Franchise tag numbers

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 7, 2008 07:46 AM

Today marks the first day that NFL teams can place the franchise tag on players. Each team can use the franchise tag just once.

A look at the tag figure at each position:

Cornerback: $9.46 million
Defensive end: $8.8m
Defensive tackle: $6.3m
Linebacker: $8.06m
Offensive line: $7.45m
Kicker: $2.51m
Quarterback: $10.7m
Running back: $6.53m
Safety: $4.39m
Tight end: $4.52m
Wide receiver: $7.84m

The Patriots have 13 players scheduled for unrestricted free agency. The team can not place the tag on CB Asante Samuel, meaning the next likely candidate would be WR Randy Moss.

  1. If we decide to not franchise Moss, who would be the next most likely? Is there anyone?

  1. This is unrelated to the article but let me just say - the jinx was my fault, I take full responsibility... I let up on my OCD during the game and I can't remember how it happened. I am supposed to STAND on my hardwood floor facing the TV with each foot touching 3 (three) slats of wood (no more no less). Also, I didn't take 3 swigs of my beverage before the snap of every play (I think the last one comes down to the final Giants drive - I remember being slighly distracted with whatever was going on in the room). I'm so disappointed in myself. I am just now getting over the hangover, and trying to replay the whole thing in my head, I'm still convinced this is all a bad dream!! I need help, call a doctor!!!

  1. I recorded the replay of SB 42 last night on The NFL Network but cannot bring myself review the game film, the anguish has not passed ,perhaps by draft day and the seventh pick provides new optimism. The game plan should be to Franchise Tag Moss for $7.84m to secure his services and then establish a contract agreement to maintain the happiness he exhibited during 2007. Secondly, sign Samuel for the going rate of $9.46 million and necessary bonus. They can find room for these two stars with the expanding salary cap. It is not necessary to rebuild an 16 and 0 team, a few normal course adjustments should provide a path back to SB43 and victory.

  1. I can't believe that a corner's tag is higher than a wide receiver. Hell, you could switch a corner to safety and then franchise him for half price. Rumors were that the Pats wanted to bring back Ty Law to be a safety. However when you see the difference in price, now you understand why they don't want to switch.
