Gay to test free agency

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 28, 2008 01:07 PM

The Patriots and CB Randall Gay have exchanged contract proposals leading into free agency, but it has been decided at this time that Gay will test free agency, his agent Albert Elias said today.

Gay has stated throughout the process that his wishes are to remain in New England, but at this time, the sides remain apart in negotiations. Elias said the sides will continue to talk.

  1. how come there is nothing posted about ty laws comments during the celtics game yesterday? this would be big news as i think that ty law is has and always will be a much better shut down corner than assante samuel will ever be! i was hoping to read more about the comments he made about his short list of contenders he would play for and that he would love to come back and play here! maybe you could get some rumors or info from the pats organization about if there will be any talks with him!

  1. This is bad news... i think our starter CBs will consist of all draft picks and hobbs... Please pick Vernon at 7th though... dont pick CB at 7th

  1. You can have him...that's exactly what the Fins need...a coner with average speed and terrible ball tracking abilities.

  1. he's a nickel or dime back at best... after watching years of Patriots football, when are you guys going to realize that it's more about the system than the player.

  1. I don't know, Bob. Gay is pretty fast. Certainly faster than Samuel. And I think he has good ball skills. I don't think he's terribly quick at anticipating and reacting to routes though. But even so, there are far worse corners out there than Randall Gay. I hope they resign him, but I'm not very optimistic. The CB market isn't all that deep this year.

  1. Ty Law looks like he's grown an extra chin, from what I saw watching the Celtics last night.

  1. Maybe the reason for no post on what Law said is cause he didnt say much. No rumours Please! Watch ESPN if you want a story with no legs.
Whats the cost for a deer in the headlights nickleback these days? If Hobbs is that bad that makes your coach a dumb### for not sitting him . Make a choice? Which is it. Def.cord.said it was not Hobbs man to cover a lot of the time. Maybe it looked like Hobbs was out of position because it wasnt his man to cover. I say move up and take Vernon instead of taking abunch of people that will get cut anyway

  1. gay can go away. all these mediocre players the patriots have made decent will move away and turn into nobodies and where are they nows. let them go. next year is going to be crazy. coming off the worst loss of their lives with a defense about to get a major overhaul. as long as b & b still are in it to win it we'll compete.

  1. Why are we willing to commit $15M in guaranteed money to a corner at the 7th pick but not $20M to Assante?

  1. Gay is another player with below average skills who gets hurt all of the time and is nothing more than a backup or nickle. If he wants more, good luck to him in getting it. For his sake, maybe he'll get overpaid like David Givens.

As for Law, he always gets himself in shape for football season and would be a huge upgrade from Gay.

  1. I agree with Bones. How many, so called great players ' have we seen head out for GREENER pastures only to land on the 'where are they now ' list? It's the system that makes these players stand out. If they don't want to stay, let 'em go. To be honest, I forgot Ty Law was still playing football until KC cut him. Other names that have disappeared fast are Banta Cane, Givens, Branch,....the list goes on and on...buh bye! Let 'em go!

  1. As for TY Law . . . he makes the same comments every year. He keeps his options and his WALLET open.

  1. I agree with many of the posters, its the system and Belichek. Let Gay go and he'll end up on the scrap heap. David Givens was just released! Leave it to Belichek to find replacements, maybe a blend of young and experienced.

  1. The Pats entire defense, not just the secondary, is going to hit the skids next year, there are no two ways about it, and for that reason, and a few others, the team is going have a lousy year. One has to wonder if some of the recently departed players are only too happy to move on because they sense that the good shop Belichick is about to hit very rough seas. With each passing day, the dynasty, such as it was, appears to have exhausted itself this past season. It was nice being special, prepare to be ordinary or worse.

  1. Terrell last years offense was ordinary or worse. But the coach and Tom got us to to AFC game where the defense could not produce. Kind of like this year when you think about it
