NFL.com: Frustration for Moss

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 1, 2008 03:18 PM

NFL Network's Adam Schefter writes on Randy Moss, noting that "those who know Moss say he is inching closer to the point of frustration at the lack of progress he has made for a new deal with the Patriots."

The piece then explores the possiblity that Moss could wind up in Green Bay, perhaps influencing Brett Favre's decision to play one more season.

  1. Wow. Lots of speculation. Schefter could do the same reasoning to find a fit for Moss on every NFL team. There's nothing there.

  1. It's really not possible that after all that has been written, said, and done the Pats could be that far from an agreement with Moss. He's paid his dues, the Pats should be ready to do as much. Perhaps the question comes down to whether the Pat's "culture" is more important than winning. Until now, the two have been in lock step. After last year, one might ask whether they still are. The news of the last few days would indicate that hubris has taken over from vision. I hope not.

How do you not FRANCHISE Moss without a done deal?

  1. I'll be bummed if Moss leaves, but all you panicky noobs should remember that the Pats won 3 Super Bowls without him, and so far none with him. In fact they won those 3 rings with a bunch of also rans for WR's. They won with rock-solid defenses, great game planning and sound ball control oriented offenses. That's what I would like to see them get back to, whether or not they re-sign Randy.

  1. The Patriots better get the deal done otherwise you are looking at a ton of upset fans and more importantly Tom Brady.

Shame on the Patriots for jacking up ticket prices and letting half the defense go and only signing an aging Ted Bruschi. Well I love Teddy, that kind of move isn't going to jazz up the fans. Watching the Jets and Fins make move after move and the Pats sitting back and letting half the team go.

If I am Brady and I do not get a true #1 WR I am livid. You don't treat him one year and pull back the reigns.

  1. If Moss leaves Brady should ask for a trade, that would turn some heads in Foxboro.where would this franchise be without Brady.Does Polian ask Peyton to go with new recievers every year.maybe he could get an offensive line that doesn't get him hit 27 times in the super bowl and get a coach that can work better protection schemes, maybe Don Capers is the answere.last year was great, but another exodus this yearI've been a fan since 1960 so Belichick was great , but Maybe its time for a change

  1. If Moss leaves ... under any circumstances ... then either Belichick or Pioli's head should be served up on a platter.

Why this team had the opportunity to franchise Moss and FAILED to do so, is beyond human comprehension ... they should've slapped the damned franchise tag on him and continued negotiating.

So what if Moss would be 'offended' by the tag ... worrying about bruising his 'fragile ego' has done them a lot of good, hasn't it?? And, I've never seen an ego that couldn't be healed by a few extra million $$ ...

This situation is becoming almost criminal in stupidity and incompetence ... and if Moss goes, someone else should be fired too.

Remember, he helped blow the Super Bowl with not one, but two, misses in the last 45 seconds - when he could have been the "hero," he failed miserably - so he's not perfect. If we get him back, fine - if not, good luck to him. Please don't lose sleep if he moves on - the Patriots always seem to pull it together one way or another. No one person means success or failure for a TEAM...

  1. I am getting sick of watching this team take weapons away from their only real star, Brady. All the years they've had probably the best qb in the league, and the only weapon they gave him prior to this season was Branch. Finally, they gave him some offensive weapons, and he responded with and amazing season. And now they want to take that away? The only receiver they've signed so far is Washington, who had zero catches last year. It's frustrating.

  1. The dream scenario Schefter writes about will never happen because if you have followed Green Bay GM Ted Thompson's approach to FA you would know he does not get involved in signing big time FA's, especially WR's. This is a pipe dream.

Now, on the Dallas rumor here is what, someone in the organization was quoted as saying "there's no way." http://myespn.go.com/blogs/hashmarks?tag=randy%20moss It's common sense that TO would revolt if Moss was signed.

These are all rumors because all is quiet on the Moss front. Let's just wait and see what happens and everyone relax.

