Osi & Light

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 23, 2008 04:57 PM

HBO's media relations staff passes along the following from this week's Inside the NFL show, in which Giants DE Osi Umenyiora is interviewed and stirs the pot regarding Patriots left tackle Matt Light:

Osi Umenyiora: “It was a good match up the last time. I mean, I think I got him a couple of times, he also got me a couple of times. It was a war out there and to be honest with you, I not quite sure that he thought that he was going to see me again because of some of the things he did and said during that game. But, you know, unfortunately he does have to see me again.”

Bob Costas: “Trash talking is one thing, you seem to be implying that he made some dirty moves. Did something happen outside the pale?”

Osi Umenyiora: “He was doing a couple of things that you know he shouldn’t have been.”

Bob Costas: “Like what?”

Osi Umenyiora: “Hitting after the delay and trying to, I don’t know if he was trying to intimidate me, I don’t know what he was trying to do, but he did a couple of things that he shouldn’t have done and, you know, now we are really going to go at it this time.”

Bob Costas: “Were there angry words?”

Osi Umenyiora: “A couple.”

When asked if the Patriots were a dirty team, Umenyiora said: "I wouldn’t call them a dirty team, I wouldn’t say that. I haven’t really experienced them as a team to be dirty. They have certain individuals like I am sure we have certain individuals who are perceived to be dirty but people wouldn’t call them a dirty team.”

  1. Mike you are awesome, but I have heard ENOUGH from all of these "opposing players. Maybe the Hardwick stuff is getting to me. The NY Giants are the last team to talk about any team being dirty.

  1. Another crybaby complaining about the Patriots. Dude, it's football, it's a rough emotional game... get over it.

  1. Enough of this crap ...

Someone ask USI if he would like to play some touch football instead and then they can eat some cookies and drink some milk after the game.

    Give me a break

  1. Seems like a guy reputedly into coprophilia would be ok with the odd dirty move.

"Unfortunately"? Oh, Osi, Osi... you poor man, don't you understand? If anything, Mr. Light is looking forward to it!

  1. Is this really what passes for bulletin board material these days? Come on. The Pats are really stretching now if they need this to get motivated.

  1. Yeah, I'm getting sick of all the whining by teams that the Patriots beat. It is reminding me of all the excuses I used to hear from drug-addicted felons in a treatment program I worked at. It was never there fault, just like all these NFL players are whining that they weren't really beat by the Patriots. Can you say denial? And to believe them, somehow all these dirty plays are happening without any of the refs seeing it. Maybe someone could get the stats on unsportsmanlike penalties throughout the season and get some numbers to back-up/refute all the whining.

  1. Kind of a "Vanilla" story. I can't see any terrible transgression. Maybe we are becoming just a little too sensative. in anycase I am sure Matt Light is not worried about seeing him again or "Really Going at it" Go Pats lets seal this deal and the dime store pundits can eat dirt.

  1. This is the stupidest thing I have read since articles about the Charger's whining. If he is going to call Light out, then call him out.

  1. Not surprising to hear crap coming from Osi Umenyiora - a man who reportedly pays women to crap on him, and he on them.

  1. Yeah, doesn't everyone know that all the Patriots are clean players who never do anything objectionable like leg whipping (Vrabel) or sticking fingers in peoples helmets or throwing elbows at peoples knees (Wilfork) or diving at peoples knees (Harrison). I just don't understand why people are so unfairly critical of this team!!!

  1. Pretty lame stuff to me. Didn't call the Pats dirty, didn't say anything derogatory about Light's abilities. Certainly Light knew they would eventually meet up again - so what? I wonder what Kaczur did to Stahan last time (it's a joke people)?

  1. Maybe we forget the game of football and what happens in the trenches. It's a no mans land where anything goes as long as you don't get caught. We play to the whistle and sacrifice everything in between. It's funny how we only hear about dirty play from the losing teams. Maybe they should stop blaming others and look inside themselves and see if they have what it takes to man up and play the game.

  1. What more can you say? 1972 Dolphins trying to minimize what the Pats have and will accomplish. Opposing teams on the losing ends trying to tell the world we have dirty players, the refs want us to win, the NFL wants to sell tickets. Players, coaches, fans all dissed the Pats for stealing signals, which any team could be doing by just bringing a camera and sending someone sits on the front row.

It's all because of one thing. Jealous. That's it.
The more they whine, the better I feel.

  1. As Ronald Reagan said to his opponent; "Well I ... I refuse to let my opponent's age and inexperience be a factor."

Besides, isn't this just one more chapter in the conspiracy to make sure that the Pats go 19-0? Every time these bozos make another stupid jab at the Patriots' character, the Pats get all the more motivated to beat their next opponent!

    hahahaha!!!!!!!! We're gonna go 19 - 0 !

