Pats & Smith hook up

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 25, 2008 03:20 PM

INDIANAPOLIS -- Oklahoma defensive back Reggie Smith just met with reporters here at the combine and noted that he sat down with Patriots officials for an interview last night.

Defensive back figures to be a target for the Patriots this year, with Asante Samuel, Randall Gay, Eugene Wilson and Chad Scott all scheduled for unrestricted free agency.

Smith said part of what he discussed with the Patriots was his position flexibility, possibly switching between corner and safety. He enters the draft following his junior season and is one of the sturdier defensive backs in the draft. Smith is also coming off a toe injury, so teams have had questions about that as well.

  1. I think they take him in the first round(7th or if they trade down).....versatile, athletic, good vs the run and in zone or man coverage, a leader........def patriot type player.
