Matt Walsh in focus

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 10, 2008 09:11 AM

Colleague Bob Hohler writes an extensive piece on former Patriots employee Matt Walsh in Monday's editions of the Boston Globe.

The piece was written after more than 30 individuals were interviewed by the Globe during a monthlong inquiry into Walsh's role in the Patriots' videotaping procedures.

  1. Sounds like a loser, not the first time he’s stuck a knife in someone’s back

  1. It's fair to say that Bob Hohler is no John Tomase.

  1. Is anyone investigating the hiring of Walsh's attorney? Could it be Spector?
Huh, sounds fishy to me!! Is it pro bono or who is paying the attorney?
I hope the Pat's sue the britches off of Walsh and Spector!!!

  1. I say let the panel that just raked Roger Clemens over the coals, subpoena Walsh & force him to testify under oath.

No "deal" should need to be reached between any parties.

Take the Stand, be Sworn-In & TELL THE TRUTH!

If Walsh can't handle that, than nothing he has to say should have any credibility what-so-ever, attached to it.

That's how simple this really all is.

  1. Bob Hohler wrote: " either....Walsh's role in Spygate are overblown or he holds secrets that could make Belichick, Kraft, and their franchise football pariahs, their reputations disgraced...."

In the eyes of all but die-hard Patriots fans, their reputations are already disgraced".

  1. Completely agree with Triplets
Specter waits 5 mos to delve in to BB's taping
Timing for maximum exposure could not have been better
He couldn't come out with the issue around the lack of response from the NFL about his Nov letter - too small, nobody cares
    But he wanted the exposure
Tomase writes a 3 sentence story (i counted) Quoting unnamed sources (probably a phone call and info in exchange for anonymity – my guess from Specters office)
Tomase gets national exposure because he is a Boston writer - he looks more credible.
Walsh lawyer is from a major DC law firm 5,000 Mi from Walsh, 500 feet from Specter (again - I counted)

So we get to wait to see what Walsh comes out with.

I’ve read reports on the account. Went like this “….after taping the Rams walk though – Walsh got in the media bus for a ride back to the hotel…”
To me – a media bus departing from the stadium after a closed-practice doesn’t make sense, second- if what he was doing was supported by the Pats and important to the team, doesn’t it make sense that they would have provided transportation and not made him take the bus? Small stuff – but it doesn’t add up to a policy supported by the Pats.

Another point – in the beginning, Specter was gung ho about attacking the Pats, his rhetoric was very strong, but the last thing I heard (may not be his last word…) was that the lawsuit filed by the former Ram’s player meant that he needed to do nothing else because his interest would be served by that law suit. Assuming I have that right, sounds like Specter is back-peddling away from his earlier stance. Could point to an underlying weakness in the case he dredged up.

On the flip side - I think there is a possibility that Walsh could have something significant. The litmus test is the DC lawyer. Smart lawyers don’t take cases that will make them look bad or they can’t win. Lawyers in DC are probably pretty smart. He has seen what Walsh has. He is still involved with the case - so – I am fearful this thing may have some merit.
Authorized or not – Walsh may have something that would not be good.
I believe in BB but this one is going to hurt – even if it can’t be proven that it was authorized, there is always going to be folks that think the Pats won because of what this guy did and this whole BS taping cr*p will follow them around for a long while – deserved or not.

  1. this story about walsh's character was always out there because when espn first interviewed this guy they couldn't find any record of him playing golf for springfield college. but instead of doing some more fact checking they ran with the story. the ap is guilty too. walsh mentioned on his online resume that he tried out for the us bobsled team but there is public record of him being anywhere near a us bobsled lol. i mean mike fish is reporting that walsh's lawyer is going on vacation? great job 4th estate

  1. The fact of the matter is this ... The Pats were taping since 2000, BB said so. Does anyone really think the Pats were the ONLY team doing this? As far as the impact on their accomplishments goes, I know what I felt during those winning moments, and no matter what comes out, whether the Pats ordered this or not, really has no bearing on those memories as will remember them forever.. Also fellow Pats fans, while the nation is busy watching this Spygate stuff, the Pats are stocking up for another run...Go Pats!!
