Salary cap check
The salary cap status of teams is fluid, as one player transaction can change things in an instant.
But as of today, when accounting for the top 51 Patriots players under contract for 2008, the Patriots have $8.365 million in space under the $116 million cap.
That currently ranks 25th out of the league's 32 teams.
So while the Patriots will have space to make personnel moves -- and will likely create additional space with a few player moves -- the upcoming offseason doesn't appear as if it will resemble what happened last year when the team had an abundance of room and jumped out of the gate early to sign Adalius Thomas.

How does that number compare against last year at this time?
It is now clear that The New England Asterisks and Bill Belicheat cannot win a SB without resorting to cheating. As such, their past SB "victories" are tainted.
Who are we not counting of the 53? Also, what will the differences be when we ask Stallworth to pack his stuff, and whatever we hopefully pay Randy? I am also guessing that there is no way Samuels number is included in the 51?
Franchise Moss and see if a long - term deal can be worked out in the next few months...
Asante Samuel is up in the air. He wants that 'blockbuster' deal.
Cut Donte Stallworth ... Just too pricey with him being owed an 8 million bonus unless it can somehow be deferred which will not happen
Sign Jabar Gaffney to a tender offer IF he is a restricted free agent. Something a little similar to what Randall Gay recieved last year. IF he is unrestricted see if you can get him somewhere in the 1.5-2.5 mill range.
Chad Jackson is going to play a big role nest year. He had this year to learn unders Moss, etc.
Roesvelt Colvin ... he is also up in the air ... has a huge cap hit next year
Remember, Its "gonna take alot" to sign Assante Samuel, a guy who couldnt pick off an easy lob pass to seal the Superbowl on the last drive.
come on Mike, I need some good news. It's been a tough week.
They need to let Asante walk. Unless he can cover the other teams best receiver on an island all day, he isn't worth the money. The only CB that was worth that money was Ty Law.
I'm more concerned about the #7 draft pick. The rookie salary scale is out of whack. It has no bearing on what position the player plays, but rather the position he is drafted. This year, the #7 pick is likely to demand more than Adrian Peterson got last year at #7 ($40.5M/5yr, $17M guaranteed). What can the Patriots do without messing up their salary/value structure? Tom Brady averages $10M/yr and Richard Seymour averages $9M/yr. What rookie and position could they pay nearly $9M/yr to?
I'm sure Matt is right. BB was up in the air on the Samuel decision until he reviewed that "lob pass" from the Super Bowl.
No way we pay Asante the kind of $$ he wants. Colvin will restructure and be back. Moss will be back one way or another. Gaffney will be back. Stallworth won't be, unless no one else is willing to pay, in which he could restructure and be back. I'm sure BB is looking at Seymour's cap # and considering options because he wasn't worth that kind of money this year, but he may be more healthy and back to form next year. What I wonder is if we for some reason stay at #7 and Ellis is there, if that would affect the thinking on Seymour. Just a thought. Go Pats!