  1. The Pats are going to rebuild on the fly here and shame on the Globe for their lack of insights/info on what's going on in with the team. They let Samuel go, dumped Colvin and seem to be pushing Moss away. Meanwhile, they are taking a slow approach on FAs and are looking to resign the aged Bruschi and role players like Washington and Paxton. This is after having boosted ticket prices. They are $15-18 million under the cap to boot. I can agree with their willingness not to carry bad contracts or restrict themselves in the future but the front office needs to show the fans some respect and declare their vision for the team. Tell us that Moss is not worth $48 million over 4 years, tell us that the team is looking to rebuild through the draft, tell us that the plan is to be back in the SB next year,

Let's be realistic - it's not the end of the world if the Pats don't re-sign him. And I doubt it's anything on the Pats end that's holding things up.

  1. The Pats need to think long and hard about this one. Moss is a difference maker, there is no doubt about it. Of course he is going to want that kind of money as well. I say pay the man, and I rarely ever say that about a player. He is a major reason the offense was so devastatingly effective last year. We got rid of Stallworth, so we need to keep Moss around.

Pay the man. You were right in letting Asante go, but if you let Moss go it is like saying you don't want to be competitive anymore.

  1. Did everyone give up after the AFC Championship game? I mean, the Super Bowl performance made it clear that the coaches did, that many of the players went through the motions. But now Pioli is just crusing? We lose Colvin, who appeared effective, kept Bruschi (who is clearly slow), waved at Kyle Brady going out the door, and lost our corners. And now we're going to lose Moss. Let's just trade the Calvin Klein kid to the Jets and be done with it. Jeezz...

  1. Why are we so bent on keeping Moss? We had the most prolific offense in the NFL last season and we couldn't score more than 14 pts in the Superbowl. By the way, where was Moss the 2nd half of the season? He was a supposed decoy, but even when he wasn't double teamed he still wasn't making any plays. We won 3 Superbowls because of our defense and special teams. We need to use the money that we would have to spend to keep Moss on defensive players. Offense wins games...defense wins Superbowls.

  1. moss had a 1 year phenom he won't repeat. he's going to cost a lot. brady uncharacteristically forced the ball to him late in the season to get him personal stats/goals which again is uncharacteristic of the patriots. we won 3 super bowls without him. He's very good but he sucked in the playoffs and he did not excel in the super bowl. If he doesn't want to play for the team let him walk.

  1. Why did they not franchise the guy. Could the mighty Partiots be bowing to a glorified superstar which means they were intimidated by Moss and his agent had they franchised him? Could be squeezed under the Colts cap? Then I would be upset. Otherwise, my faith in coach Bill and Brandy remains. If Moss departs N.E., it only means that he never changed as a person.

  1. Anyone considering how this will affect The Franchise (Tom Brady) if the "brain trust" allows Moss to leave, ala Deion Branch? Who wants to "return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear" when Reche Caldwell was out leading receiver? Moss had a record-breaking season and there's no one the Pats can get to replace that. If he leaves, it's just another gaping hole to fill on a team that was one play from winning the Super Bowl. If the lose Randy after losing Asante Samuel, they might have to scratch just to make the playoffs considering the ill will it could create between Belichick and Tom Brady, who might just leave when his contract expires because the Patriots don't want to pay to keep their best players.

Maybe trade for Chad J. ...not alot of other #1 options out there beyond him and Moss. I would sign Bryant Johnson irregardless of the Moss situation - as your new #2...if Moss leaves, BJ becomes the #1 guy, then go hard after Berrian AND Crumpler.

Defense still wins (Pats fans - we should know that). If they lose Moss AND dont use that $$ to get Briggs (or someone!) then I'll be mad.

pats should have 5 superbowls not three,, time to retool the team

  1. I see a repeat of 2006 on the horizon. Kraft's philosophy has 4 simple steps:

1 -To get a bargain when he can

2 - Don't break the bank because he needs (sorry wants) the money for his shopping wonderland

3 - Charge the fans as much as as he can get away

4 - Let Tom carry you as far as he can.

This pattern has been very clear the past three years.

Don't try to sugar coat it, its reality. Its now about the empire not about football for Bob Kraft.

