Positional groupings

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 14, 2008 08:23 AM

A look at the positional groupings utilized by the Patriots offense in Saturday night's win over the Jaguars:

3 WR/1 TE/1 RB -- 28 of 58 snaps
4 WR/1 RB -- 15 of 58
2 WR/1 TE/1 FB/ 1 RB -- 4 of 58
1 WR/2 TE/ 1 FB/ 1 RB -- 4 of 58
3 TE/1 FB/ 1 RB -- 3 of 58
3 WR/1 FB/1 RB -- 2 of 58
2 WR/2 TE/ 1 RB -- 2 of 58

ANALYSIS: Once again, the Patriots played the majority of the action in spread formations, as 45 of the 58 snaps came with three or four receiver packages on the field. ... The Patriots ran as well as they have all season out of those spread formations, which is a credit to not only the line but also the receivers blocking downfield. ... Three of the four touchdowns came out of the 3 WR/1 TE/1 RB package, with the fourth coming in the short-yardage 3 TE/1 FB/1 RB grouping.

MONDAY PLAN: There is no media access at Gillette Stadium today. We'll plan on filing a special teams update in the early afternoon, taking a closer look at the personnel that comprises some of the units.

  1. Does the 3 WR/1 TE/1 RB count include the 5 wide formation with Evans and Watson split out?
