Offensive participation

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 4, 2008 04:13 PM

A look at the snaps played by Patriots offensive skill position players in Super Bowl XLII:

QB Tom Brady -- 70 of 70
WR Randy Moss -- 67 of 70
TE Benjamin Watson -- 57 of 70
WR Wes Welker -- 53 of 70
RB Kevin Faulk -- 36 of 70
WR Jabar Gaffney -- 35 of 70
RB Laurence Maroney -- 34 of 70
TE Kyle Brady -- 32 of 70
WR Donte' Stallworth -- 25 of 70
FB Heath Evans -- 7 of 70
TE/LB Mike Vrabel -- 3 of 70

(snaps include the first-quarter play in which Benjamin Watson drew a pass interference penalty in the end zone)

ANALYSIS: One of the more disappointing aspects was the production-per-play from TE Benjamin Watson (0 catches in 57 snaps) and WR Jabar Gaffney (0 catches in 35 snaps). Part of that was the Giants' pressure paralyzing the team's passing game. ... Welker's effort is that much more impressive when considering he had a catch on one of every five snaps he was on the field.

  1. Don't forget Watson was the one that had the pass interference call against his defender on the go ahead TD drive, gave them 1 and goal at the goal line.

How many times did they go 5 wide, I don't remember seeing it all night?

  1. 3 WR/1 TE/1 RB package

Seemed (to me at least) like Watson was in a lot in that package, when you need the TE to block, I want to know why it wasn't KBrady.

For all the TDs Watson catches, he is a major bust in between the 20's where his hybrid skills should have allowed him to be a much better player.

  1. Mike
Why did the Pats bury Stallworth in favor of Gaffney? Weren't we supposed to attach the slow Giants safeties with our speed?