  1. Wow. Trust the men who run the franchise people! We had Moss for a year under our terms. Wasn't that sweet? Next year is a whole new year and laundry ALWAYS changes. So what? I'm thinking that I'd rather find some LB and CB & S help in the 2ndary via the free agent market if the price is right. If they can't come to terms with Moss at a number that makes sense for all involved, so be it. Does anyone think the $18m signing bonus the Browns just gave Stallworth is something that the Pats should have matched? ...other than that, I'm not listening to innuendo and rumours and whining about something that hasn't happened yet. It is just wasted energy. Go Pats!

They lost Stallworth (more unfortunate than many think) and, if they lose Moss, it's almost a certainty that Brady won't resign with the Pats in two years...We can see the potential for this franchise to crumble into obscurity once again...

  1. Only so much $$$ to go around. The difference this year in my opinion with Moss was 16-0 to 13-3 if he wasn't in NE. He was double teamed alot in the playoffs but basically a nonfactor. Jerry Rice was, I'm sure in his day, double covered in the playoffs but he always got his share of receptions. Would the patriots be that far behind with Welker, Jackson, Washington and (hopefully) Gaffney? Remember that they almost went to the SB 2006 except they blew it at the end (much like this SB). Spend the big money (little they have) on FA DB's and LB's

  1. Even thought ‘defense wins’, I always thought that they would sign Moss over Asante. Mostly because I thought Moss would be inclined to take less $$$ to stay in NE, to try (again) to win a ring. Moss did all the right things – restructured, was a model citizen and helped the team break records. One would have thought that the two sides would have already had a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ at the beginning of last season – if you play nice, we’ll resign you for X dollars. However, if the rumors are true that Moss is becoming frustrated, I’m concerned that he will now look to another contender that is willing to pay market value. This would be a big loss for NE unless they somehow become the best defensive team in the league.

  1. I cant believe all these idiotic people who say they are giving up if Randy Moss leaves. Bottom line is that Moss was a total bust in the playoffs, one catch against Jacksonville, one catch against the Chargers and did nothing for most of the game against the Giants. Wes Welker is the reciever who always comes up big in key situations not Moss. The Patriots won three Super Bowls without him and with a great nucleus returning will win more without him. I loved the attitude of Kelly Washington last year as he didn't
complain about not being a regfular player and was terrific on special teams and watch Washingtom blossom into a great reciever next season!!

  1. The Pats are acting as if there is another WR out there at Mosses level. (Hello, but not even Javon Walker) can replace Moss. This thin-veiled belief just isn't the case. Moss is the premiere WR in the league and he has proven he can play with Brady. This is all that matters, period.

Anything less than a three-year deal is a hose job to the thousands of Patriots fans. Sorry, but that's true. The premiere WRs in the league (Walker, Owens, Smith) all require quality second-level WRs on the other side of the field. Moss is a true miracle man. A quality 2nd WR like, like Gaffney, if allowed to play his position would take this team back to glory.

Do not mess with this Pats Management. Sign this guy - and sign him soon. Do not screw around.

  1. I don't understand the comments regarding the Kraft's not spending money? They spend to the maximum allowed under the salary cap, set by the league. The problem is, there is only so much they can spend, and you can't spend it all on one, or a few players.....just look at the Redskins! If 50% of the cap is spent on 2 players...you have some pretty average or less players in all other positions.
Don't get me wrong, I want Moss here....but I also recognize that we can't overpay....that's the secret to how the Pats have been so good for so long in this age of the salary cap! My advice, give this some time..and whatever happens, happens...all players must give up some salary to play on a competitive team, year in and year out...if you want to have ups and downs...go and over pay...let's give our team the benefit of the doubt.....they have more information than we do, and more than the media....

I hope this isn't the case, but if so...it was good while it lasted. Too bad we ruined our chance at a perfect season. If we had finished the way we should have Moss's departure would be lot easier to swallow.

$22MM under the cap. Moss is worth at LEAST a $12MM cap hit a year given the way the cap escalates the next three years.

