Troy Brown visits Jets

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff March 17, 2008 03:52 PM

Patriots free agent wide receiver Troy Brown is visiting with the New York Jets today.

The Patriots expressed to Brown during this offseason that he is not currently in their plans for next season and that he was free to solicit offers from other teams if he planned on returning for a 16th season.

It was initially thought that the 36-year-old Brown, the Patriots' all-time leader in receptions with 557, would not even consider teams that would be slated to play the Patriots this season.

However, visiting with the archrival Jets indicates Brown is willing to explore all options before deciding whether he wants to play again next season. Losing Brown to the Jets would be a tough blow for Patriots fans.

One of the most beloved players in franchise history, Brown has played his entire 15-year career in New England.

Only quarterback Steve Grogan (16 seasons) has had a longer Patriots career than Brown, who tied defensive lineman Julius Adams for the second-longest tenure with the franchise last season.

However, Brown didn't catch a pass last season and he played in just one game.

He missed all of training camp following offseason knee surgery and was on the reserve/physically-unable-to-perform list for the first 11 games of the season.

Brown was activated from PUP on Nov. 27, but his only action came as a punt returner in a 28-7 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 23. He returned six punts for 55 yards.

The team's all-time leader in punt returns (252) and punt return yardage (2,625), Brown uncharacteristically had a punt carom off his facemask for a fumble against Miami.

In 2006, Brown caught 43 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns.

  1. It will be a sad, sad day if Troy goes to the Jets. It will be sad enough if he goes anywhere. But the Jets? I can't bear the thought. The only Patriots jersey I own is #80 Brown. To me, Troy epitomizes everything there is about the Patriots - hard work, endurance, perseverence, heart, leadership, willingness to do anything for the team. If the Patriots logo used a real person's image I'd vote for it to be Troy.

  1. Uh, are the Jets operating with a different salary cap this season? They just inked Bubba Franks to deal paying him $1.6mm or so and they only had $4.5 million under the cap after their previous free agent binging. I realize they are trying to build themselves into a professional football team, but what the h!@#? And, If Troy signs there it will be the saddest day for me in 24 years as a Patriots fan. I would almost rather be forced to watch the Bears, Packers and Giants super bowl losses consecutively than see him in a Jets uniform!

Or he makes the team, but Magidiot never lets him start, just to piss off the Pats. Romeo Oh Romeo where for art thou Romeo!

  1. Why are the Patriots so intent on ruining their reputation? This is a horrible decision. Keep Troy Brown someway, somehow. Going to the Jets? Please say this isn't going to happen. We have enough problems right now, we don't need to
help dig our own grave and go back to the Patriots when no one wanted to watch them.

  1. As soon as they signed Aiken, it was over for Brown. Aiken will be the WR playing mainly on special teams. Washington moves up to #4 receiver and there are now 6 receivers with Moss, Welker, Gaffney, Washington, Chad Jackson, and Aiken. There was no way they were going to keep seven receivers on a 53 man roster and there's no room for Brown who made around $1 million last year and didn't really contribute too much. You can't blame the Patriots if he signs with the Jets.

  1. Here are my thoughts:

    1. Why is everyone so upset? If troy thinks he can still play, good for him to go out and try.

    2. Why should he feel any allegiance to the pats? They basically said: Troy we dont think you can cut it in the NFL anymore.

    3. So if BB and SP dont think he can play anymore he should just hang them up?

  1. Please everyone, get off the ledge. Troy is one of the classiest Pats ever and WAS one of their best receivers ever, if not the best. But that was some years ago. The Pats did him a favor by telling him in March that they won't sign him. It's better than cutting him during training camp. Barring serious injuries, he would have been hard pressed to make the team. If he still wants to play and the NYJ want him, so be it. He won't be catching 102 passes from fellow Marshall alum Chad Pennington and/or Kellen Clemens. Don't expect the Jets to be a big threat in 2008 just because they signed a few decent players. They need more than that.

  1. I loved Troy Brown when he was here, but he's not exactly been a top player the last couple years. I think he has every right to do whatever he wants with his career and it does make me sad to see him go, especially to the Jets, but I do not at all fault the Patriots. At some point they can't keep players around that aren't producing. I thought last season was the swan song for Brown. They paid him a salary to do nothing; put him in a game for old time's sake; and if he wanted to be a forever Patriot then he should have retired this year. If he doesn't that's his perogative, but don't blame the Patriots for this -- they've already been more than generous with him.

  1. Don't go Johny Damon on him? Are you stupid? I bet you are still a # 4 fan too right? Forget that if Troy goes to the jets then he will take all the hard work he did bulding his career here in NE and flush it right down the drain as far as I am concerned it would be a slap in my face as a pats fan and as a pats fan i will shun Troy if he breaks my heart and goes to the jets. And thats the way it should be, if I ever get a chance to meet Adam Vinateri I will spit in his face and Troy should not be treated any diffrently. If he makes this happen then he flushing it all away and it will tear a hole in my soul....

