Samuel to visit Eagles

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff February 29, 2008 01:27 AM

CB Asante Samuel is scheduled to visit the Eagles on Friday, according to FoxSports.com. It looks like it will be Samuel's only visit, with the sides close to striking a six-year deal that could be worth a maximum of $60 million if Samuel reaches all his incentives.

As of Friday morning, the Eagles are confirming the visit.

  1. And this is done before the Feb 29, midnight deadline huh? And they call the Pats cheaters! Why arent they being fined and having a draft choice taken from them? After all, what everyone says is ~ cheating is cheating!

  1. Oh well ... it begins now ... the defense needs to be fixed and losing him hurts. Hopefully they pick up Law or someone that can be a threat on that side until Hobbs can show he can cover.

  1. Does anyone else think this is much different than 10 years, $100 million? At these numbers, why not sign him and Moss? With Clovin, Stallworth gone, you have a good amount of cap room. I can't believe no one else in the league is going to top this deal.

  1. I think Arlen Specter should look into the possible tampering violation, as it was reported that an agreement was reached yesterday, when teams were not allowed to talk to free agents from another team. Tampering would provide a competitive advantage for one team and we as a country have a right to watch a fair and balanced sport....... oh wait, scratch that, it's the Philadelphia Eagles. Never mind.

  1. If he does sign with Philly that would be really disheartening. It really is a shame that the Patriots let his contract situation get this far. One of these days the Patriots stingy ways has to catch up with them, Doesn't it?

  1. Have fun Asante! The Eagles will be lucky to be a game or two over 500, and the playoffs are pretty close to a pipe dream.

Just add him to the list of players that leave the Patriots system to go to a mediocre team for big money. How's it working out for Branch, Givens, Graham, Woody,
    etc... ?

Thanks for your services, I sure wish you could of hung on to the football a few weeks ago.

He got tired of the negative rap in NE. You NE fans are really desperate to get this cheater thing deflected onto someone else. Admit it....your coach is a cheater and your dynasty is tainted with a big asterick! Reminds me of Bonds.

  1. Eagles fans should be careful what they wish for - no Patriot free-agent has ever left the Pats and go on to great success. The production of many complete drops off upon leaving here. See David Givens, Damien Woody, Deion Branch, Ty Law, Willie McGinest, Lawyer Milloy. Asante might be an exception, but he likely will be quite a bit more exposed in a different defensive system.

Patriots have shown they know how to manage the cap and they are not going to spend above a certain number for players at each position.

Regarding Iggles fans who can't spell and take Patriots comments about premature negotiations as whining - football's "Law and Order" commissioner sought to punish the Patriots for a practice that many teams have historically engaged in. And yet when there are clear signs of tampering with players in violation of league rules, the same commissioner is absolutely silent.

Each year it seems tampering becomes more and more flagrant. It would seem that Goodell has a strong case to punish teams who announce deals in the first hours of free agency, in order to reduce a growing problem.

  1. Asante is a very good corner who had a great year in 2006. Last year he was good, but hardly the best in the game. While I think his stats look good on paper, as mentioned above, he gambles and looks great when it plays out, but he looks bad often too. He's not a true shut down corner. The Pats defense is better with him, but paying him what he wanted would have taken money away from other guys.

Taping has no impact on that game, it's used for future games! I'm so sick of all you loser fans complaining about the Pats, you know absolutely nothing about football! When your the best team in football, everybody hates you and wants to see you fall. Take Asante- you can have him, do you honestly think he'll impact your half ass team?! 1. I had the misfortune of living in Philly for a while. Make no mistake, they are the worst fans in the world. Their reputation is well deserved. They are the biggest group of whiners and excuse makers out there. They honestly believe that their little run of NFC championship games compares to what the Pats have done. People who live there pretty much never leave and therefore have no perspective outside of what their sports radio station ,WIP, tells them. I also wonder why so many Eagles fans are on boston.com? It would never even cross mind to go to the Inquirer website. My Philly friends tell me that the WIP radio hosts also spend a disproportionate amount of time talking about Boston. it seems pretty clear to me that Philly is obsessed with Boston, while Philly is dirt on our shoulder. Go choke on a cheesesteak! (patientaly waiting for the invevitable thoughtful and creative response that "you guys cheated****!!!" must be that Temple education). what a bunch of losers.

