Brady: High ankle sprain

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 22, 2008 06:29 PM

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has a high right ankle sprain, according to a league source, which explains why he was wearing a boot during a Monday visit to New York.

The sprain, which is minor, will not jeopardize Brady’s chances of playing in Super Bowl XLII, the source said.

The Boston Herald first reported the ankle sprain in a story on its website earlier today.

On Monday, Brady did not directly answer a question about being hurt during his regular appearance on WEEI’s “Dennis and Callahan” show. When asked if his leg was injured he said:

“There are always kind of bumps and bruises. I’ll be ready for the Super Bowl. I’m not missing this one. I’d have to be on a stretcher to miss this one. There will just be some treatment this week and, like I said, games like this you get a little nicked up but it’s nothing serious.”

  1. You knew it wasn't anything serious. Now if he had left Gisele's place wearing the cast, that would of have been a better story.

  1. Has there been any speculation as to when he sustained the injury? I don't recall a play against SD where he may have rolled it. Was it against JAX and just aggravated against SD?

  1. The Giants want to beat the REAL Patriots and not win by some fluke thing. The public wants to see Manning/Brady.

I hope it's a good game with few penalties.

  1. Not a problem, the way the rest of the team picks up everyone else, they will finish the season off with a fourth ring and like they say if not they will go home and shine the three they already have, along with a 18-0 season, no one else has done that.

  1. Well, it's not like Brady is a scrambling QB, so mobility really isn't a huge issue for him. Snails are faster than a healthy Brady....

  1. What? You mean TMZ and the New York Post blew something out of proportion? Who knew?

  1. Did he do it before the game against the Chargers, maybe that would explain why he stunk. By the 4th quarter maybe he was able to play through the pain.

  1. So why do people see "high ankle sprain" and think it's minor...Hockey star Crosby was just announced out for 6-8 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Now the physical demands of hockey on your ankles vs football can be debated, but high ankle sprain is supposedly worse than a regular sprain. I suspect the source is close, but not quite right in the details....

  1. Brady must have known the media would follow him to NY. He allowed himself to be photographed with the foot cast. His alternative was to stay home and keep a low profile. So why did he do it? Maybe he decided to put the spotlight on himself, to focus the attention on a non-injury which he knew would take center stage, and therefore relieve the pressure on his best receiver, Randy Moss. Now Moss can prepare for the SB without the added burden of answering all the questions he might have faced in Arizona. Another example of Brady"s leadership?

How is it that his appearance in NY attracted so much coverage? Who were the guys driving the Escalade and toting Brady's luggage. Does he have his own posse?

  1. I'm worried about this. This, plus Moss being covered or unable to get open, if Brady can't move around and the running game fizzles, it'll be an unpleasant night.

  1. This can't be accurate. A high ankle sprain takes weeks to recover from. Has to be something far less serious. Maybe twisted?

I just finished watching the NFL Network Replay of the game. I think Tom got hurt on the first sack by Luis Castillo and Shaun Phillips in the second quarter of the game. His body was twisted in a awkward manner and it looked like he fell on his ankle. Hard to tell.

Since he finished the game and looked fine throwing the ball, he should be A-okay for the Super Bowl. Remember, he hurt his ankle in the '01 season a week prior to the Super Bowl against the Rams. How'd that work out for us?

  1. After watching all of his plays multiple times, Jaws said he was hurt early in the first quarter. He's about as good a commentator as it gets. Indeed, you can see Tom not fully planting his right foot on numerous plays afterward.

  1. Absolutely ROY - I hate those darned OATS all I hear about these days are OATS OATS OATS! Sure they reduce cholesterol and I guess Wilford Brimley made a career out of selling them, but enough already.

I do sort of like Tom Brady though.

  1. Add this to Gail Warning's comment -- throughout the game our Pats party commented on TB sitting on the bench with his head down. TOTALLY uncharacteristic of the guy -- even when things aren't going well in other games he's up and into what's happening. We thought he might have had the flu or something. Jaws' analysis and the comments by Mike Lynch on the 11 news tonight seem to confirm that things were not right for most of the SD game. Still have to question the sanity of traveling into the mouth of the beast prior to the SB (with the G-men of all teams) -- that was kinda stupid. But then TB has said his problems are never on the field -- they happen off the field.

  1. Brady has been listed as probable for his right shoulder for years. Is he going to be listed as probable for his shoulder AND ankle from now on?

  1. Exactly, didn't he have a more serious sprain in 2001 right before the Superbowl? Seemed to be fine to me after that. The MY media is grasping for straws and cranking out the billboard material. Good for them.

  1. Before we begin to worry, folks, let's look at the body of work Tom has laid out. He has never let this team down and I am willing to bet Sunday the 3rd of February is not the day he's going to start letting the team down.

Have faith Patriots nation. We owe him that.

  1. No problems for THE GREATEST NFL TEAM EVER! They will finish 19-0 along with all of their great records they made this year. They have too good of a coach not to. No worries.

  1. Litmus test for football fans. If you thought the walking cast was actually an issue outside the people who read People magazine, if you need a caption to know what Randy Moss looks like then you're just being sheep. ;And we get another 10 days of this. Oh goody.