Unless his new team has a great QB and enough depth at WR, he will be frustrated by many more poor throws and getting roughed up with double teams. The Patriots will be better off without Moss. To rely more on the running game, to employ it as the primary threat (Maroney, Morris, Faulk and a newbie??) will be cause to help slow down pass rushes like the Giants. More play action will get Ben Watson going (better receiver than blocker) Chad Jackson, Wes Welker hopefully Jab and the offense will be JUST FINE THANK YOU !! Even Kelly Washington can be productive in a good play action offense.

Keep dropping and slinging long to Moss and we will see TB get injured,, a right shoulder injury and we can bend over and see the darkness as we kiss this great run GOOD BYE BABY!!

The've done that every year since 2000. They have a budget and if Moss can get more, I'm sure they have Chad Johnson's number on speed dial. Moss wants a long term deal, and they won't get locked into it. These players are to hot and cold to be that reliable for a 4 + year contract with big bucks. 1. Count the rings of each player:

    Owens (0)
    Harrison (1)
Holt (1) (before he was a big time receiver)
    Moss (0)

    Brady's Receivers:
    Patten (3)
    Brown (3)
    Givens (2)
    Branch (2)

The fact is that 3 quality receivers are better the one superstar. Last year was close, the Pats had 3 quality receieer at a good price tag but that price tag is not there this year. Every receiver that wanted to much went else where (see Branch & Givens). No doubt Moss is the best and T.O, is second best but count their rings. Welker plus Walker (or another qulaity receiver) and Gaffney for less money will work. Spending big money on a receiver does not win championships.

I would love to see Moss back, but if the price tag is too high then let another team blow their cap out of the water. Moss will NOT have the same year with another QB unless he teams up with Manning and Wayne. I would love to see Owens self-destuct if Moss goes to Dallas.

Afterall, he is the one most affected by Moss leaving. The problem with the PATS front office is that they spoil the relationship between team and player after all their grinding. Berrian signed a 6 yr, 42M deal with 16M guaranteed. Moss is twice the WR Berrian is. Will the Pats offer a 30M guaranteed contract? 20M signing bonus? 6yr, 70M contract? 1. Here's what's going on:

    a. BB is going to allow a lot of talent leave and he's going to replace these guys with whoever they can find. Why? Because the biggest problem Tom Brady and BB have right now is the country isn't buying the validity of the Pats last three Super Bowls due to Spygate. The number one way Tom and BB can prove themselves to the NFL community (and future Hall of Fame voters) is to go out in September and start (and finish) another SB run with just average talent (and no cameras). If Tom and BB are able to pull this off once or twice more before their run comes to an end, this will go far in proving the value of their prior SB accomplishments (throw in Teddy B. and any other vets that such as Ty Law as well). It would be good to keep Moss, but it Tom wins a SB with him, the critics nation-wide are just going to say that Tom's just average and that he wouldn't have won SB 43 (Feb 2009) without Moss. Brady and BB aren't fighting for a SB in 2009 as much as their fighting to validate the prior three.

    b. This one I'm not so sure of. However, if I was Bob Kraft, I would be scared just a bit by all these lawsuits. In light of the product name taking a big hit recently and potential legal bills coming up, it probably won't hurt being a bit more under the cap than the next team. Of course, I don't deal with his kind of numbers in my daily life so I could be way out of line on that one.

Conclusion: I hope the Pats pull it off.

  1. To wake up in the morning and hear that Brett is saying that he wants Randy Moss in Green Bay makes me sad. Personally, I don't think we need him. Our WR core are doing a good job on thier own. Why would we want to pay an over priced ego maniac? To those of you who have been writing about what Randy Moss contributed to the Pats.... Brady had 50 td and Moss had 23 of those. If Moss leaves WHY would Brady leave??? Though I can't stand the PATS...I have to say they were a good team before him. How did Brady win SB rings without Moss? I wouldn't pay him anymore than Moss is worth and it wouldn't be that much....If it means Brett plays another year then he can have whatever he wants though!!!!

  1. Brett needs Randy this year. I think the Packers can get this deal done.

  1. Favre would never base decision to return on what Moss would do. In fact - if Moss does come to Green Bay - I'm retiring from watching.