  1. I can understand people being upset because its the Jets but whats with the anger towards the Pats? I trust BB and SP when it comes to these decisions. I hate to see Troy go just as much as the next guy but lets be realistic. The Pats have got where they are by following the same business model every year. Just because you think hes a great guy (and he is) or he is your favorite player doesnt mean they should pay him. Its based on what they do on the field and not personal feelings. Thats why they gave him the courtesy of letting him know early, they have respect for the guy but they arent about to sign him if they dont think it will translate on the field.

  1. As sickening as it is to think of Troy in a Jets, Colts, or Dolphins uniform, I say this guy gave his all for this team for fifteen years, took the money that he got instead of saying "Pay me or I'm gone" in an era of players who think they're worth more than everyone else, and helped take this team to three SBs. If the Patriots don't think he's worth hanging onto for another year, if for nothing more than the presence he has in the locker room and on the sidelines, then this player who played selflessly for this team for fifteen years should do what he thinks is right for himself. I don't care what team he plays for, I will root for him to do well, and I will know that he will retire as a Patriot because you can bet your bottom dollar that he will get a one-day contract to retire in his #80 uniform.

And never, ever underestimate a ball player with heart like Troy Brown. Seems like just last year when everyone else was scoffing at us for picking up a so-called "has been" who then turned around and set a franchise touchdown record. As we well know anything is possible - including another great year for Troy Brown. Troy stay where you are loved and appreciated - New England.

  1. As a youth Football coach I held up Troy Brown as the perfect role model. He did what he was asked by his coaches, to the best of his ability (a very high level), in some very difficult situations. He played both ways in the modern NFL! Not just a token deep dback on a hail mary but for 3 downs, then he went back and caught the punts! Never a complaint, never a show off. A classy, classy guy and a perfect role model.

If he goes to the Jets I will cheer for him all but 2 games a year. He will always be a Patriot in my mind.

  1. It's traitor, not trader. And he's got enough character that not even know nothing fans should question him or the Pats staff. There's no way he'd contribute to the 2008 Pats team, in spite of his character. Troy is the quintessential Patriot, representing everything this team stands for. I remember the key phrase of the 2000 season: "Good things happen when Troy Brown touches the ball." It was so true. People who've met him say he's an even better person. Unfortunately athletes get old. If he played for the Jets it would be like Unitas at San Diego or Jimmy Taylor as a Saint. But it's his life and he's going to make choices on what's best for him. He'll always be my favorite player not matter what he does; not only as a player but as a man.

I would love to see him play one more year, and make a run at a 4th Super Bowl title. I just can't see him playing for ANY other team but the Patriots...least of all the JETS!! 1. Troy Brown is the ultimate New England Patriot and he deserves to be a first ballot Hall of Fame inductee. He has the individual stats/team records, he has the Superbowl rings, he has the yrs in the league and he even played ironman football (WR,DB & Special Teams), usually all 3 in one game. Plus his attitude, work ethic, and leadership (BB said that he has never coached a better player than Troy Brown) is tops and is well respected among NFL players, fans and the media.

However, all this goes out the window if he goes to the Jets. As much as I love and respect Troy Brown, the same words I use about other ex-Patriots who leave the team for browner pastures will be said for Troy Brown. These words are "You're a bum (Vinateri, McGinist, Milloy, etc)!!! You always were!!!!" - Of course with Troy, it would be like jabbing a knife into my ribs every time I say it.

God Bless You Troy Brown! (unless you are a Jet).

Let's face it the Jets aren't much of rivals, this doesn't really hurt us (except emotionally). As someone previously mentioned, if this happens I'll cheer for him for 14 games, and give him one hell of an ovation when he does set foot in Gilette. He's earned it. And our respect.

And I love how the Jets continually make a run at EVERY SINGLE former Patriot. It's sad, really. Almost like a Oedipus complex. They just need Drew Bledsoe and they'll have the 2001 team. I can see the Jets making a run at Tom Brady when he's 38.

  1. This is the problem with athletes - no when to hang it up - The Pats essentially let Troy hang around last year, paid him his million even though they knew he would do nothing for them.

Troy doesn't need the money - in fact I would think if he turned down the Jets he would make more money from New England endorsements down the road than he would with the Jets this year.

Once he signs with the Jets he no longer has any value endorsement wise in NE.

  1. The only reason the Jets would sign Brown would be to annoy the Patriots and then perhaps to have him retire and coach with the Jets as WR coach reunited with Brian Daboll who's coaching the Jets' QBs now. I would be worried sbout the Jets regardless. They are set up to run the ball extremely well. And for those fans up here who think the Pats will run them over it is going to be different. They hired Bill Callahan as the OL coach and he had the raiders leading the league in rushing. They sign Faneca and Woody who are both known for run blocking as well as tony richardson the best blocking FB in the game since Neal retired. Now they signed Bubba Franks and their other TE Chris Baker has developed into a great blocker after coming into the league adn still having some of the softest hands for a TE. was scary some of the catches he
