Bruschi decision could be near

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff February 23, 2008 03:57 PM

INDIANAPOLIS -- Brad Blank, the agent for Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi, said today that Bruschi will make it known soon whether he plans to return for a 13th season.

"He's taking inventory right now -- that's his term," said Blank, who is at the combine. His wife [Heidi] is a part of it and he'll make his intentions known soon."

Bruschi, who turns 35 in June, led the Patriots in tackles last year with 99, according to coaches' film review.

The Patriots have some questions at linebacker as they build toward 2008, as veteran inside linebacker Junior Seau is also a free agent.

The team has the following personnel under contract at linebacker in 2008:

  • Eric Alexander (2008, exclusive rights free agent)
  • Rosevelt Colvin (2008)
  • Larry Izzo (2008, confirmed by agent Drew Rosenhaus)
  • T.J. Slaughter (2008)
  • Pierre Woods (2008, exclusive rights free agent)
  • Mike Vrabel (2009)
  • Oscar Lua (2010)
  • Adalius Thomas (2011)

    1. I would love to see Tedy come back for one more season. It would be great to win one more championship, especially after this season. They were so close, but just didn't get it done. I still think the Pats have to pick up a top LB in the draft, but that is so much more urgent with Bruschi and Seau near or at retirement.

    1. No way Tedi goes out 35 seconds away from immortality. Look forward to seeing #54 holding down the inside while a day 1 draft pick is groomed for replacement

    1. Maybe the Pats can get a linebacker from ASU to replace Tedy, yeah, one of those Scumdevils he referred to while practicing at Sun Devil Stadium before the Super Bowl. The fact that we were unable to get to Eli on blitzes including sending the linebackers, makes you think it's time for Junior and Tedy to head west into the setting sun.

    1. Tedy has been agreat asset to the Patriots family, but he has slowed done a bit. If he would accept a reduced role as a part-time player then yes, it would be nice too have him back. However, is he willing to put in all the off season work too be a part-time player. And the same goes for Junior, is he willing to put in all the work for a reduced role??? Spend the cash on a free agent or two, and see what's available in the draft. Put the helmet on the mantle Tedy and call it a ( GREAT CAREER ) you have 3 Super Bowl rings and many a good memories.

    1. Tedy was a great LB but the Pats cannot hold on to him for another year. You can just see he is getting slower. The Pats however are not too good at dealing with youth or replacing valuable players. They will miss in the draft and miss in free agency. I have the feeling that Tedy's time has come and if something positive does not happen for the Pats their time is over as well.

    1. What are you nuts Bruschi retire , If he isn't the heart and soul of this team. There is no one on that team that relates to so many of us blue collar workers throughout New England.as he does. He is the Steve Grogan of this generation.

    1. Way way too slow these days .. hurt us bad the last 2 years .. leading tackles is misleading because of scheme to protect him .. a young, more athletic LB should make 150 tackles in our system .. plus he cant cover .. great carer but time to move on.

    1. I think one more season is in the cards for Tedy, I don't think he wants to
end his career the way the Pats' season ended in February, on a losing note.
So come on back and play another season and win one more ring!

    1. I would like to see both of them coming back. They both still know how to play the game and they would be great mentors for the younger players when they get drafted. It feels like unfinished business and to come so close to the Super Bowl. I feel the right move or two can get them back and this time they will prevail. Really makes you apprciate the 3 super bowls the Pats previously won. That feeling of losing last year to the Colts was tough and overcoming the AFC championshiop this year. But then to lose i the Super Bowl to the Giants leaves a bitter taste. That one hurt! I really feel that they will win next year and both can retire as winners. Perhaps a biased opinion but it's also no far out of reach for them!

    1. "Pats Fan #14" makes a intriguing point that, "a young athletic linebacker in our system should make 150 tackles." Well...we had that person in our sights and chose instead Brandon Merriweather!!! I suspected last April we were in trouble when we passed on David Harris, and cut it too closely on the depth chart LB.
When Colvin went on IR that slow inexorable slide began. Meantime, we got to watch young Brandon fail to deliver on play after play throughout the season, whilst all the DBs selected before and after him acquitted themselves well. If there is a lesson to be learned from this and other wasted picks( e.g. C. Jackson, et. al.) it is that when you ,"know the cost of everything and the value of nothing", you invariably make mistakes. Oh how David Harris would have flourished being mentored by Tedi & Junior!

    1. Would BB have someone take up a valuable place on the roster in the primary role of 'mentor'? im not sure about that.
if he came back it would only be in a part time role, surely.
A great career though, no one can take that from him.

    1. I think Tedy should retire from playing and pull a Don Davis-like move by coming back as a coach. His value to the team is more in his knowledge than his playing ability.
