Additional pay for Kaczur

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 13, 2008 10:35 AM

Offensive tackle Nick Kaczur is the Patriots' big winner this year as part of the NFL's performance-based-pay program.

Kaczur has been awarded an additional $243,000 for his 2007 performance. Kaczur, whose base salary was $435,000 in 2007, had a 72-percent playing time percentage.

The performance-based-pay program was started in 2002 and is designed to boost the pay of players with lower base salaries who have a high percentage of playing time. Each team is awarded $3.08 million to distribute and that money does not count against the salary cap.

Safety James Sanders was another big Patriots winner, earning an additional $236,000. He had a 66-percent playing time percentage.

Cornerback Ellis Hobbs ($220,000) and outside linebacker Pierre Woods ($160,000) rounded out the top four.

  1. All of these players are very deserving of the awarded money.

Hobbs is playing here for cheap money and catches way too much flack for his playing ability. I gaurentee if he fields offers from other teams as a FA, he will be seeing tenders in the 4-6million range. This is compared to the meager 1mil and less he's been playing for the Pats in the last 3 years according to USA Today NFL salary figures.

  1. Pay for performance bonus? Or pay for playing time bonus? This guy was like a screen door on a submarine in the super bowl.

  1. How much did they deduct for his SuperBowl performance? Or was there a turnstile bonus in his contract as well?

  1. Hi Jon, unfortunately I don't have access to the whole list. Jeff, although it's called performance-based-pay, the money is based on playing time.

  1. Again...people show they are not true football fans. Do people realize he was playing with a pulled groin and torn rotator cuff. Ellis was left on an island on that play! Give me a break! At this stage of his development, he is ahead of where Asante Samuel was. It took Samuel 4+ years to develop into the player he is. Everyone forgets how Hobbs completely took Reggie Wayne out of the 2006 AFC Championship Game. If Hobbs is a bum in many peoples eyes, I will take more of those types of bums on my team!

Uniformed fans rip on Hobbs. Stop forming opinions based on what is said daily on sports radio! Watch the games!

  1. It would be fair if they increased the pool by deducting money from the busted bonus babies of high first round draft picks but that will never happen.

Mike, you mentioned split contracts where the player gets paid a different amount based on whether he is on the active roster or IR. How many Pats have these type contracts and what are the splits like?

  1. Will whos not a football fan? You weren't even right about what player I was talking about. Look at the blog title then look at the comments about turnstiles and screen doors. Does that sound like hobbs bashing. Why don't you pay attention and quite talking about us.

  1. Unfortunately about half of all of this money will be taken away by the IRS.

  1. Michael, he is probably too used to defending Hobbs since everyone loves to bash him and blame him for everything that goes wrong for the Pats. It doesn't help that my first post was as a Hobbs apologist and it can be viewed as you replying to my post.

Although your analogy, "screen door on a sinking submarine" is the perfect way to describe the front 5 during the Super Bowl, not just Kaczur.

  1. dear red sox fans that are parading around as patriots fans please take a hike. okay the patriots didn't win the superbowl but last i checked this team had an undefeated regular season and won 18 games in a row. nick and his o-line took a beating but held in there to give the pats the lead, remember. ellis did get beat but plenty of guys on d had chances to make plays on that last drive. ellis has been steady all year so criticism of their play wont change the outcome of the game. its time to move on

  1. Oh yeah the OL is a huge problem. Brady makes the tackles look way better then they are. If we had better tackles it would be like adding a player since we leave a TE to block on speed ruckers almost every play. I wonder if the OL bought Brady watches when they made the Pro-Bowl?

  1. It's called performance-based-pay but the money is based on playing time, the coaches decide playing time so that must mean they are satisfied with the performance. Way too much is being made of the OL's play in the SB, people need to look at each player as a whole and not base decision on one game, as important as that game way. I bet there are a lot of teams out there that would like to upgrade their O-line but I also bet most people couldn't name 5 starting OT combos in the NFL or player they would like over at least Light. If you are going to complain about something you need to give us a solution as well.

  1. I totally agree with the 'Turnstile theory'. The OL was a disgrace in the Super Bowl. Hopefully we can shake that area up in the upcoming season, knowing that what we currently have, can't cut it when the heat is on. See ya!

  1. I tought Kaczur played awesome at the Superbowl, I don't know where you can see differently. The OL depends on a running QB and Brady wasn't doing any running. Brady, bad foot?? Kaczur played the RT better than Light played LT.
