More on Randy Moss

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 3, 2008 02:57 PM

After a quiet few days of activity on the opening of free agency, the Patriots are on the verge of making a big splash with receiver Randy Moss.

A contract agreement between the Patriots and Moss is imminent, according to a source with close ties to Moss. The deal is for three years and is worth $27 million.

The sides had been close since the start of free agency, having agreed on the overall value of the pact. The main sticking point was in the amount of guaranteed money included in the deal.

Talks between the sides heated up today, as Moss's top priority was returning to New England.

The Patriots have seen a handful of players sign with new clubs through the first three days in free agency -- a group includes cornerback Asante Samuel (Eagles), receiver Donte’ Stallworth (Browns) and cornerback Randall Gay (Saints) -- but their top target always remained Moss.

  1. Hey Mike,
Can you tell us how does Randy's contract compared to other star WRs like T.O., Steve Smith, Marvin Harrison, etc???
    Thanks.

  1. Finally. I know, I know, but I was a little worried about those cowboys signing him.

Touchdown Express...Brady to Moss for another 3 years

  1. Isn't the guaranteed money always the sticking point? We all know that the overall value of the contract over years is important, but mostly meaningless. Hard to say "they're close...except for the guaranteed money. " The guaranteed money is..you know...kind of like THE issue ALL the time.

  1. to all who thought that the kraft's were crazy not to have franchised moos or who thought that moss was unappreciative of the opportunity in new england. you still don't get it that the ownership of the patriots and their system is different. randy moss gets the joke. we may have lost the super bowl but we still have the best sports franchise in america, second only

  1. Dallas fans actually thought they had a shot at Moss. All this speculation and Moss never even listened to offers from other teams. The press is a joke!

  1. The Cowgirls really thought they had a shot at him! Moss isn't going to play with "boohoo that's my quarterback" Terell. All of this speculation and Moss hasn't even talked to any other teams. The press is a joke!

  1. This is great - provided that the real RM is the guy who was so dominant during the first 3/4 of the regular season, and not the guy who completely disappeared after that. Count me as hopeful but very cautious. Hey, it's not my $27M...

  1. I am glad he is resigned but if he did not sign please remember we won 3 without him and lost 1 with him.

  1. Signing Randy was crucial and the Pats are close to doing that. Forget Asante Samuel, Randall Gay, and Donte Stallworth, we need Moss the most!

  1. Randy to Asante: I might be dumb, but I"m not stupid. What size ring do you wear? Oh, I'm sorry, it doesn't matter now.

  1. Randy Moss? It has been all about Randy Moss, and if you want to keep Tom Brady
happy, you have to sign Randy Moss.A happy Tom Brady will keep the Pats as a contender for a Super Bowl win in 2008

  1. Moss did not "disappear" Week 17. Remember how he burned the Giants secondary two consecutive plays?

As for the playoffs, we'll never know how much Brady's injury affected his ability to throw deep, but he underthrew Moss at least once in the Super Bowl. Ultimately, football is a team game and Moss served a role drawing the defense's attention in the playoffs.

Posted by Rick March 3, 08 03:32 PM
  1. Not sure he is worth the money. $$$$$$$. He (Randy) practically disappeared
during the playoffs and especially the SUPER BOWL!!!. I don't think that
Jerry Rice would have done the same. He would have found ways to get
open and make the BIG Plays. They brought him there to do one thing, that was
to win a Super Bowl. I rest my case.

    Very disappointed in Glendale, CA.

  1. Great that Moss is finally close

Whats-up w/ESPN's Clayton??? He sure has the inside story - Moss and Cullpepper to finish what they started and look for a new team togther, seems hard enough to do a single deal let alone a package deal!

Now what about the other side of the ball, CBs, LBs and safties? Maybe I should as Clayton - he'll know!!!! Hey John, are there any safties, CBs and LBs that are seeking to go to a new team as a group???

  1. New England Math = 12 + 81= 6 (points) Gotta Love Tom Brady and Randy Moss. GO PATRIOTS. We need to sign him, after losing a lot of players.

  1. Patsfan1, you are the joke. In case you haven't heard, free agents have the right to listen to offers from other teams and, quite frankly, are foolish not to even if they prefer to sign with a certain team. Not sure how or why you think that Moss didn't at least listen to what other teams had to offer. You're an out-of-touch fan who will believe anything and everything that the Patriots want you and the rest of their Kool-Aid drinking fans to believe.

Bring back Ty Law now for a 2 year deal to start now and help the guy we draft this year to learn the system to take over after that and we'll be better without $amuel. Law learned, Milloy learned, now S$amuel will learn. Meriweather all the way baby! Hey let's trade Miami to get Howie Longs kid! Wow! Wouldn't that be Awesome?