  1. I think Osi is just demonstrating his lack of prepping before talking with the press by the Giants coaching staff....and is trying to exhibit bravado by standing up to Matt Light in the press, to try and overcome his feeling of having been beaten in the last game.....
And I don't think the Giants have been well liked as a team in the Boston area since at least the mid-late 60's, and by some like me since the Pats appeared in 1960, with Gino and friends doing battle with teams we had to work hard to learn the names of and learn to dislike.......
I remember the Giants when they were regular guys on a great team in the late-'50's, when they would do things like play the Green Bay Packers in an exhibition game in late-summer on the high school football field in Bangor, Maine, and follow that up with a late-night party at the Fiesta Room at the Bangor House, with Katcavage, Robustelli, Huff, Greer (entertaining with his songs), Conerly, Gifford, and Webster enjoying each other's company........
I know, because I was there at the game and at the Fiesta room, and I haven't seen a Giants team since that matched them for football entertainment until this new group came along this year, and that enjoyed the loyalty of all New England fans like they did until the 1960's..............and that's why I'm now 1960Pats Fan.....

  1. Why does it seem like the NFL, except the Patriots, have turned into a bunch of girls?

As far as videotaping, please. Compared to the things that are done in sports these days (track and field, cycling, Clemens/Bonds, etc.) a videotape seems pretty much like something out of Leave it to Beaver.

As far as the whining 1972 Dolphins, they could care less about football. They are protecting their autograph earnings only. Give me a break. My sons would not even know who Mercury Morris is or care for his autograph. Anyone from the Pats would supercede a Dolphin in their minds.

  1. You know, this stuff gets really old after a while. First it was the media blowing spygate out of all proportion. When that failed to distract the Patriots they moved on to running up the score. When that didn’t work they moved onto the blueprints and the running game. When that didn’t work they moved on to claiming Moss was dogging it. When that didn’t work they moved onto the defense. When that didn’t work they moved onto Moss’s personal life. When that didn’t work they moved onto Brady with boots and flowers and now we are onto the Pats are dirty. I am sick of it! I hope the Pats players are too and they hang 100 on the Giants and give the media the middle finger on the way to pick up the trophy!

  1. Did Light say something nasty or what. Anybody who has played football knows it can get heated, so not sure why he would be crying about this stuff. Im sure light is not shaking in his boots right know neither are the patriots. Everybody wants to take a shot at the Champions. Osi is probably trying to get Light so pumped up he will get an unsportsman like penalty. Keep you cool and show them the trophy after the game is done.

  1. I think every team has players who do things their opponents don't like. Too bad; that's football and questionable play isn't exclusive with the Patriots. I'm a little tired of hearing the constant complaining and bashing of New England's players. And as far as Brady goes, he's not the first unwed father that also happens to be a professional athlete. He's a high profile player that gets an awful lot of attention; some of that attention is positive and some is negative. Anyway, the Pats and Giants will settle their "differences" on the field come February 3rd with a lot of trash talking in between.

    Pats 31 Giants 21

Now lets talk Football. The Pat's are a good team but when it comes to Dirt. Rodney Harrison was voted as the Dirtiest player in the NFL by other players for a reason? Hey they play and should know. As for Matt Light we've all heard things from other teams too so must be true.

  1. It does not matter what is prognosticated leading up to this Super Bowl... The Patriots will play for more glory and history than NFL football has produced up to this point! The individual and team effort will be worth watching.

The Giants are good and they deserve to be in this game, but they should not relegate themselves in history by stooping to comments and quotes that will forever be mentioned when they talk about the '07-'08 Patriots.

  1. Osi,

Keep talkin' sh*t. It motivates the Pats!!

I checked the box score for the Green Bay game. The Giants defense regeistered exactly 0 sacks. If the Packers can stop them, the Pats with their complete starting O-Line will too.

Watch out for Faulk and his chip blocks, he may hurt you.

Go get him Matt. Knock him on his ass!!!

  1. Dude, Umenyiora is a great pass rusher but he doesn't get to the QB by asking nicely....he's a brut, tough physical animal and he should be respected but Matt Light has been equally clincal in protecting his QB without maming, kiliing or shooting anyone...

    Good Job.
    Go Pats.

  1. Ok, 1st off 72 Fins and their fans stop whining about the Pats and there record. The Pats just like the 72 Fins will be considered one of the best teams in NFL history. As for comparing teams from different eras, you can't really do it you can't line them up because they all played different teams and that's what lead to the stats we measure them by. Saying a team had a weak or hard schedule is realtive to that one season. This is just a way Pat haters who are trying to minimalize what they've done. As for video gate. And for the haters who keep pointing out the Pats cheated get you facts straight. 1. They broke a rule (just like a face mask, or a hold or pass interference) only what they did could be flagged on the field. 2. What they did was tape 8 minutes of defensive hand signals that they never watched due to the tapes confinscation ( all teams have people assigned to watch the other teams defensive hand signals). 3. Even if you know what the other team is going to do you still have to execute ( if I knew Randy Moss was going deep down the side line I'd still have to catch and cover him). So stop hating and admire what the Pats have done it's only been done one other time by the 72 Fins. (Yes, Mercury you'll still be one of the best teams and no this doesn't diminish what you and your team did).

  1. As much as I love these Patriots and want to see them go 19-0 I do believe that all teams have at least one player that will cross the competitive line and does things that are dirty such as Vince Wilfork poking an opposing player in the eye. Now whether this is in the heat of the moment or not it easily can give people the perception of a dirty player. As a collective team I do not think they are dirty but as like most things in life it only takes one to spoil it for the others