He was beat countless times and is a shell of himself ask Broncos fans. Asante is young talented and has not even hit his prime the pats FA let go Milloy, Givens, Mcginest, had bad circumstances or were very Old and they were not as highly viewed as Asante shame on Seattle for giving a First round pick for a average No 1. receiver Branch is more of a number 2 guy.
Law actually led the NFL in INT's and had a pro bowl season with NYJ so he was pretty good I think I Asante was staying all you Pats fans would be singing a way

  1. Dear loserville,

you may find the reason that a few Eagles fans are here today is that there is a story here regarding the Eagles.

Further, if you wish to criticise the education of others, you may find it beneficial to,

    a. provide a more 'thoughtful and creative summation than "Go choke on a cheesesteak!" and

    b. learn appropriate use of punctuation and capitalisation.

Finally, in no way would I or any other Eagles fan wish our 'little run of NFC Championship games' to be compared with what the Patriots did - cheating.

You're welcome in advance for the advice and guidance.

  1. Do ANY of you Eagle fans realize your weak-minded hypocrisy when you are lauding the arrival of a high-priced free agent from a team whom you in the next breath label as 'tainted' and 'cheaters'? Just admit you have nothing else to hang your hat on since the Patriots took your team's best shot and it wasn't enough. You'll be booing Asante out of town just like you do with every acquisition once the novelty wears off and he actually makes a mistake. We went through this same process with Curtis Martin, Lawyer, Ty Law, Givens, Branch, Willie, Andruzzi, Daniel Graham, etc. It's worked out OK so far. Don't worry about us New Englanders down in Philly, just rein in your pathetic Senator and tell him to STOP SPENDING MY TAX MONEY ON A PRIVATE BUSINESS' INTERNAL MATTERS and take care of the life and death PUBLIC matters he was placed in office to deal with.

  1. Don't mind the Iggles Trolls.. Just remember who they are and why they lost to us: Donovan McNabb choking on his own vomit, Freddie Mitchell couldn't freaking catch a cold.. to name a few.

Don't dignify these Trolls with anymore responses. Pats are the real deal, that's why the rest of the NFL emulates every move they make. 18-1 is not so bad. 19-0 would have been better, but it was still a HECK of a lot better than what the Iggles did this year.

To the real Iggles fans (notice I did not say Trolls): Asante is a good player, we will miss him, and wish you guys the best. He will make spectacular plays and some bad ones with it, but I think it was a good pickup for you guys.

    Cheers

You have your World Series (2), you have your Dynasty Celtic Championships, and you have your Super Bowls (3) and you're still not satisfied, give Philly a break. Boston truned into something they hate the most, you're all pompous New Yorkers. Buying World Series just like the Yankees and still whining! You're bashing a guy that gave you 2 Super Bowls and we still HAVE ZERO. You never went through more heart ache then Philly. While you were complaining about the Sox not winning the World seires for 80 plus years, the Pats were winning 3 Super Bowls and going to a total of 5, The Celtics owned the NBA with 16 championships, and the Bruins won 5 Stanley Cups! Philadelphia on the other hand - Phillies won 1 World Series in their 120 plus year existence, Eagles never won a Super Bowl and last time they won a NFL championshhip was in 1960 (3 champioships total), Flyers got only 2 cups, and Sixers just 3 champioships! Stop being pigs Boston!

  1. "I had the misfortune of living in Philly for a while. Make no mistake, they are the worst fans in the world. Their reputation is well deserved."

Actually, the reputation is largely a stereotype based off of two to three well-publicized events (Santa, snowballs at Jimmy Johnson, McNabb draft) that are rehashed endlessly by Fox and ESPN because their commentators rely on pre-fab templates to make better stories. Easily influenced dopes then believe that the few are representative of the whole. Those same dopes likely disregard similar humiliating examples of bad behavior provided by their own fans. My guess is you didn't live in Philly at all but are just using that line as a way to appeal to a false authority. "I lived there. I know."

