Extra 3rd round pick

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 3, 2008 09:32 AM

The Patriots have selections in each round of the 2008 NFL draft, as well as an additional third-round selection from the Raiders.

The additional third-round pick comes from a trade made during the 2007 draft. The Patriots had shipped a 2007 third-round pick (91st overall, OL Mario Henderson) to the Raiders for a 2008 third-round pick.

The NFL confirmed this morning that the third-round pick will be in the sixth slot of the round. That is the 69th overall selection.

Because the Raiders were one of four teams to finish 4-12 last season (Falcons, Chiefs, Jets), the exact spot of the pick could not be determined until a coin flip sorted out the first-round order. Once the first-round order was determined, the teams would then go on a rotating basis from picks 3-6 in ensuing rounds.

So looking back, the Patriots sacrificed the chance to select a player last year to move up 22 spots in the round in this year's draft.
