Moss connects with Culpepper

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff March 2, 2008 12:37 PM

At the Super Bowl Tom Brady, said that he and Randy Moss are a package deal.

But Moss might have other ideas at this point as he tests free agency. According to ESPN's John Clayton, Moss reached out to fellow free agent Daunte Culpepper, who was Moss's quarterback with the Minnesota Vikings, and discussed the possibility of a reunion.

Clayton points out it wouldn't be a package deal per se, but if a team were in the market for a quarterback and the best receiver on the planet it would be an enticing option to reunite the two, who were teammates on the Vikings from 1999 to 2004. Culpepper, who spent last season with the Oakland Raiders, became the starter for Minnesota in 2000 and had the best years of his career playing with Moss.

  1. If Brady was at all serious about his wanting to be with Moss, then the Pats need to sign the guy. We are a much better team when Brady is happy, and Moss has proven that he is a difference maker. The one thing we have lacked is the ability to make adjustments on offense. Perhaps a bit more planning is in order?

  1. When will this nightmare end??? For the first time, ever, my faith in Bill, Scott, and the rest of the front office has come crumbling down. If Moss isn't back, this will be the end of a great ride. The team is already considered a cocktail joke, right up there with the Dolphins. This just adds salt and vinegar to the gaping wound. It's getting harder to put on the ol' pat cap.

  1. Is there a line of thinking that if NE couldn't win last year, then maybe there is no certain way to get a ring, and thus NE has lost its luster? Has Moss changed his mindset from playing with a top-two QB with a great chance at a SB ring, to ending his career with a team that has little chance at a SB win (especially if they need a QB of Daunte's 'caliber' )?

  1. yeah, good luck there Moss. Culpepper would be lucky to be a number 2 QB on any team. It's called the Patriots way....If you can't except a 30M contract with a 10M signing bonus, then go take your threats elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, we'd love to have you on our team. But we're not breaking the bank so you can be happy. Remember those great times in Oakland...yeah, you may want to think twice before deciding where to play the remainder of your career.

You don't see Brady whining on the contracts with Peyton, etc. Remember you make more money in a year than most people make in their entire lives

  1. Culpeppers done, two Randy Moss's wouldn't help him, and look for a return to the Randy Moss of old.

  1. If New England loses Randy Moss then they have no shot at a SB ring, they already lost Stallworth and Samuel, now there only good player would be Brady. I think the broncos could use moss and culpepper, Cutler is nowhere to being ready and they already lost walker and basically smith. There only good reciever is Marshall.

  1. LOL. Randy Moss is turing into a complete joke right now. He is contradicting everything he has said since he came to NE...
    1) He is excited to catch passes from Tom Brady
    2) It's not about the money, he has plenty of it
    3) He wants to win championships, where else better than NE
    4) Tom Brady is the best QB he has every played with
    5) BB is the best coach he has ever played for.
    6) He wants to end his career in NE

Wow Randy...you're really full of sh!t and going back to your old selfish ignorant self again. So you're going to go from the best QB in the league in Tom Brady to an old washed up QB in Culpepper?? Even the Dolphins didn't want the guy...what does that say to you Mr. Moss??

  1. Despite all the hoopla, I'm sure the Past are doing what they always do - analyzing the signing as strictly business. If I'm the Pats I have to wonder who the real Moss is - the guy who was unstoppable the first 12 weeks or so, or the guy who looked like he didn't want to jump or stretcrh for a ball the last few games. Yeah, I heard all the triple teaming talk, but I think there was something more at work. All great receivers get special attention. Maybe Randy is just a guy who gets bored when it isnt all about him. If so, see ya, Randy - thanks for the memories.

  1. Right on Nellie T.

Hey Randy, it's time to choose -- a lot of money and a great team, or more money and some wannabes.

"Since I came here it's been all positive." That's right dude -- so you gonna throw that all away?

I hope you choose a team better than you do girlfriends.

  1. Listen, If Moss goes he goes! Brady was a great QB before Moss with average recievers at best, and he will be great without him. I love Randy in a pats uni, but he is not the reason we have 3 bowl wins this decade, as the matter of fact we lost our only superbowl that we played in th 2000"s with him. Think about it folks!!!

  1. The bears will take them both. Culpepper wont be any worse than Grossman, Orton, or Griese. And with Muhammad and Berrian gone, they could use a good wide reciever.... but that's just me dreaming because the bears are not capable of spending money on things thqat actually matter.

  1. What MIke said in his other column makes the most sense. Moss has received an offer, and he's testing the market to see if he's comfortable with it. Currently the Pats have about $15-22 million in salary cap space. I'm just guessing, but I would bet that the offer they made him is between $8-10 million for 3 years with about $15-20 million guaranteed. I don't see where they have the means to go much deeper than that because they still have to sign Jab, too, and don't forget all the holes they have to fill on defense. You can't count on the draft to find your starting CB or LB either. I can't see them offering him a deal for more years than that because the Pats rarely do that, and Moss is getting old. All this nonsense about trying to hook up with Culpepper or wanting to play for the Packers is laughable. I love the nameless idiot for the Herald who suggested that one of the top five teams that Moss would be looking at is Pittsburgh when the Steelers have like $2 in salary cap space. Mike always provides the best analyses.

