Free agency: Day 3

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 2, 2008 08:35 AM

Five nuggets on the third day of free agency:

  • 1) Still no deal for Moss. The NFL Network's Adam Schefter reported Saturday that sources say Moss is growing frustrated at the lack of progress in negotiations with the Patriots. ESPN's John Clayton previously reported that the sides weren't close to a deal and Moss is willing to listen to other suitors. At this point, it is not known if another club has stepped up to express interest in Moss.

  • 2) Ty Law talks Patriots & free agency. Cornerback Ty Law has yet to be officially released by the Chiefs, so interested clubs can not yet speak with him. But in an interview with the Boston Globe, Law spoke with excitement about playing another 2-3 years, while exploring the possibility of returning to New England.

  • 3) Recapping Asante Samuel's deal. Cornerback Asante Samuel's deal with the Eagles is a six-year package with a potential maximum value of $61.5 million, according to a source involved with the negotiations. Samuel had been focusing on the first three years of the deal -- because NFL contracts aren't guaranteed, up-front money is key -- and he'll receive $32.1 million in the first three years of his pact.

  • 4) Browns comment on Stallworth. In confirming the signing of WR Donte' Stallworth, Browns general manager Phil Savage touched on what Stallworth adds to the Cleveland offense. "He will bring legitimate speed, quickness and playmaking ability to the receiving corps," Savage said.

  • 5) Larry Izzo: 1-year deal. Patriots special teams captain Larry Izzo's contract is a one-year agreement. Izzo will earn the veteran minimum $830,000 in 2008. He received a $40,000 signing bonus, qualifying him for the veteran minimum benefit which reduces his salary cap charge.

    1. Hey Mike, question for you on Moss...do you have any info as to why the sides are not close? Is he asking for silly money? With Berrian getting all that dough in Minnesota it only seems that it would push up the asking price for Moss and his agents. Given that the Pats are not one to break the bank on any player do you think this has something to do with it?

    1. Hey Mike
Its hard to imagine the Pats not resigning Moss, but do you think his lack of energy (possibly injured?) in the playoffs may have turned them off a bit?

    1. Why would the Patriots be interested in Ty Law. That would take money away from its priority - Patriot Place.

Get with the program, folks. It's Bass Pro Shops or Bust.
