Super Bowl nugget

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 22, 2008 11:39 AM

Here is one nugget picked up this morning while researching Super Bowl information:

Super Bowl XLII will mark only the second time that two teams met in the final game of the regular season, then met in the Super Bowl, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The other time it happened came in 1977, when the Cowboys and Broncos met in the final week of the regular season, then played each other in Super Bowl XII.

The Cowboys won both contests – 14-6 in the season finale and 27-10 in the Super Bowl. The regular season was 14 weeks that year.

  1. How about the fact that all the Final Four teams had two-word city/regions: New England, San Diego, Green Bay, New York. How many times has that happened?

(I know, who cares, but there's 12 days to kill until the Super Bowl.)

  1. or how about that the Pats finished the preseason by beating the Giants, the regular season by beating the Giants, and the postseason by...who knows, but it might happen?
