Zach Thomas to visit Pats
Free-agent linebacker Zach Thomas, who was released by the Dolphins last Thursday, is scheduled to visit with Patriots officials at Gillette Stadium on Monday.
The 34-year-old Thomas has played his entire 12-year career with Miami. A seven-time Pro Bowler, he was limited to just five games last season due to concussions and migraines.
The Dolphins are undergoing a rebuilding project under executive vice president of football operations Bill Parcells, general manager Jeff Ireland and head coach Tony Sparano, and with Thomas scheduled to make $5.65 million in 2008, that factored into the team’s decision to release him.
The 5-foot-11, 228-pound Thomas would project as a middle linebacker in the Patriots’ 3-4 alignment.
The NFL Network reported that Thomas has a visit to the Saints scheduled for tomorrow, while the Cowboys, Jets and Bills are also interested in meeting with him.

Yea!!! Bill finally spoke up! Gosh, what he said made sense...what a concept! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm waiting for all of the naysayers, but I am glad that he at least told his side and his reasons. And for all of the folks that say he didn't take responsibility for his actions, well, now he did.
RE Zach...I'm afraid that the concussions and migraines are showing a little too much wear over the years. We don't need another Ted Johnson in waiting. I bet his motor is still strong, but the head injury factor makes the risk too big.
thomas can not play in a 3-4
thomas did play in a 3-4 in miami. miami switched back and forth between a 4-3 and a 3-4 the last two years.
This is stupid, why even bother talking to him when he blows playing in the 3-4, he is small and would get eaten alive. He is a hall of famer based on playing in a 4-3 when he doesn't need to take on o-line men.
We need to draft one of the mammoth 3-4 MLB in the draft like Jonathan Goff or Beau Bell. People are all excited over the possibility of drafting Keith River or Dan Connor too, but they are small 4-3 linebackers as well. Google what Mike Reiss wrote about Lance Briggs last year, some players just do not fit into the 3-4 scheme.
I'm confused as to why Thomas supposedly can't play in the 3-4? Havn't Miami been running a hybrid defensive system the past few years with Thomas in the heart of it?
Why can't Thomas play the 3-4? Is his build that much different than Bruschi's?
"5-foot-11, 228-pound"
That's why he can't play the 3-4. Maybe when Miami was switching back and forth from 4-3 to 3-4 is how he got all those concussions. 228 lb linebackers aren't built to take on linebackers consistently.
Even Teddy hasn't looked all that good in the 3-4. It could be because of the stroke though. Our 3-4 linebackers need frames like Vrabel and Adalius. Big boys. I would say Zach Thomas has the smarts to play in our system but at his size, IR is a play or two away.
You pathetic patriot fans! He's played in a 3-4 and a 4-3!!! You don't know jack about the dude. All you have to worry about is his noggin... he's had countless concussions in Miami.
BUT... if he remains healthy he can tackle and blitz like no other LB in the league!
PS... PATRIOTS BLOW COCKY POO!!! 18-1 losers!
GO MIAMI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course Thomas can play in a 3-4! Thomas may not be big but he is tough as nails, fast and very strong. He very solid at 5'11" and 228, a 7 time all pro and is Miami's perennial leading tackler! He reminds me of Wes Welker - another fellow Texan that all the geniuses said was too small and who they said would be killed when hit by big linebackers and DBs. Well, how's that working out for these pundits now? And by the way, Thomas missed most of last season because of concussions and migraines and was placed on injured reserve against his wishes in December because of nagging migraines, an aftereffect of an Oct. 21 car crash. His problems had nothing to do with football.
i'd love to know what being a 7-time-all-pro in a 4-3 means for the 2008 patriots? it certainly doesn't make up for the fact he is old, small, and a major injury concern. people need to smarten up and not look at the name on the back of a jersey. the people who want zach thomas are probably the people that wanted corey dillon too, why don't we bring back bruce armstrong, he was awesome!!! ben coates as well!
would have been nice to have clock killing Corey Dillon the last real drive of the SB.Maybe Eli would not have had 3 min leaving Tom with 39 seconds. would of should of could of ?but maybe
I have a real difficult time understanding what a small, old, and beat up LB can really bring to the party. Maybe the Thomas of 5-7 years ago might be a differnt story, but this is th e NFL and not an old folk's home. Go find some young blood for the inside.
He's worth signing. He has great speed to make plays, and his football smarts are probably on a level that Beichick respects and likes to have in the locker room.
well you people stop talking like zach thomas runs a 4.4 40-yard dash, man this is absolute insanity. the guy still has a nose for the football no doubt, but that is made esp easy when he was standing behind of 4 d-line men and had not other responsibility.
i heard lawrence taylor is coming in for a visit next week, the guy is an athletic freak!
For the geniuses who say Zack can't play in a 3-4, I have a simple question. Are Scott Pioli and Bill Belichick stupid? Newsflash, THEY INVITED HIM TO FOXBORO! Do you think they invited him up for a beer or to shoot the breeze? Has it occurred to you that the Pats invited him here because THEY know he is a potential fit in their system? Maybe you think Zack is up here tlking about playing cornerback or safety for the Pats. Can Zack still play and is he a fit in New England - if you think the answer to either question is "no," Then what you are saying is that Pioli and Belichick are stupid because they are the ones who invited him here.

Ken, Ken, Ken... comparing Welker with one of THE most banged-up worn-out LBs in football is nothing short of HILARIOUS.
By the way, the attention paid to Moss allows Welker to duck and cover every time he catches the ball, so it remains to be seen how Welker does when he actually ever DOES take a hit. You'd better hope Moss stays so Welker doesn't get as much coverage around him...
