Belichick at 3
Patriots coach Bill Belichick is scheduled to hold a season wrap-up conference call with the media Tuesday at 3 p.m. EST. The plan will be to post an update after the call.

I would like to know his thoughts on the offensive game plan, the pathetic play calling, especially in the second quarter after the Pats took a 7-3 lead, had two defensive stops that gave the offense the ball back, and McDaniels pathetic play calling on both possessions were three and out. And, it was more of the same in the 3rd quarter. Much like last seasons AFCCG against the Colts, the opponents defensive coordinators made adjustments and McDaniels was way too slow to counter. IMO, this game was lost more so by the ineptness of Josh McDaniels than the offensive line. The O line was put into very bad situations by pee poor play calling that allowed the Giants pass rush to control the flow of the game. The defense did it's job in the first 3 quarters, but McDaniels horrible slowness to change the offensive approach put the Pats in position to lose, not win. I want to hear BB's opinion on that, although I kind of know what to expect, as BB never rips his coaches in public, but this time, it needs to be done.
I'm sure that'll be a thrilling call. Don't waste your time, Mike.
I wonder if he'll say that the result is disappointing.
This should be good...Belichick should change things up a bit and start the press conference with....
"Umm...that was a disappointing loss. We were obviously the better team and we choked. The Giants deserve no credit whatsoever. Brady had a broken bone in his ankle which was the reason we couldnt get a first down if our life depended on it. By the way, we didn't just tape the Rams walkthrough but also stole the playbook out of their office before the game. We have also videotaped every single preseason, regular season, and playoff game since 2000 when I got here. Obviously. Why would I just start taping games this season? And yes, I do hate Eric Mangini."
Ok, any questions?
Arrogance and defiance caused ultimate demise of Pats perfect season. Can we go back to 2001, 2003 and 2004 Champ teams. What is common? Hard hitting, fast and ferocius defence. Long drives of 10-15 plays. Taking at least 2 down for each first down completion. Keeping opposing defenses on field for longer than 10 minutes. Time killing drives. Pats have built a soft team and see the result - Game ending interception in 2005 first round, Game ending interception in 2006 AFC championship game and Game ending heart breaking 4 attempt long pass attempts. What happened to accurate short passign game. Long passes are always risky and unreliable. We do not need Stallworths and Randy Moss for playoff success. We need more Gaffney, Welker, Faulk and Brown. Brady can be accurate only in short passing games. Remember that Dan Marino and Brett Favre failed more because of their long passing first habits. Firget about individual records for Brady and receivers. We need to go back to open receiver and manage the yardage. Pats need to change the game plans on the fly. Be flexible. Bend but do not break. What worked well against pass rushing of Chargers in AFC Championship game could have worked well against Giants also.
Hind sight 20-20!
Mike Allen you are dead-on! The game plan was pathetic but not as pathetic as the coaches inability to adjust on the fly. Where were the draws, draw passes, screens, screen passes, roll-outs, etc etc????? Josh McDaniels and Dante Scarnecchia should be fired. Its 2pm Tuesday and they still aren't fired. If BB can't bring himself to do it then HE should be fired! That was the worst coaching job I've seen in YEARS...check that, since last year when they also CHOKED! I can handle basic losing like 2002 and 2005 but CHOKING ON BAD COACHING in 2006 and 2007 is unforgivable! That thud you hear Jonathan is 30,000 people who can't handle chokers instead of losers dropping their names from the season ticket holder waiting list! This wasn't a loss it was a CHOKE and it is entirely on the coaches. What, the coaches aren't allowed to adjust during the game anymore?? You know, Charlie Weis won 3 superbowls with an offense that had no talent at all. You guys still have his play book, feel free to use it. When the pass rush is not stoppable, you are supposed to turn to the chapter on draws and screens and Kevin Faulk. One of the coaches should quit in disgrace (McDaniels and Scarnecchia are at the top of the list). And the offensive line...if you LOSER CHOKERs show up in Hawaii this week I will VOMIT!!!
I agree with Mike Allen 100%. The three drives immediately after the Hobbs INT showed an extreme lack of imagination in play calling. Wheh Hobbs made that interception, I had feeling that this was the time to jump on the Giants, extend the lead to more than a touchdown, and put tremendous pressure on their offense. Instead, all McDaniels could come up with was two yards and the proverbial cloud of dust? That sequence, and the similar sequence in the 3rd quarter, is where this game was lost.
I'm guessing that this press conference will soften the impression that he left with football fans when he left the game before it was over and had very little to say afterwards. I think he came across as unsportsmanlike and I'm hoping he wants to do the right thing at 3pm.
Top three comments that will be made:
1.) It's a league matter and I can't comment on that.
2.) The Giants made more plays than we did.
3.) It is what it is.
For the record I'm still sick!
Are the Patriots even covering this call? No mention of it on the website. They probably don't want to hear it either.
How gracious do you expect Belichick to be 10min after he lost a game of that magnitude that he knew we could've won? He hugged Tom Coughlin, credited the Giants and is taking a ton of shit. We all know he's not the most genial fellow, and could improve his relations with the media, but to expect it in that circumstance I think is a bit unforgiving. He didn't say the better team lost or not leave without acknowleging Coughlin. He gave a terse interview in one of the toughest moments of his career. I don't blame him.
Again, Mike Allen -100% correct. This is a re-run of pathetic playcalling from last years AFCCG. They should have won big last year, but the play calling in the second half was a joke. This year, you kept waiting from the first possession for adjustments and it didn't come. Giants played great, but main difference was pathetic play calling AGAIN!
1. Three O-line pro-bowlers decided to look ahead to next week pro bowl. Pats O-line looks stone cold and while Giants pass-rush seems like gorilla let loose from captive.
2. What happen to draws, screen passes, 5 wides, no huddle offense? It seemed like long/deep throws were the #1 priority -- recalling Bledsoe days. The Pats' 2nd TD was so a walk-in-the-park and made the Giants pass-rushers gasped for air.
3. Pats' defense play flag football while Giants defense play the real football. Oh come on! 3-4 linemen couldn't sack Manning with that prayer throw and catch.
You guys are hilarious. It took several miracles for the Giants to pull off that win including the most incredible catch in Super Bowl history and you're all ready to hang the coaching staff. If just one of those plays goes the other way you'd be bragging about the greatest team ever. Be rational people. The Giants defensive line played out of their minds. Give them the credit they deserve and move on.
Ken, go back and watch that AFCCG game. The offense did not lose that game. A depleted (and sick) defense did.
The Giants were hungrier than the Pats were. You can cry all day long about adjustments but it showed on the field.
Old Dog, no doubt, defense was bad, but Offense had clock and time and could have bled them to death. Kept having incomplete short 3 and outs and allowed Colts to score ridicluous points because defense was exhausted because the were on the field the entire second half...
Given all the credits to the Giants defensive fronts. One of those guys should have won the MVP and not Manning. But back to the game, if the pass-rushers are aggressive, would the draws and screens play are best to counter them? I didn't see many of those play calling. If the offense had sustained 2-3 long drives, the Giants defensive linemen couldn't be that aggressive throughout the game. Bad day for offense.
In way, I'm glad that they lost. At least the lost put the Spygate to rest. If they had won, the Spygate cra ps would probably be everywhere and every sports stations.
Just remember, 2007 season was defined by the Patriots and one of the best season any sports team can have.