"They are the biggest group of whiners and excuse makers out there." By what measure? Take any group of diehards, and you'll find the same thing. How many people whined about Buckner, Dent, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

"They honestly believe that their little run of NFC championship games compares to what the Pats have done. "
Actually, nobody thinks that. Or very few do. The front office of the Philadelphia Eagles may think this. That's a reason why many Eagles fans are frustrated with the front office because the fans are tired of close-but-no-cigar.

"I also wonder why so many Eagles fans are on boston.com? It would never even cross mind to go to the Inquirer website. "
Congrats. I'm very proud of ya.

"My Philly friends tell me that the WIP radio hosts also spend a disproportionate amount of time talking about Boston. "
The hosts there spend most of their time tearing into the local teams or talking down to the callers. Why would you even have a Philly friend anyway if he is such dirt? Fans here hate NY way more than Boston and when it comes to football, the Cowboys and their local frontrunning "fans" are our worst enemies.

"Go choke on a cheesesteak! " Why do we get made fun of for cheesesteaks? Cheesesteaks taste good. Better than chowder, which, with its consistency and color, resembles what exactly?

"patientaly waiting for the invevitable thoughtful and creative response that "you guys cheated****!!!"
You guys didn't cheat. Your genius coach did. You, like the amoral baseball fans of San Francisco, will readily sell your souls to defend a cheater. But that would also happen everywhere.

Anyway, way to go with the Big Dig! What's worse? Spending ten million per year on an overrated corner or spending billions on murderous new infrastructure?

Boston and Philly are two cities overshadowed by New York. The difference between the two is that Boston thinks it's better while Philly knows it's worse.

    I prefer honesty to self-delusion.

    Glosta,

Where is the hypocrisy? These are two separate things. You can call the team, mostly the coach, a cheater because of SpyGate while still understanding the positive impact of signing a talented free agent. One really has nothing to do with the other. It's called discernment.

  1. CompulsiveCollector,

The reactions here are pretty mixed about Samuel.
    1. Because many of us realize there is a difference between the cover 2 and man press coverage.
    2. Because we actually want a D-lineman who can consistently pressure the QB, such as--I don't know--Osi Umenyiora. You familiar with him? We are. Or we want a wide receiver who can break through press coverage and make a play after the catch. After that we want a return guy, a safety, a young offensive tackle, maybe a veteran at linebacker.
    3. We will get more excited about Samuel if they move Lito for one of the above needs or a good draft pick or two.

  1. Everyone has to relax about Samuel going to the Eagles.

Hes a good player, but definitely not worth 10 million a year IMO. You do not need to have a great secondary to have a great D. Everything starts with your D-line and builds out. The Pats D-line is solid. Belichick and Pioli's efforts should be in addressing the LB situation.

Look at Denver...they have Bailey and Bly as their starting CB, doesnt get much better than that. Their team D was hurting.

Look at the Giants...their D-line is amongst the best in the league and their secondary was average yet they are SB champs.

No reason to panic. Maybe this move does open it up for the Patriots to work out a deal with the Eagles for Lito. Either way i think they have a plan on how to address the defense and make it better.

  1. Nice move Philly - 10M a year for a guy who isn't as good as Sheppard. Best of luck on your upcoming 7-9 season.

  1. What can I do about the Pats organization that doesn't think he's worth mini 6 yr/60 million & max 10 yr/100 million? That's their decision, not us. For me, he dropped potential game ending interception to seal their 4th SB. Let him go whatever he wanted. He'll follow the curse of former Pats players that are not doing well for other teams.

  1. To Dave,

I agree with your comments whole heartedly regarding the loser Senator from PA (Arlen Sphincter). If it's true that they had a deal in place prior to today then they are in violation of tampering rules which should cost them a draft choice as well. Unfortunately the NFL backs the remaining 31 teams and not the Patriots so this will be allowed.

  1. Hey Ted, Comment 60...

Are you awake???????? The Patriots can't make a deal for Lito Sheppard, Samuel is a FREE AGENT, again, FREE AGENT, do you know what that means dopey? Stop trying to make sense.

