BRADY FALLS SHORT ON PASSER RATING: The passer rating stat is one of the more complicated stats in the NFL. Consider that Tom Brady finished the season with a passer rating of 117.2, the second best mark in NFL history behind Peyton Manning's 121.1 rating in 2004. Yet when comparing Brady's 2007 stats to Manning's 2004 stats, Brady had more completions, a higher completion percentage, more yards, more touchdowns and fewer interceptions.
TOUCHDOWN TO INTERCEPTION DIFFERENTIAL: Tom Brady finished the season with 50 touchdown passes and eight interceptions, which sets the NFL record for best touchdown-to-interception differential (plus-42). The previous record was held by Colts QB Peyton Manning, who was plus-39 in 2004.
INSIDE VIEW ON PATRIOTS: Former NFL offensive lineman Ross Tucker, who spent some time with the Patriots in 2005 and 2006, details his thoughts on why the franchise is so successful for SI.com.

If those numbers are better than PM's then which of TB's stats caused him to have a lower passer rating?
So why did Brady's passer rating come out lower? I think the passer rating is the most overrated number in the NFL.
Can someone please explain why Brady's QB rating is lower than Manning's from 2004 when he "had more completions, a higher completion percentage, more yards, more touchdowns and fewer interceptions?"
Maybe QB rating takes into account how many commercials (especially these bad ones) you do?
Personally, I blame Bill Polian...he had to have something to do with it...
Peyton had a full yard more per pass attempt then Tom, 9.2 to 8.3. Then again Tom played all his games outdoors and not in a dome. Either way, the two best quarterback seasons in the history of the NFL, in 04 and 07.
It's because Brady also had a lot more attempts. And all the calculations are per attempt.
Manning had better numbers in 2 categories. Brady had 1 more TD in 81 more attempts. He had 249 more yards on 81 more attempts.
Brady had a better completion percentage and 2 less interception on 81 more attempts.
My question is the same, if TB had better stats in all those listed, there seems to be no logical reason for Manning to have a better passer rating.
Did Peyton stomp his feet, whimper a bit, throw his arms out in his "it's not my fault" position and threaten to go home with the football if they didn't put his rating over Bradys.
I'm sure it's because Peyton know how to play the skin flute and Tom doesn't!
While surfing on the Net I found your blog, I stopped at it to have a rest and I explored it. There is interesting stuff displayed. Now I continue my surfing…
Make a stop at my blog, if you wish. Happy new year! Ciao.

Very nice article by Ross Tucker giving an insight to what makes a team so good.
As far as TB vs. PM as the ‘best’ let’s wait for the field to be even. Let Tom have another year or two with the highest quality of receivers that are ‘in-synch’ with him and the debate is over. Payton is one incredible quarterback and as was pointed out did more on fewer attempts. I believe that the ‘best’ is still to come and I absolutely believe it is in Tom Brady Himself! Just imagine a gelled consciousness between all members of one team playing the best the game has ever seen… We in New England have an opportunity to witness just that. The NEP’s have played well this year but there is still more that can be accomplished and I think coach Bill intends to offer that opportunity to Tom and the rest of us.
Support our organization and watch as right before our eyes the New England Patriots go 19-0 as a beta test for next year, because next year EVERY team will bring their ‘A’ game to our beloved team and we will see some of the best football that has ever been or will ever be played.
Mike Reiss,
Thanks for the SI link, it shines a little light into something that fans just never see.
BTW, thanks also for your excellent work reporting on the Patriots. You have become the go-to guy, the "must read" for anyone keeping tabs on the Pats. Your on air analysis is also quite good compared to all of the 'controversy" trolls and chest beaters who like to hear themselves on the radio or get their face on TV.
Your professionalism is much appreciated from this end.
Happy New Year.
I would like to second Rob's thoughts. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't check your blog. Even when i am at work I am able to check your updates on the Boston.com mobile site from my cell.
Thanks for everything and I enjoy reading you live game updates as well.
Happy New Year!
Also, I need to learn to proofread my entries before posting them.
Peyton's completions went for significantly more yards than Tom's.
His pure numbers are genuinely better and he deserves the higher rating.
Of course, the rating does not factor in such things as WHERE the games are played. Both Tom and Peyton have a 16 point higher passer rating when they play indoors. Peyton had 8-9 MORE indoor games than Tom. If you give Tom an 8 point bonus, then he obviously smokes Peyton.
Tom probably needs an additional 2 points because his outdoor games were almost entirely in cold parts of the country. Other than Tom, no outdoor cold weather QB has ever come close to these numbers.
Passer rating is an archaic stat. Unfortunately it won't be changed anytime soon. Wins vs. losses, TDs vs. INTs are far better indications of a QBs effectiveness.
Check out the Top 20 Career Passer Rating Leaders:
1 Steve Young* 96.81
2 Peyton Manning 94.37
3 Kurt Warner 93.77
4 Joe Montana* 92.26
5 Marc Bulger 91.26
6 Daunte Culpepper 90.75
7 Chad Pennington 89.32
8 Tom Brady 88.36
9 Drew Brees 87.54
10 Trent Green 87.48
11 Jeff Garcia 86.43
12 Dan Marino* 86.38
13 Donovan McNabb 85.19
14 Matt Hasselbeck 85.10
15 Brett Favre 85.05
16 Rich Gannon 84.71
17 Brian Griese 84.54
18 Jim Kelly* 84.39
19 Mark Brunell 84.21
20 Jake Delhomme 84.05
Only Steve Young, Joe Montana, Dan Marino and Jim Kelly are HOFers. Brady, Manning and Favre are on their way. I’d rather have Dan Marino, Bret Favre, Jim Kelly, Fran Tarkenton, Terry Bradshaw, Johnny Unitas, Bob Griese, Ken Stabler, Dan Fouts and a few dozen others under center rather than Kurt Warner, Marc Bulger, Trent Green, Chad Pennington et al.
As useless a stat as passer rating is, let’s take pride in the fact that Brady increased his season rating to nearly 20 points over his career rating. Plus there’s the little matter of those records Brady set along the way.