  1. I know I said this>>>More than once on numerous threads.....Randy was not going to Dallas. Cuz TO will not play with Moss. Moss said no way when he was in Oakland to a TO signing. So why would anyone even think Moss would leave NE. Just look at the money he got, that says not a whole lot of teams came sniffing after Moiss. He needs Brady to keep his SB hopes alive!

    Posted by Running_Back_22 March 3, 08 03:57 PM

Samuel looked like he was going to cry at his press conference, not very happy camper, wait until the classless fans of PA boo him when he makes an error.

  1. Yeah, the Patriots have just signed away any chance of them winninng another super bowl. What they need to do is see if they can get anybody worth anything for that lame excuse at Quarterback, I think we all know of that is.

Posted by peyton manning March 3, 08 04:07 PM
  1. 23 times 3 is... 69... so take Moss's 124, and make it 187... and jerry rice can move to Miami and hangout with the 72 Dolphins... Brady, we'll give him 40 over the next 3 years... thats 120 in addition to the 197... makes a rough 320... 5 year after that Favre can move to Miami with the dolpins...

    y'all follow me right???

Posted by matt March 3, 08 04:12 PM
  1. Its great to have the real number 81 in a pats uniform again next year. Wouldn't have it any other way. GO PATS!!!

Posted by Ken March 3, 08 04:14 PM
  1. In his first year with the Patriots last season, Moss set a NFL record with 23 touchdown receptions. He totaled 98 catches for 1,493 yards, playing in a whopping 88 percent of the team's snaps. His presence alone generally dictated how defenses defended the Patriots. Think he maybe might be worth the money.

Posted by PATSFANINFLA March 3, 08 04:14 PM
  1. Hopefully the Pats can bring in Daunte Culpepper to play backup TE now that Kyle Brady was cut....

  1. Now that we have Randy in the mix - here how we get that
    next SuperBowl Championship.

    1) Trade Richard Seymour to Denver for Champ Bailey.
Note to Seymour: If you want to be paid like the best DL on the league
    - you have to play like you want to be the best DL in the league. I
can accept the injury - I can't accpet the disinterest.

    2) Extend Big Vince Wilfork as he has been the best defensive player on the Patriots
    the last two years.

    3) Sign Ty Law. I expect that the starting safeties will be Meriwether and Sanders - with Law filling the R. Gay role in the nickle and dime defenses.

    4) Trade First round pick to Dallas for numbers 22 and 28.

    5) Rebuild Defense.

The Patriots defense has gotten old and slow and has failed to make
one stop at the end of the game in each of the last two years. There are
two challenges - one is finding enough players who fit into that Okie 5-2
defense. You need to find LBers large enough to set the edge on the outside
and fill gaps on the inside. And you need to find a NT. There are only
so many of those players around. The fact that the Jets and Browns are both
looking for the same type of players also doesn't help.

The other point is that having slower/smarter/older players was less of a
disagvantage when you played on Gillete's muddy grass field. Every team is going to
the fast FieldTurf and the Patriots can't keep up. So Brushi, Harrison
and Seau are nice players - but clearly part time players at this stage of
    their careers.

    Peace

    Joe E O

  1. Sorry guys but Randy has nothin on Chad! Sad truth

Posted by David March 3, 08 04:22 PM
  1. Seems like a good deal. Viewing it with cautious optimism. Hopefully the good Randy we saw for most of the season will continue to show up. The Pats didn't need the distraction from the circus that came a few days before the Super Bowl. Now if they can land Chad Johnson also that would be a very formidable receiving corps.

Nobody here has mentioned that the Pats need to do something about their offensive line? I think the assumption is that they are great, but the Giants were all over them. There are holes that need to be filled there. Can't have Brady getting sacked 5x per game. Obviously, cornerback is also a gaping hole. Pats need tall and fast CBs. Plaxico Burress was nearly 7-8" taller than Hobbs. Real easy to throw to the taller WR by lobbing.

Posted by John March 3, 08 04:29 PM
  1. I agree. Now we need to look at needs in the CB area. Another WR would be great, but that O-line was sad when we played the Giants. Giants "Blitzed" our butts into submission. Gotta fix that, quickly

    Posted by Running_Back_22 March 3, 08 05:48 PM
  1. to Joe e o
Harrison played on Dallas Clark and Jason Witten last year and done a VERY good job. Check the stats of these two against other teams. Indy and Dallas both fast indoor fields. I also remember him shutting down Pittsburgh at the goal line. Two plays all him!! INT to finish off JAX in play-offs. The Tyree catch WAS broken up by Rodney. Thats how Tyree ended up with one hand and a helmet on the ball. Big Vince is a NT and Mike Wright is also coming back this year. Have to agree about large fast LBs though.