Eagles want Samuel, then trade Lito to the CARDINALS, not the PATRIOTS, for Larry Fitzgerald.

Amazing. The Pats have 3 SBs, and their fans can still manage to make themselves victims.

You got the gift of the Tuck Rule and an idiot Panther's kickoff out of bounds. Quit whining about Bill being called on his camera work.

  1. Boston is just mad because we got Asante Samuel and all they got is crappy Samuel Adams!!! That beer sucks and so do the Pats, bunch of cheaters...I just have a question...do the Patriots collect all of their jackass coach's sweatshirt sleeves and send them to shelters as clothing for the poor?

The Birds are now going to trade Lito to the Cards for Fitzgerald and we once again have promise, where the Pats just have the dim future of sucking for the next five years...maybe Brady can go do some more Stetson ads now that his free time will be greatly increased

You guys in NE kill me...you used to be the lovable losers and now that your football team and baseball team have won some titles in recnet times, you invented the games...give me a break...it wasn't that long ago, nobody gave a crap about the Pats...funny how convenient it is for you to love them now.

Well, gotta run, Kevin Faulk is coming through with a fresh bag of buds for all us Eagles fans to celebrate with.

    FLY EAGLES FLY!!!

  1. What about tampering at the pro bowl? Players have always talked to free agent players about coming to their team. Is that not tampering? You tell me. As far as the pats dynasty is concerned, we all know that not one other team in the league can do what they do in order to build a dynasty. I am a supporter of our troops in Iraq, but we have congressmen more concerned about a football game or video taping a game, or worring about HGH in baseball. The congressmen need to stick to Iraq, after all thats why we have commissioners. What do you think?

  1. the eagles lost the superbowl because donavon mc nabb couldn't run a 2 minute offense. freddie mitchell had to call the plays on that last drive. freddie admitted that in an interview after the superbowl and TO latter verified it. i remember watching the game at a bar in west philly and everyone screaming for donavan to hurry up. the stands were already up in front of the art museum, hurry up donavan. as far as assante goes i wish him the best cause he helped the patriots win 2 superbowls

  1. oh one more thing while i do wish assante would of caught that ball at the end of game, that one moment shouldn't define his career. but i would of been nice 4 sb. the patriots would be hanging in the neighborhood of the niners steelers and cowboys. now before u start pats cheated like many dumb fans google wfan and jimmy johnson and read that interview. he won 2 sb while trashing the eagles.he admitts to stealing signals. niners they violated the salary cap. chuck noll also said all teams did it back then

  1. haha you patriots fans are ridiculous, hey the eagles are mediocre? come tell me that at the end of the year when we have a better record than the patriots. You seen the Eagles have this thing called potential and youth, their defense is now almost completely rebuilt when your FO is going to need to start putting walking canes in each locker for your defensive players. Get real, leaving a championship team? haha he realized you guys are no longer going to do anything, you will not be the favorite on ANYONES list except your own this coming season. The patriots are done, book it. Too old, losing too many players. You're essentially losing the youth on your defense, hey i hear seau needs surgery on both shoulders, lmao yeah man the guy needs to know when to retire he isn't winning shit with the patriots anymore. Tom

  1. I am a Pats fan living in Philly and every single Eagles fan on here would give their left arm, cut hoodie sleeves and all to have Bellichick in your corner. The only thing consistent about EAGLES fans is now disappointed you are each year. Potential and Youth? Give me a break. Your franchise Quarterback is what exactly? You will be lucky if he's not playing with Baltimore or Chicago next season. Nobody cares about The Iggles. You are not even the 4th best team in the Conference.
Faulk may be bringing the bud for you guys but Andy's sons have some great Meth and H. It sounds like most of you need a shot of that.

  1. Hey Mike, comment 67.

Where in my comment did i say that the Pats should trade Samuel for Sheppard. I know that at any point during this offseason the Pats did NOT have rights to Samuel and could NOT trade him. Just heard the rumor about Philly's intentions to try to get Fitzgerald. But a couple of weeks ago the Pats had inquired about the availability of Sheppard. So maybe the possibility of working something out was there.
