Double Pop

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 13, 2008 01:12 AM

When Patriots QB Tom Brady connected with WR Wes Welker on a 6-yard touchdown in the third quarter, the play included an element of trickery.

Brady was in the shotgun and he faked as if it was a direct snap to RB Kevin Faulk. While tucking the ball behind him, he raised one arm over his head to create the look of a direct snap to Faulk.

Brady then loaded and fired the strike to Welker.

"I'm looking for my Academy Award on that play," Brady joked in his post-game press conference. "We worked on it the other day, and for the first time we just kind of put it in Friday and thought we had a shot on it. I think they bit on the run pretty hard and Wes did a great job. He's hard to find, 5-foot-7. Just had to drop it over the linebacker and he made a nice play to catch it."

Brady said the play is called "double pop."

  1. That being said, I can hardly wait to see the "triple pop." (lol)
