Mike Wright follow-up

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 19, 2008 07:45 AM

One follow-up from the contract signed by DL Mike Wright late last week:

The deal was the restricted free-agent tender of $1.417 million, meaning Wright is playing under a one-year, $1.417 million contract.

Wright is now scheduled for unrestricted free agency after the 2008 season.

In some cases, restricted free agents like Wright sign longer-term deals. That was what happened with OL Billy Yates in 2007. Yates was a restricted free agent, but instead of signing his tender offer, he inked a three-year extension through 2009.

  1. Does MW signing his free agent tender prevent the Patriots from signing a longer term deal before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2009? Perhaps the Pats are waiting to see whether Mike is fully recovered from his injury before committing to a longer term contract. Before his injury he was a valuable reserve filling in at backup nose tackle and if needed at end. BTW what is his health status?
