just didnt officially announce it until after the Superbowl.

  1. Firstly, I'd like to say to BB and the rest of coaching staff...OUTSTANDING JOB!!! After being labeled cheats, and hounded all year and having to deal with an unfair taint on PAST accomplishments you, as a group, have done an exceptional job of not only keeping things together, but rising to perfection! And as has been said in the past it all starts at the top. I can now say, without guilt or consideration for the past greats, that Bill Belichick is the greatest coach of all time...if they win the Superbowl.

  1. Chance are, Mr. Allen, all open coaching positions will be filled by the time the Super Bowl rolls around, hence this week for Bye-week coaches to interview. If McDaniel were going to take a shot at a HC position, he'd have done it this week. My guess is he wants to be an outstanding coach, long-term-type, and wants a at least one more year under BB.

  1. I gotta think McDaniels will stick around for at least another year or two. Think about it - if he takes a head coaching job and stinks, he'll be labeled as yet another coordinator who can't handle the big dance. Let him get the experience under the best in the game for another few years, then try a top gig somewhere else.

Congratulations, Mr. Belichick, and please stay coaching the Patriots for many years to come. Regarding Josh McDaniel, the time is definitely not right. Anyone hiring him as a head coach now would be sorry and so would Josh. Under Mr. Belichick's continued tutelage, McDaniel might become a great head coach some day. But it would be a big mistake right now, no question about it.

  1. Coach Belichick has built a tradition of winning in New England with hardwork and a Winning Attitude. Despite the losses of key Assistant Coaches, Belichick has found a way to keep the "Team" focused on what each Individual needs to do to keep the team on its winning Track. He will soon be sitting with Red Auerbach as one of the Greatest to build a tradition in New England. Names like Vince Lombardi come to mind when looking for peers to sit with Coach Belichick. Football is unlike Baseball & Basketball because each game bring's much more intensity and preasure. There are so many ways to lose in football, thus making his ability to find Assistants to keep everyone together on the same page more Extraordinary!

    You're a moron.

Bill Belichick was caught videotaping in the first game of the season at halftime. Would you explain to me how that benefited the NE Patriots and should have impacted Belichick receiving the COY thing? Furthermore, absolutely nothing was gained from the videotaping and, as most have said, change your GD defensive signals if you're worried about it.

Merriman got caught taking steroids which impacted his entire year and it was correct him not getting the Defensive Player of the Year.

Bill Belichick is the Coack of the Year and he deserves it. Put that where the sun don't shine you clown.

Actually smart guy, Merriman got voted into the pro bowl and the rules were changed to no longer allow a player that had been reprimanded for performance enhancing substances to be elected to the pro-bowl. If breaking rules is cheating should anyone who has a flag thrown on them be ineligible for honors? The penalty wasn't for taping or for stealing signals. It was for where they taped from. It's okay for the Jets to do it from the end zones with permission apparently.

  1. Somebody asked, how does Shawn Merriman not get the Def Player of the year because of cheating and BB gets coach of the year having cheated. It's rather simple. Shawn Merriman enhanced his performance and BB didn't. BB was the best coach (he is... if you watched him at all, you'd know he is really good.) Objectively, you could say BB could be denied coach of the year in 2006 because he was caught cheating, but he was clean in 2007 (unless you think we won the Jets game because of the camera confiscated in the first half of the first game.

  1. Hey J,

the rule about the pro bowl is that you're ineligible if you're caught using banned substances.

The rule about coach of the year is that you're eligible even if you're caught taping defensive signals.

    Too difficult to understand?

  1. To clarify this question:

"How does Merriman not get the Def Player of the Year award for cheating and BB's cheating is over looked? "

In Merriman's case, the rules state that he IS NOT ELIGIBLE for any such awards.

and how was Belichick's deal "over-looked?"

He was fined $500K. The team paid $250K PLUS the loss of a first-round pick. That's it, because that's the highest penalty the league CAN dole out. The punishment was handed out, and paid.

Sheesh some of you Patriots-haters really need to get over it.

  1. Okay, for all of you who are so quick to say Bill and the Pats are cheaters, let me educate you as to what the situation really is.

First of all, the Pats were caught in the FIRST half of the FIRST game of the year. SO even if they were doing something illegal in that one half, it had no bearing on the rest of the games. They were not "cheating" in games 2-16 and they won them all. And furthermore, they didn't even get to use the tape in game one as it was confiscated at half time. So they weren't even cheating in game one either.

So there you go, 16-0 without cheating. NOW, if you want to talk about whether or not the three superbowl rings were legit, then MAYBE you have an argument, but no one knows for sure if they were taping in those seasons. Did you see them? No. Were they turned in? No. So essentially, what this means is you have no argument, you are lame, and you were probably a spoiled brat who whenever you lost a game as a child claimed that your opponent was cheating and that is why you lost. So go get some counseling, oh and a football IQ, and stop acting like Jay Mariotti.

  1. I think Hoering needs to sober up and lets face the facts:

While coaching the Browns Coach Belichick was caught renting out a condo for his mistriss and having an affair with his wife (and he admitted it), he then proceeded to drive the franchise into the ground and force them to move to Baltimore and change the name, he has burned bridges with his mentor Bill Parcells, and he has also burned bridges with two of his mentees (Eric Mangini and Romeo Crennell), and then was caught spying and loosing the first round draft pic.

Belichick is deffinately no Vince Lombardi......... He is more dirty than my old ladies underwear.......
