Ups & downs

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff January 21, 2008 01:13 AM

A look at who's up and who's down from the Patriots' win over the Chargers in the AFC Championship:

Up

  • Tedy Bruschi -- Linebacker delivers a solid effort, breaking up a pass intended for Antonio Gates in the red-zone, while tying for a team-high with eight tackles.

  • Kevin Faulk -- Running back finishes with a team-high eight catches for 82 yards, including a remarkable diving grab on the final drive of the game.

  • Laurence Maroney -- Running back totals 122 yards on 25 carries (4.9 avg.) with a touchdown.

  • Junior Seau -- Linebacker plays with energy and comes up with a key red-zone stop on third-and-1.

  • Kelley Washington -- Gunner on punt coverage makes an athletic play to down a punt inside the 5, shifting field position and ultimately setting up the Patriots' second score.

  • Tight ends -- Kyle Brady, Benjamin Watson and Stephen Spach team up as part of a 3-tight end package in the second half, which helped establish the running game.

    Down

  • Tom Brady -- Quarterback throws three interceptions in a game for the first time this season.

  • Randy Moss -- Wide receiver finishes with one catch for 18 yards, and one rush for 14 yards, and drops a pass.

  • Donte' Stallworth -- Wide receiver totals two catches for 11 yards and one of Brady's interceptions was thrown in his direction and wasn't handled.

MONDAY PLAN: We'll look at the snaps played by offensive skill position players. Also, coach Bill Belichick is scheduled to hold a 4:45 p.m. press conference at Gillette Stadium.

    1. I disagree with Moss. Even though he only had one catch go back and watch the coverage that he was drawing. Many times Cromartie or someone else went straight to him and would leave Faulk wide open. I think Moss did a great job being a "decoy"

    1. I think Matt Light should be an UP.

He had a great game and Merriman was a non factor.

    1. Also Heath Evans made a couple 3rd down conversions and laid some great blocks for Maroney. All around a great day for the running backs.

Also Moss did good blocking so while he didn't produce stats he wasn't slacking either.

    1. Mike, regarding Brady and the flu, did you hear anything about that? That was the rumor going around in our section during the game and it would make sense since some other players on the team had it this week.