  1. The longer this goes on the more it sounds like Moss is going to stay. The Green Bay rumor was completely contrived by Adam Shefter and the latest rumor of a conversation with Culpepper is laughable. Daunte was so bad even the Dolphins cut him. As it stands, neither one of them have a team.

Randy, stay with Brady. You have some unfinished business from last year.

  1. I just have to wondering why we have not heard of any other team making an offer. After all this is the top rated Free agent he can get offers from any team he wants. But no team has said or leak out that an offer has been made. I think this is strange. Maybe that the reason he has not signed .there is just no interest in him no teams wants to make him the highest paid football player in the game..

  1. C'mon Guys - you all have NO idea what your talking about so chill out and wait until something happens. For those of you who already posted negative assumptions about Moss's motives - won't you feel incredibly embarassed if/when Moss re-signs.

Haven't you realized that the media has NO IDEA what they're talking about...so please don't rush to judgment over these articles - especially those originating on ESPN. Remember - they wouldn't be in business if they didn't know how to get people worked up about absolutely nothing.

CHILL OUT - things will be fine. If we don't sign Moss, we'll sign some defense - remember we won most of our championships with ridiculous defense...Something which was inconsistent this past season.

  1. Three Super Bowls without him, none with him. Don't get me wrong, he's the best receiver on the planet and he seemed to buy into the "patriot way." But, the patriot way is about team and not about being the highest paid at your position. Doesn't anybody remember what Brady and Co. accomplished with Troy Brown and David Givens? Let him go, this is Favre's last season, if that, do you think Moss is looking forward to three years of hooking up with Aaron Rogers?

  1. Okay, at first I was nervous that Moss wasn't coming back. But after hearing him say that him and Culpepper are getting back together somewhere, not so sure I care anymore.

"Hey Duante, lets go somewhere together so you can overthrow the ball again, or throw a pick at the wrong time, or fumble in key situations. If all goes well maybe we can lose in NFC title game again 41-0. Of course when you screw up again I'll be sure to give you crap on the sidelines. Either way after the game you, me, and rest of the crew can rent a boat and have a good ol time. Let me know. BTW, hows the knee?"

  1. Is it possible that Myra Kraft has insisted that they don't resign Moss due to the issue in Floriday? I though I heard something about how disappointed she was in that whole situation.

moss ought to sign for less to play with brady, be on national tv all the time and be relevant... it's a lotta fun, mercenaries are never happy, you dont need that much money anyway... randy, stay where u were re-born and people love u, u have a history here now...

  1. all of you guys are a bunch of stupid @$$ bandwagoners!!! can you blame Daunte for wanting to reclaim his former glory? NO!!!!! he at one point in his career was better than every single qb in the league bar none he is a hero in my book most guys would have given up had they sustained an injury of his magnitude. But he pressed on and now all his hard work will pay off this year i cant wait to hear... Culpepper to Moss for a touchdown!!! and as far as possible landing spots i see atlanta, chicago and denver all as possible places where they could reunite!!!

  1. I am glad that Moss is connecting with Culpepper. Brady wasted the opportunity of NE winning by not revealing that he was not good enough to play.

It all comes back and the best receiver in the league knows that Brady was faking it in the super bowl.

There will never be any more super bowl rings for the stealing and cheating NE.

  1. Moss and Culpepper on the same team again? A lot of people think Culpepper would not be as good. Think of them on the Vikings again? You take Jackson who practically a starter when he came into the league with Minnesota. He did not have anyone to learn off of. So if you bring Culpepper back to Minnesota when his career was great in his early years with Randy Moss. Then when Randy Moss left his career went down. It would be smart if Minnesota went out and got them both. It would bring back pride to Viking Football not that there is no pride in it alreadt. It would also have T Jack learning from Culpepper. The way I look at it is have Culpepper and Wide Receivers Moss, Berrian, and Rice. If Culpepper doesnt do well sit him. Honestly who cares your not paying him 8 million a year.

Moss is better with Brady as QB im not saying he shoudlLeave New England. But i think a team that should go after Moss is the Minnesota Vikings again.

  1. Funny all the Culpepper hate. I'll take Culpepper's production prior to the injury over any QB in the league include Manning. Check the stats folks. people like to rewrite history. Put anybpdy behind the offenisve lines in Miami and Oakland and lets see how they do especially recovering from a blown out knee. We all saw what a joke Brady is when you hit him. I'll take a heathy Culpepper and Moss anyday over a healthy Brady and who you got Wes?

  1. If Randy isn't happy in N.E., I wish him well wherever he goes, but I don't think he will be as good without Brady, who can showcase any player. It's like having a good dance partner - it makes you look good.
Randy was the best this year because of Tom Brady, period.
